In a 2022 aerosol-chemistry study, sub-micrometre droplets formed a localized region of stronger light, where a measured photochemical reaction proceeded faster. Across the whole droplet, the reported acceleration was smaller: about two to three times, with local hot-spot rates reaching up to ten times the rate without the optical resonance effect. The result applies to the droplets and conditions studied, not to every reaction in every droplet.
How can a droplet focus light?
A droplet does not need a solid lens to redistribute light. In the mechanism described by physical chemist Ruth Signorell’s ETH Zurich group, the droplet’s optical properties structure the incoming electromagnetic field through resonance. Modeling predicted a region of especially intense light toward the particle’s rear: an optical hot spot.

Reactant molecules can encounter that region as the droplet rotates and as molecules diffuse through its liquid interior. Molecules exposed to stronger light can react more quickly, raising the local photochemical rate compared with a more uniform light field. The size of the effect depends on the droplet and illumination; it is not a general multiplier for all droplet chemistry.

What did the experiment measure?
Researchers studied sub-micrometre droplets containing iron(III) citrate under ultraviolet illumination. They tracked the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), using X-ray microscopy and spectroscopy to map the Fe(III) signal within droplets. The reduction was faster in the region predicted to be the optical hot spot than elsewhere in the particle.

The distinction between local and whole-particle rates matters. The Paul Scherrer Institute reports that reactions in the hot spot were up to ten times faster than without the resonance effect, while averaging across the particle produced an acceleration factor of two to three. These are study-specific results, not interchangeable descriptions of a single uniform rate.
When is the optical effect most pronounced?
The reported mechanism is most pronounced when the light wavelength and particle size are in a similar range. Chemistry World identifies near-ultraviolet wavelengths of 300–450 nm as important for the relevant photochemistry and describes the strongest effect for sub-micrometre particles. Those conditions characterize the reported aerosol work; they should not be treated as universal thresholds for every droplet or chemical reaction.

Could this change atmospheric-chemistry models?
Possibly, but the study does not quantify a global atmospheric effect. Aerosol particles undergo chemistry that can differ from gas-phase reactions, and photolysis within particles is one area where models may leave uncertainty. Chemistry World reports atmospheric scientist Alma Hodzic’s concern that gas-phase treatment of organic aerosol photolysis did not fully explain some observations. A light-intensity hot spot inside droplets could therefore be relevant to how particle-phase photochemistry is represented in models, with potential implications for air-quality and climate predictions.

How does this differ from later microdroplet results?
Later work on sprayed aqueous microdroplets concerns different reaction systems and conditions. A 2024 Chemical Science perspective by Xiaowei Song and Richard N. Zare discusses that separate field, including an experiment with droplets averaging about 10 μm that reported a reaction more than 10⁴ times faster under its stated comparison. That figure is not the enhancement measured in the 2022 sub-micrometre aerosol study, and it does not establish the same optical-resonance mechanism.
Earlier ETH Zurich work in 2016 also described aerosol droplets acting as focusing lenses and accelerating photochemistry by up to an order of magnitude. It provides historical context rather than an additional measurement from the 2022 experiment.

What might the finding be useful for?
Improving models of particle-phase atmospheric photochemistry is a plausible application, though its overall effect remains unquantified. Chemistry World also reports photochemical synthesis as a possibility raised by a researcher. The droplet study did not demonstrate an industrial process, so synthesis should be understood as a prospective direction rather than an established use.
