Dry brushing can remove some surface flakes and leave body skin temporarily smoother-feeling, but it is an optional form of mechanical exfoliation—not a necessary daily skincare step. The reviewed expert guidance does not support claims that it detoxifies the body or reduces cellulite. Whether to try it depends largely on your skin’s sensitivity and whether you find the ritual worthwhile.
What dry brushing does—and what it does not
Dry brushing means brushing dry skin with a tool. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) classifies brushes as mechanical exfoliation: a physical method for removing dead skin cells. Its plausible effect is modest and surface-level: it may lift some flakes and make skin feel smoother for a while. That is not evidence of a lasting transformation or a health benefit.

Claims about cellulite and detoxification deserve particular caution. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, says: “There is no proof dry brushing your skin reduces cellulite or the appearance of cellulite — this claim isn’t supported by any scientific evidence.” The reviewed dermatology guidance likewise does not establish dry brushing as a way to detoxify the body.

There is no evidence-based requirement to dry brush every day. The AAD says exfoliation frequency should depend on skin type and the method; more aggressive exfoliation should be done less often. A Cleveland Clinic article describes a daily technique, but a description of how someone might brush is not proof that daily brushing is needed or suitable for everyone.

Who should avoid it or choose a gentler option?
Mechanical exfoliation can irritate skin, particularly when the method is too harsh or the skin is already vulnerable. The AAD says people with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin may find it too irritating and may prefer a washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliator instead.

If you decide to try it
Cleveland Clinic offers practical technique suggestions, not a clinically validated protocol or universal prescription. The AAD’s broader advice is to use a light touch and moisturize after exfoliating.

- If following Cleveland Clinic’s suggested pattern, start at the feet or ankles; use long, fluid strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the torso and back.
- Use even lighter pressure on sensitive areas, and do not continue if your skin becomes irritated or bleeds.
- Shower afterward if you want to rinse away loosened flakes, then apply moisturizer.
How it compares with other exfoliation choices
| Option | Method | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Dry brushing | Mechanical: a brush physically exfoliates the skin. | May suit someone who enjoys the ritual and tolerates brushing; dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin may find it irritating. No reviewed source establishes it as superior to another method. |
| Washcloth | Physical exfoliation using a gentler tool, depending on how it is used. | The AAD identifies it as a possible gentler choice for people whose skin is easily irritated. |
| Mild chemical exfoliator | Uses an exfoliating ingredient rather than a brush to loosen dead skin cells. | The AAD says people with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin may prefer a mild option; suitability still depends on the person and product. |
Choose based on your skin type, sensitivity, existing products, and preference—not on an assumption that one method delivers better results. The guidance reviewed here does not show dry brushing outperforming other exfoliation methods.

What the expert guidance can—and cannot—establish
The AAD’s guidance, last updated February 6, 2026, addresses safe exfoliation generally, including brushes, skin-type considerations, frequency, and moisturizing: How to safely exfoliate at home. Cleveland Clinic’s November 2, 2021 article discusses dry-brushing technique and cellulite claims: The Truth About Dry Brushing and What It Does for You.
TIME’s March 25, 2015 article quotes dermatologist Tina Alster, MD: “I know dry brushing is popular, but the actual benefits are unclear.” Its quoted frequency advice dates from 2015 and should not replace the AAD’s current guidance that frequency depends on skin type and method: You Asked: Should I Dry Brush My Skin?
