Marker bytes tell a compatible DAC that the frames contain DSD data, so the DAC can recover it. DoP uses PCM framing; it does not, by itself, convert DSD into ordinary PCM audio samples.
What DSD over PCM means
DoP stands for “DSD Audio over PCM Frames.” The DoP standard, Version 1.1, describes a method for transferring DSD audio in PCM frames, primarily over USB and also over other PCM-based links. The frames provide a transport format; the audio payload remains DSD until a compatible DAC recognizes and decodes it. DoP open Standard, Version 1.1

What a DoP frame carries
In the Japan Audio Society’s example for 2.8 MHz DSD, the carrier is 24-bit/176.4 kHz PCM. Sixteen bits in each frame carry DSD data, and the other eight carry markers identifying the frame as DoP. Japan Audio Society DoP glossary
For the ESS ES9038Q2M, the datasheet specifies alternating marker values of 0x05 and 0xFA. It states that DoP requires 24-bit or 32-bit PCM mode and is not supported in 16-bit mode. How DoP differs from native DSD and PCM conversion

What you need to play DoP
- Playback software that can emit DoP. The output mode may need to be selected explicitly. Music Player Daemon notes that it cannot determine whether a connected DAC supports DoP, so DoP must be enabled by the user.
- A suitable, unaltered audio path. The intervening software, operating-system driver, and connection must preserve the required PCM frame width and data. Music Player Daemon specifies bit-perfect 24-bit PCM support in the sound path.
- A DAC that explicitly supports DoP. Accepting ordinary PCM alone does not establish DoP compatibility. Check the DAC manual for DoP support and the DSD rates it accepts.
These requirements are why a DoP stream can fail even when the computer and DAC are connected: a setting or part of the audio path may alter the frames, or the DAC may not recognize DoP. Music Player Daemon DSD playback documentation

Why the maximum DoP rate varies
The usable rate is determined by the whole playback chain, not by the word “DoP” alone. Check the source file rate, the player’s DoP capabilities, the driver and transport, and the DAC’s supported DoP rates. Software can also apply its own fallback behavior: Audirvāna documents lowering a DSD256 source to DSD128 or DSD64 for DoP playback on a compatible DAC, using the corresponding DoP carrier rate. That is documented behavior for Audirvāna, not a universal rule for all players. Audirvāna support: DSD playback
Does DoP sound better than native DSD?
DoP defines transport, not sound quality. The format and implementation documents establish how DSD is carried, but do not establish that DoP sounds better or worse than native DSD or DSD converted to PCM.
