DRAM is fast, temporary working memory for data a device is actively using; NAND flash is nonvolatile memory that keeps data when power is off and forms the storage inside products such as SSDs, SD cards and USB drives. An SSD is not DRAM: it is a storage device that mainly uses NAND, though some SSDs also include a small DRAM cache.
DRAM vs. NAND flash at a glance
| Comparison | DRAM | NAND flash |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Working memory for active computation | Persistent data storage |
| Keeps data without power? | No. It is volatile and requires power and periodic refresh. | Yes. It is nonvolatile and retains data when power is off. |
| Common examples | DDR memory in PCs and servers, LPDDR in mobile devices, GDDR in graphics cards, and HBM in AI accelerators and high-performance computing | NAND-based SSDs, eMMC/UFS storage, SD and microSD cards, and USB flash drives |
| What to compare within the category | Generation, speed, capacity, latency, power and platform support | Capacity, interface, bits per cell, workload, and endurance and performance specifications |
| Price caveat | Market conditions vary by segment and product mix. | NAND chip, managed storage product, SSD and contract or retail prices are different measures. |
What DRAM does
DRAM—dynamic random-access memory—holds information that a processor or other component is using now. For example, a computer loads programs and working data into DRAM so they can be accessed as computation proceeds. It is not a substitute for a drive that keeps files between sessions.

Samsung describes a DRAM cell as one transistor and one capacitor: the capacitor’s charge state represents a binary value, and the transistor controls reading and writing. Because charge leaks away, DRAM must be periodically refreshed while powered. That volatility is why unsaved working data in ordinary DRAM does not persist after power is lost. Samsung’s technical overview describes the cell design and DRAM families at Samsung Semiconductor’s DRAM page.
DRAM families serve different devices
- DDR: commonly used as main memory in PCs and servers.
- LPDDR: designed for mobile-device memory needs.
- GDDR: used in graphics cards.
- HBM: used in AI accelerators and high-performance computing.
These are DRAM families, not interchangeable product labels. When comparing memory for an upgrade, check the platform’s supported generation and form factor as well as capacity and speed.

What NAND flash does
NAND flash is nonvolatile memory: it retains stored data without power. It is used in SSDs and in removable or embedded storage, including SD and microSD cards, USB flash drives, tablets, and eMMC/UFS products. Micron’s overview discusses NAND applications and the differences among cell types at Micron’s NAND guidance.
NAND is the memory technology; an SSD is a storage device built around NAND and other components. Some SSDs also use a small DRAM cache for management tasks, but that does not make the SSD itself DRAM. As Samsung puts it, “An SSD is neither SRAM nor DRAM”; it is a storage device that mainly uses nonvolatile NAND flash to retain data when power is off (Samsung Semiconductor).

NAND products can include different levels of management
Managed NAND packages combine flash with a controller and firmware functions. Raw NAND leaves more of that work to the host system, including error correction and flash-translation management. This is one reason a bare NAND chip, a finished storage device and an SSD are not equivalent items when comparing specifications or prices.

Bits per cell trade density against specifications
NAND cell labels indicate how many bits are stored in each cell. More bits per cell can increase storage density, but a cell label alone does not guarantee a particular device’s speed or endurance; implementation and product specifications matter.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why DRAM and NAND prices move
Memory prices depend on supply and demand, but also on which products manufacturers choose to make, inventory and purchasing behavior, investment, and how quickly new or upgraded factories can produce saleable memory. A capacity announcement does not necessarily mean more supply is available immediately: equipment, cleanroom capacity, process transitions and product mix affect timing.

In a 13 November 2025 outlook, TrendForce said supplier investment was shifting toward process upgrades and higher-value products such as HBM, while cleanroom constraints limited near-term capacity additions. It estimated 2026 industry capital expenditure at $61.3 billion for DRAM and $22.2 billion for NAND Flash. Those are estimates published in 2025, not settled 2026 results (TrendForce’s capital-expenditure outlook).

In a forecast published on 30 September 2026, TrendForce projected that conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in Q4 2026, and NAND Flash contract prices would rise 15–20% quarter over quarter. These are forecasts for memory contract prices, not guaranteed increases in the checkout price of a consumer RAM kit, SSD or other finished product (TrendForce’s Q4 2026 outlook).

The same report described different pressures across segments. It linked tight DRAM conditions partly to advanced process capacity allocated to server products and strong server/RDIMM demand, while noting pressure in PC and mobile demand and divergent conditions across graphics, client SSD and enterprise SSD markets. For NAND, it described AI infrastructure demand as supporting enterprise SSDs while client SSD and wafer purchasing faced different constraints. Prices therefore do not necessarily move alike across all memory products, even within one quarter.
Quick Recap
How to apply the distinction when choosing or upgrading
- If you need more active working memory, you are looking at a DRAM product such as a DDR module or kit. Verify the generation, form factor, capacity and compatibility with your device; there is no universally compatible module.
- If you need persistent storage, you are looking at an SSD or another NAND-based storage product. Compare capacity, interface, workload fit, and the product’s stated endurance and performance specifications.
- If you are comparing prices, make sure you are comparing like with like: a memory-chip contract forecast does not directly state what a specific retail RAM kit or SSD will cost.
