Dragon’s Dogma 2 can run slower in busy towns because the game puts substantial work on the CPU to process NPC behavior and character physics. When that CPU work becomes the bottleneck, the graphics card may be left waiting, so lowering resolution can have little effect. The slowdown is scene-dependent, however: 2024 testing found CPU limits in city scenes and more GPU limits in wilderness scenes, and those results should not be treated as measurements of the game after its reported September 2026 update.
Why does Dragon’s Dogma 2 run worse in towns?
Each character contributes processing work. In an October 18, 2024 report, Automaton West quoted the development team, drawing on an interview with Famitsu: “CPU power is allocated to process the thoughts of each NPC as well as the effect on character physics.” The team said that scenes with many characters, such as towns, could push CPU load high enough to affect frame rate. Automaton West’s report also quoted the team saying that GPU-focused changes such as lowering resolution had little effect when the CPU was the bottleneck.

Capcom gave a similar explanation at launch. A representative told IGN, as quoted by PC Gamer on March 21, 2024, that CPU usage is allocated to each character and dynamically calculates the effects of their physical presence in different environments; numerous characters appearing at once can make CPU usage very high and affect frame rate. Why can lowering resolution fail to fix town frame drops?
Resolution primarily changes the amount of work the GPU must do to draw the image. If the CPU is already limiting how quickly the game can prepare each frame, reducing GPU work does not remove the CPU’s NPC and physics workload. The result may be little or no frame-rate improvement in a crowded area. That response is consistent with a CPU bottleneck, but it does not by itself prove that a specific processor upgrade would solve the issue.

Graphics settings are not irrelevant everywhere. A scene can become GPU-limited instead, in which case resolution or other GPU-heavy settings may matter more. The useful question is not whether Dragon’s Dogma 2 is always “CPU-bound,” but which component limits performance in the particular scene and version being played.
What do the benchmarks show about towns versus open areas?
GamersNexus’ April 1, 2024 investigation found lower average frame rates in its Vernworth passes than in its wilderness passes, and described the city test as CPU-limited while wilderness testing leaned more on the GPU. These were controlled results on the publication’s specific hardware and test conditions, not a prediction for every PC.

How to check whether your slowdown is CPU- or GPU-limited
- Choose repeatable scenes. Compare a town location where you notice drops with a nearby or familiar open area. Keep the route and gameplay conditions as similar as practical.
- Record what you are testing. Note the game version, platform, resolution, graphics settings, frame rate, and whether frame times feel steady or uneven. Without those details, comparisons across sessions or online benchmarks can be misleading.
- Change one GPU-heavy setting at a time. Try lowering resolution or a graphics detail, then repeat the same scene. If performance barely changes in town but responds more in open areas, that pattern is consistent with the location-dependent bottlenecks seen in 2024 testing.
- Check the game version before relying on old numbers. Patch changes can alter performance behavior and system requirements. Treat pre-update benchmark results as historical unless the test matches your current version and conditions.
A small response to lower resolution is a clue, not a diagnosis: it does not establish that your CPU is defective, that a particular upgrade is necessary, or that the same bottleneck applies in every location.

How does the September 2026 update affect performance claims?
Windows Central reported that Capcom released Title Update 3.2 on September 2, 2026, changed the PC minimum and recommended specifications, and listed higher console frame-rate ceilings with FSR. Its report gives maximums of 60 fps on Xbox Series X and 45 fps on Xbox Series S with FSR. These are secondary-reported update details; the linked official notes and independent post-update measurements were not available to verify those figures here. Accordingly, 2024 PC averages explain how scene density can affect performance, but they do not establish current post-update results or current PC requirements. No population-wide statistic or confirmed hardware prescription follows from those older tests.
