Dying Light: The Beast is a strong fit if you want first-person parkour and hard-hitting melee combat wrapped in a tense day-and-night survival-horror loop. Its main trade-off is scope: the rural Castor Woods setting offers a narrower traversal sandbox than Dying Light 2, according to PC Gamer’s review. The free Restored Land mode adds a harsher solo option, but it is not the co-op experience for groups.
What is Dying Light: The Beast?
Techland describes Dying Light: The Beast as a standalone installment starring Kyle Crane in Castor Woods. The story follows Crane after thirteen years imprisoned by the Baron, carrying both human and zombie DNA and struggling for revenge and control over his emerging beast abilities. It launched on September 18, 2025, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. It is not listed for PS4 or Xbox One. Techland’s official game page and FAQ provide the platform and release details.

The pros
Parkour, melee combat and beast abilities work together as the central appeal
Techland highlights first-person parkour, forceful melee combat, off-road driving and beast-like combat abilities. That mix promises a specific rhythm: move through the environment, take on infected up close, and use Crane’s altered abilities when ordinary fighting is not enough. These are the game’s intended strengths, rather than independently measured claims about how satisfying each system feels. Techland’s official game page

Nightfall gives exploration a survival-horror edge
The official PlayStation description says danger intensifies after sunset, when players may need to run, hide or fight. That day-and-night contrast can appeal if you want the freedom to explore paired with pressure to make careful choices when darkness falls. PlayStation’s game page
Up to four players can share the main adventure
The base adventure supports online co-op for up to four players, with shared progression. On PS5, PlayStation says online co-op requires a PlayStation Plus membership; check the relevant platform’s current terms before playing online. Techland’s FAQ and PlayStation’s game page
Restored Land adds a distinct free survival mode
Restored Land changes the rules rather than simply extending the main campaign. In this solo-designed mode, killed infected and looted items do not respawn, resources are scarcer, and an optional One Life rule wipes the run if Crane dies. Techland says the update is free for existing owners and included in current editions. It suits players who want survival to depend more heavily on managing risk and supplies, but not groups looking for a co-op mode. Level Infinite and Techland’s Restored Land announcement

The cons and trade-offs
Castor Woods is a narrower traversal sandbox than Dying Light 2
PC Gamer’s September 18, 2025 review describes The Beast as trading Dying Light 2’s dense urban environment for rural villages and removing systems such as faction territory control, connected zipline networks, jump pads and the paraglider. The reviewer regards the result as more grounded but less expansive, and misses the broader sandbox. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict: players who want a large traversal playground may prefer Dying Light 2’s wider toolset, while those who welcome a more focused survival-horror structure may prefer the change. PC Gamer’s review
Restored Land is for solo play, not a co-op group
Although the main adventure supports up to four players, Restored Land is designed as a solo experience. If playing the new survival mode together is the main reason your group is considering the game, that distinction matters. Level Infinite and Techland’s announcement
It is limited to current-generation consoles and PC
The official platform list includes PC, PS5 and PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. It does not list PS4 or Xbox One. Techland’s official game page
