What changed in IRCC’s processing-times tool?
In material dated May 28, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) described an improved tool that gives most applicants a better estimate based on their application date. It also provides the number of applications in the relevant inventory and an approximate count of people ahead in the queue. The live IRCC processing-times tool explains that some estimates are based on the month and year an applicant applied, while a processing time for a new application estimates how long IRCC expects an application received today to take.

Neither kind of estimate is a guaranteed completion date for an individual case. Actual timing can vary with the application type and completeness, the work already in IRCC’s inventory, how easily information can be verified, how quickly an applicant answers requests, and other case-specific factors. An incomplete application may be delayed or returned, and a complex application may take longer.
How are the estimates calculated?
IRCC uses two different approaches. They answer related but distinct questions, so a historical percentile should not be read as interchangeable with a forward-looking range.

IRCC may not provide a country-specific historical time when there are too few applications from that country to calculate one. The department says those applications are still processed. What do the published work-permit extension figures mean?
IRCC’s data as of February 28, 2026 showed historical work-permit extension processing times of 129 days at the 50th percentile and 258 days at the 80th percentile. Separately, the department’s forward-looking estimate dated February 1, 2026 was 100–120 days for most new work-permit-extension clients.

These are dated snapshots, not the live estimate readers will necessarily see now and not an individual prediction. The historical figures describe completed applications over a past period; the forward-looking range is a projection for most new clients. Check the current IRCC tool for the estimate relevant to your application.
Does being Indian change the estimate for an extension filed in Canada?
The official sources cited here describe in-Canada extension estimates by application type and calculation method; they do not say that Indian citizenship by itself changes the estimate for a work-permit extension submitted from inside Canada. Do not assume that a separate country-specific historical figure applies to your case, or that the absence of one signals a delay. Use the extension category and application details that match your situation in IRCC’s tool.

Can you keep working while IRCC processes an extension?
IRCC advises applying at least 30 calendar days before the current work permit expires. Its extension application guidance states: “If you apply to extend or change the conditions of your work permit before it expires, you’re legally allowed to stay in Canada while we process your application.” To benefit from maintained status and continued work authorization, you must meet the applicable eligibility and timing rules, including that IRCC receives the application before expiry.
Eligible applicants may continue working under the same conditions as their current permit while waiting. An employer-specific permit generally keeps the worker tied to the same employer, job and work location; an open work permit generally allows a change of employer and job. If you plan to travel or need to change your work conditions, check the official guidance before acting.

How to use the estimate for planning
- Open IRCC’s processing-times tool and select the work-permit extension option that matches your application.
- Check whether the result is based on when you applied or describes an application received today. Note any inventory or queue context shown.
- Use the displayed time as a planning estimate, not as a date to book travel, resign, or make another decision that requires a guaranteed outcome.
- Apply at least 30 calendar days before your current permit expires and verify the maintained-status and work-authorization rules that apply to you.
- Check the live tool again when making time-sensitive plans, because estimates and inventories can change.
