It is free and open source, but it is not cloud storage: you need a receiving computer or server with enough space, and you need a separate recovery plan if you want protection from accidental deletion, device failure, or other data loss. It also does not provide the full Android backup and restore service Google documents.
Can Syncthing replace Google One?
For a folder-to-folder file-copying workflow, possibly. For a complete replacement of Google One, not by itself. The two services do different jobs: Syncthing continuously synchronizes selected folders among devices you connect, while Google’s Android backup can upload certain phone data to an account and restore it during setup on a compatible Android device.

Syncthing describes itself as a continuous file synchronization program. Its project site explains that devices can sync with a server for backup, and its FAQ says data is exchanged across your machines when they are online at the same time. There is no central Syncthing cloud account holding your files. Syncthing project site · Syncthing FAQ

| Question | Syncthing | Google Android backup / Google Account |
|---|---|---|
| Where are copies stored? | On participating devices and storage you provide; there is no central Syncthing cloud storage. | Android backup data is uploaded to Google. Google says some data is additionally encrypted with the device screen lock; photos and videos in Google Photos and carrier MMS media do not receive that screen-lock encryption. |
| How do copies move? | Connected devices exchange changes when they are online together. | Backup is associated with a Google Account and can be restored during setup on a compatible Android phone. |
| What must you provide? | Devices, disk capacity, configuration, monitoring, and a recovery strategy. | A Google Account and available account storage; the support page currently states 15 GB at no charge, with more storage available through Google One. |
| What happens to changes and deletions? | Changes can propagate to other devices. Optional file versioning can retain certain received changes, but is off by default and has limits. | Google documents backup and restore, but coverage varies by app and restoration workflow; it does not establish that every file or app state will be restored. |
Google One can also be used for storage across Google services, so replacing a phone backup workflow does not necessarily replace everything a subscription was being used for. The right comparison is control over file location versus the setup, availability, and recovery work you take on.
Is Syncthing a backup or just sync?
Its primary function is synchronization. When a file changes on one participating device, Syncthing scans for and propagates that change. That is useful for keeping working copies aligned, but it can also carry unwanted changes—including deletions—to other devices. A synchronized second copy is not automatically an independent backup.

Syncthing’s documentation describes file versioning options, including trash-can, simple, staggered, and external-command strategies. Versioning is disabled by default, must be configured for each folder and device, and uses storage on the device retaining the versions. Its documented protection concerns changes received from other devices; it does not preserve a local edit made on the archiving device itself. Syncthing file versioning documentation

For important data, plan for a recovery copy that is not merely another live synchronized folder—for example, a separate backup or snapshot strategy. An external drive attached to a receiving computer or server can add local capacity, but synchronizing to that drive alone does not guarantee independent recovery.

How do I automatically back up files from my phone to my computer?
At a high level, the phone and computer must both participate in Syncthing, the chosen folders must be configured to synchronize, and the computer must be available to receive data. The project establishes desktop-to-server use, but the sources cited here do not establish a particular Android installation path, phone-folder selection, client behavior, or battery-setting procedure. Check the current instructions for the specific client and device before relying on a phone folder being included.
- Choose the receiving device and storage. Use a computer or server you control with enough free disk space for the files and any retained versions. Decide how you will make a separate recovery copy.
- Set up Syncthing on both devices. Connect the phone and receiving device using the current instructions for their respective platforms. Syncthing uses device authentication and TLS-protected communication, according to its project site.
- Select the folders deliberately. Configure the phone folder you intend to sync and the corresponding destination on the receiving device. Do not assume every phone file, app database, or system setting is included.
- Keep the receiver available. Devices exchange data when they are online together. If the computer or server is off or disconnected, it cannot receive changes then; the copies can synchronize when the devices are available together later.
- Verify recovery, not just transfer. Check that expected files arrive, configure versioning if appropriate, and test how you would retrieve a file. A successful sync alone does not prove that an independent backup exists.
Syncthing detects filesystem changes and also periodically rescans folders. Its documentation notes that watcher-detected changes may take time to appear on another device, so do not treat the absence of an immediate update as proof of a permanent failure. Syncthing synchronization documentation

What happens if I delete a file in Syncthing?
A deletion is a change, so it can propagate to the other synchronized devices. If you need protection against that, configure file versioning for the relevant folder and device before relying on it. The default is no file versioning. Versioning behavior depends on the selected strategy, consumes storage where versions are kept, and does not cover every kind of local change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSyncthing can also create a conflict-named copy when devices make incompatible edits to the same file. The conflict copy is treated as an ordinary file and can sync onward to other devices. Review such copies before removing either version; they may contain edits that are not present in the other copy. Syncthing’s explanation of synchronization and conflicts
Can Syncthing work without cloud storage?
Yes. Syncthing does not require a central cloud account to store your files; it exchanges data between the devices you connect. That gives you control over where synchronized copies reside, but also makes availability and storage your responsibility. A computer that is unavailable cannot exchange files at that time, and you must maintain enough local capacity and a recovery approach yourself.
Quick Recap
What to check before cancelling a subscription
- List what the Google One subscription is currently supporting, including storage used across Google services, not just Android phone backup.
- Identify which files Syncthing will sync and which data—such as device settings, messages, or app-specific data—needs a different backup or restore method.
- Confirm that the receiving computer or server has enough space and will be available often enough for your needs.
- Configure and understand file versioning, if you need a way to recover certain changes or deletions, and keep a separate recovery copy for important data.
- Check Google’s current account storage and backup guidance before making a change; the 15 GB no-charge amount is what its support page currently states, not a publication date or guarantee about every account circumstance.
