The DwarfLab DWARF mini is a compact, phone-controlled smart telescope for people who want to try wide-field astrophotography without carrying a larger rig. It was listed for US$419 on DwarfLab’s US product page when checked in 2026, and New Atlas reported the same price in its September 27, 2026 review. It is best understood as a portable way to photograph the Moon, star clusters and nebulae—not as a telescope for detailed planetary images. DwarfLab calls it the “world’s smallest” smart telescope, but the available sources do not independently verify that market-wide claim.
What is the DWARF mini, and who is it for?
The DWARF mini combines a telescope, cameras, motorized movement, storage and battery in one phone-controlled device. DwarfLab specifies a weight of 840 g and dimensions of 100.38 × 183.61 × 60.70 mm, making portability its clearest advantage. The manufacturer lists the US price at US$419 as accessed in 2026; New Atlas’s September 27, 2026 review also reported US$419. Those are dated listings, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability. DwarfLab’s product page and New Atlas’s review provide the listing and review details.

It makes the most sense for a beginner or traveler who values a small, self-contained setup and is willing to spend time learning the app and letting images accumulate. It is a less suitable choice if the main goal is high-detail planetary photography.
DwarfLab’s “world’s smallest” wording is a manufacturer claim, not a verified ranking across every smart telescope on the market. New Atlas describes it as especially portable, but that review also does not establish a comprehensive market comparison.

What can it photograph well?
New Atlas reviewer Bronwyn Thompson describes using the DWARF mini for the Moon, nebulae, star clusters, star trails and wide-field sky scenes. The review’s strongest case is for accessible, patient imaging: the device can capture and stack images over time, so a longer session may produce a more satisfying result than a quick snapshot. This is not a promise of professional observatory-level detail; the small telephoto system has specific limits.
The telephoto camera has a 30 mm aperture, a 150 mm focal length and a 2.07 MP output, according to DwarfLab. Its additional wide-angle camera has a 3.4 mm aperture. The product page lists JPG, MP4, FITS and TIFF support. These are manufacturer specifications, not a measure of image quality in every observing condition. DwarfLab’s specifications describe the camera and file formats.

Why planets are a weak fit
DwarfLab’s user manual states plainly: “DWARF Mini is not designed or optimized for planetary imaging.” The modest resolution and 150 mm focal length help explain why this is not the right pick for close, finely detailed views of planets. Thompson likewise cautions in the New Atlas review that stacking many captures does not make its results comparable to the highly detailed images readers may associate with NASA. For the Moon and broader sky targets, the Mini’s intended use is a better match.

- BRIGHT & CLEAR: This mini telescope uses BAK4 prism lens with great light transmission. 25X magnification and 30mm objective lens with HD resolution provide you with a bright, wide and far field of vision (270ft./1000yds.).
- LIGHTWEIGHT & PORTABLE: This pocket-size monocular telescope will be your ideal travel partner, collapsible eyepiece with a very small volume and weight for easy storage, and the attached bag for convenient to carry it around with one finger.
- DURABLE & WATERPROOF: Main components of this spyglass are quality metal construction and shiny brass finish. Its waterproof design can eliminate the worry in rainy days, but don't used it in a heavy rain or soaked in water.
- WIDE APPLICATION: The compact telescope is quite suitable for watching sport events, up-close bird watching, hiking, travelling, sightseeing, etc. It helps to expand your horizons by seeing objects in distant or scene as if it were located very close to the eye.
- GREAT GIFT: The brass telescope comes with a leatherette bag, allowing you to take it anywhere, never missing any important or beautiful scenes. Perfect as a gift for kids to realize their captain's dream of exploring the world.
Setup and app experience
Thompson found initial setup and connecting the telescope to a phone easy, but learning the app’s functions took experimentation. The review also describes the in-app AI assistant as laggy and text-heavy, so do not assume every control will be self-explanatory on first use. These are the reviewer’s observations, rather than a guarantee of how every user or phone will perform.
The review notes that the Mini can continue shooting after the phone app is closed while the phone remains connected to the telescope’s own Wi-Fi. That may help when you want to leave a session running, but it depends on keeping that connection in place.

Battery, storage, movement and mounting
DwarfLab lists a built-in 7,000 mAh battery, up to four hours of battery life and 64 GB of internal storage. The four-hour figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently verified runtime. Thompson reported that a roughly two-hour session ended with about 70% charge remaining; approximately 30 minutes of that session involved downtime, so it is one anecdotal use report, not a controlled battery test.

The product specifications list 360° base rotation, 225° of tilt movement and a standard 1/4-inch mounting thread. New Atlas says a tripod is not included. You can use a compatible tripod, but check that its fitting matches and that it is stable enough for the intended setup before buying one.

Solar imaging and what comes in the box
DwarfLab lists one DWARF mini, one ND filter, one USB-C cable and one wipe cloth as box contents. The included ND filter is for solar use: attach it before imaging the Sun, as instructed in the official manual. Do not point the telescope at the Sun without the required filter attached.

Is it worth considering?
Consider the DWARF mini if portability matters more than maximum optical detail and you want an approachable route into wide-field sky imaging. Its small size, internal storage and stacking-oriented use are attractive for patient sessions, while the app’s learning curve means “smart” does not necessarily mean effortless.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf planetary detail is your priority, the Mini is not the right tool: DwarfLab itself says it is not designed or optimized for planetary imaging. The manufacturer compares it with its larger DWARF 3 and positions the Mini as more portable and beginner-oriented, while the DWARF 3 has a larger telephoto sensor and higher telephoto resolution. That is DwarfLab’s specification and positioning comparison, not an independent head-to-head test. See DwarfLab’s product comparison.
