Before shipping, confirm the exact SDK patch and dependencies, decide whether the change needs a new native binary or qualifies for a compatible over-the-air (OTA) update, validate the store release state, and smoke-test the deployed Worker. Expo SDK 57 is a framework release, not a ready-made release policy: your team must set its own tests, rollout, monitoring, and rollback requirements.
1. Record and verify the release inputs
Start with a release record that lets someone reproduce what is going out and identify which installed apps it can serve. Capture:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The app commit and lockfile.
- The installed Expo SDK patch version and relevant dependency versions.
- Whether the project uses Continuous Native Generation (CNG) or maintains native projects directly.
- The EAS build profile, target platforms, app version, and runtime-version strategy.
- The Worker commit, deployment environment, and configuration or secrets expected by the app.
Expo announced SDK 57 on June 30, 2026. It upgrades React Native from 0.85 to 0.86 and keeps React 19.2. Expo describes React Native 0.86 as intended to have no breaking changes from 0.85, but advises reviewing both its release notes and Expo’s full changelog before upgrading. Check the installed patch and align dependencies rather than treating “SDK 57” as a complete version identifier. Expo SDK 57 release notes.
Check the SDK 57 patch against your dependencies
Expo says [email protected] updates React Native to 0.86.2 and resolves a Hermes V1 memory regression affecting apps that import react-native-worklets or react-native-reanimated. This is a reason to check whether those dependencies and Hermes V1 are in your app—not evidence that every SDK 57 app has the regression. Expo says [email protected] updates React Native to 0.86.3 and fixes a development startup-time regression that does not affect production apps. Verify your installed Expo patch before relying on either fix. Expo SDK 57 release notes.
#1 Best Overall
For an upgrade, use Expo’s checklist: align dependencies, run Expo Doctor, review the full changelog, and handle native projects according to how the app is generated. SDK 57 changes expo prebuild so it clears and regenerates native android and ios directories by default; --no-clean applies changes to existing folders instead. For CNG projects, regenerate the native folders. For projects that do not use CNG, run pod install and apply relevant native project changes. If you use expo-dev-client, create a new development build. Expo SDK 57 release notes.
2. Choose a binary release or an OTA update
A store binary and an OTA update are different delivery paths, not interchangeable labels for the same release. A new native build is needed when native code or configuration changes require a different installed binary. An OTA update can serve eligible JavaScript or asset changes only when the installed app’s runtime is compatible. Validate that eligibility using your project’s runtime-version configuration.
Rank #2
| Release path | Use it when | Gate checks |
|---|---|---|
| New native build and store submission | The change requires native characteristics not present in the installed binary. | Platform coverage, signing and build profile, target store track, binary validation, and store release state. |
| OTA update to installed builds | The change is eligible for OTA and the target binary has a compatible runtime. | Runtime compatibility, channel-to-environment mapping, staging parity, and promotion or rollback procedure. |
Expo’s production EAS workflow fingerprints native project characteristics and looks for a matching build. If one is not available, the workflow builds and submits; if a matching build exists, it can send an OTA update. Treat that as a useful decision model, not a substitute for checking your app’s actual runtime and configuration. Expo production deployment workflow and Expo runtime versions.

3. Gate store submission separately from store publication
EAS Submit transfers signed Android .aab or iOS .ipa binaries to store services; an upload succeeding does not mean the app is publicly released. Track the intended store state separately from the EAS job result. Expo EAS Submit.
Rank #3
Android
Confirm that the upload went to the intended Google Play track. Expo notes that submission for a new app defaults to internal testing. Store listing work and any later promotion to a broader track remain separate steps; record the target track and verify it in Play Console. Expo Android submission guide.
iOS
An uploaded build becomes available in TestFlight after Apple processes it. TestFlight availability is not an App Store production release: complete App Store Connect metadata and screenshots, select the intended build, and submit it for App Review. Confirm the review and release state independently of the upload result. Expo iOS submission guide.

4. Stage and promote OTA updates against the production runtime
Test an OTA update on a staging or beta path that uses a build with the same runtime as production. Then verify that the intended production channel maps to the correct environment and compatible runtime. Expo describes using a store beta track or internal distribution for staging. Expo OTA update deployment guide.

Republishing the verified bundle can preserve the exact tested code. Make those inputs explicit in the release record; a staging success is not meaningful if production resolves a different runtime, channel, environment, or configuration. 5. Validate the Worker in its own runtime and deployment
Do not infer Worker compatibility from a successful local Node.js run. Cloudflare Workers execute requests in V8 isolates, not full JavaScript processes, and many familiar Node.js APIs are unavailable directly; compatibility modules cover some needs. Review the dependencies used by the app-facing routes for Node-specific APIs, then test the deployed Worker or a production-equivalent deployment. Expo EAS Hosting Worker runtime reference.
The Worker gate should exercise the app’s critical API calls, authentication and configuration, error handling, and dependencies used by those routes. Confirm required bindings and secrets in the target environment. The exact compatibility flags, bindings, deployment command, and rollback steps depend on the Worker project; set and document them locally rather than assuming a universal configuration.
6. Define the project policy that vendor docs cannot supply
General Expo and Cloudflare documentation describes delivery mechanics, not your team’s acceptable release risk. Put the following decisions in the release checklist, with an owner and a recorded pass/fail result:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Which automated test suites and manual checks are required for each platform and Worker endpoint.
- Which staging evidence is required before an OTA promotion or store release.
- The rollout scope or percentage, if releases are phased, and the conditions for pausing expansion.
- The monitoring signals and observation window used to detect app or API regressions.
- Who can halt a rollout, revert an OTA update, or roll back the Worker, and how those actions are performed.
- How secrets, bindings, signing configuration, and production environment variables are validated without exposing secret values.
These are policy choices, not universal Expo or Cloudflare thresholds. A release record that names them makes the app binary, OTA path, and Worker deployment reviewable as one release without confusing their separate failure modes.
