Driftnet is a web app designed to capture text, links, ideas, reminders, and spoken notes in one place, then classify them and connect them to useful context or a next step. That is its maker’s intended workflow—not a proven productivity result. If you save things and later wonder, “No context, no plan, no next step,” Driftnet’s approach is worth understanding, with important limits around independent verification, privacy details, and current availability.
What Driftnet is meant to do
Driftnet is presented as a single capture point for material you want to keep: typed or pasted text, links, ideas, reminders, and spoken notes. Its maker’s design statement is “The idea is catch, structure, act.” Rather than treating each saved item as a note to revisit later, the app is intended to interpret a capture and file it as an idea, resource, task, or part of a structured workspace.

The project write-up frames the problem this way: “Saved doesn’t mean organised. Organised doesn’t mean actionable.” It also argues that “Information doesn’t disappear because you forgot it — it disappears because filing it away took more effort than it was worth.” Those are the maker’s rationale and claims, not findings from a research study.

Capture first
You enter or paste text, save a link, or dictate a spoken note. The maker says an account lets a user access captures across a laptop and phone. The current availability and behavior of the linked demo are not independently established.

- Start with a guided format: Includes how-to-use guidance and space to capture ideas between meetings. One physical planner; card decks sold separately.
Classify and add context
According to the maker, a Mastra agent classifies and extracts the capture using templates and information about existing workspaces. A capture might remain a loose idea or be filed as a resource or task; material related to a larger project can become a structured workspace item.
Turn related captures into a project
The project write-up gives a hackathon announcement as an example: it can become a workspace with a name, a deadline converted to UTC, technologies mentioned, and starter tasks. A related follow-up can be joined to an existing workspace. This example describes the intended workflow; it does not establish how consistently the app handles real-world inputs.

Where it differs from a conventional notes app
The distinction is not simply that Driftnet stores notes. Its proposed value is the step after saving: organize a capture, preserve its context, and help connect it to work already underway. A conventional notes app may be the better fit if you primarily want a searchable place to keep information and prefer to decide for yourself how it is categorized and acted on.
When evaluating Driftnet or any similar tool, consider these practical questions:

- Capture friction: How quickly can you save a thought or link when you are busy?
- Context: Does the saved item retain the original text and enough surrounding detail to make it useful later?
- Organization: Can you inspect or change the classification instead of relying entirely on automation?
- Project connections: Can a follow-up be attached to an existing workspace without losing its original meaning?
- Voice input: Is dictation available, and what service or browser feature processes it?
- Device access and data handling: Can you use the app where you need it, and are its storage, retention, and privacy practices clear?
The maker’s account does not include a comparative evaluation against named notes apps, so there is no basis to claim Driftnet performs better on these dimensions.
What the maker says is under the hood
The project write-up names Mastra for the agent workflow, Gemma 4 as the reasoning model, ElevenLabs Scribe for voice transcription, Postgres for per-user rows, and Render for hosting. It says browser speech recognition is used as a voice fallback when an ElevenLabs key is unavailable. The author also says that if a model call fails, the capture is retained as a loose idea.

These are implementation details reported by the maker, not an independent technical audit. The author reports that a first capture took 84 seconds during development, then took 2 to 6 seconds after setting the model’s thinking level to minimal. Those figures are development observations from 2026, not independently measured benchmarks or a guarantee of typical response time.
Privacy, pricing, and what remains unverified
The maker describes account separation and open model weights, and says the model pipeline could be pointed at a machine they control. The same write-up says the current app calls Gemma through Google’s API. That means the possibility of running a pipeline on a machine controlled by the maker should not be read as proof that hosted use keeps your data off third-party servers.

The project write-up does not provide a complete privacy policy, data-retention terms, an independent security review, or independently verified operational status. It also does not establish current pricing. The maker’s statement that they had not paid for any captures at the time of writing is a personal, time-bound account—not confirmation that the app is currently free.
What the early feedback can—and cannot—show
The maker reports that a friend named Samuel reacted, “One thing I can say is that this is crazy. Love it bro, it does just what you said it does.” The write-up says this informal feedback led to a change so inbox and workspace entries open to detail views. It is an anecdote from one friend, not a usability study or evidence of broad user satisfaction.
Who should consider it
Driftnet’s idea may appeal if you routinely save links and fragments of information but struggle to reconnect them to a project or decide what to do next. It is less compelling if you want a simple archive, require documented retention and security practices before storing sensitive material, or need established evidence of reliability before adopting a workflow tool.
