The best alternative depends on what you want to improve over the Sony WH-1000XM5: price, battery life, comfort, or integration with Apple devices. For a lower-cost option, Tom’s Guide names the JLab JBuds Lux ANC its under-$100 pick; for premium cancellation, it recommends the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is the battery-focused choice, while AirPods Max 2 make the most sense for shoppers invested in Apple’s ecosystem. These are different strengths, not interchangeable claims that one model wins every category.
Quick comparison: which XM5 alternative fits you?
| Headphones | Best fit | Battery with ANC on | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|

| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Premium cancellation and comfort | Up to 30 hours; up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio, according to Bose | Tom’s Guide selects it as its overall noise-cancelling pick; that is an editorial recommendation, not a universal ranking. Bose product page |

Battery figures are not directly equivalent: manufacturer ratings and independent test results use different methods, and actual endurance varies with volume, codec, and listening mode. The MOMENTUM 4 test result below is specifically SoundGuys’ test, not a general guarantee.

Best lower-budget pick: JLab JBuds Lux ANC
If the XM5’s price is the main obstacle, the JLab JBuds Lux ANC offers a lower-cost route to over-ear noise cancellation. Tom’s Guide listed it at $79 in its 2026 review and named it an under-$100 pick. Treat that price as the review’s snapshot; check the live listing before buying.
Tom’s Guide reports 40 hours of rated battery life with ANC on and 70 hours with ANC off. The same guide praises its comfort and sound for the price, and says the ANC can reduce environmental noise on buses, trains, and in offices. That makes it a budget alternative for everyday listening, not evidence that its cancellation matches a premium model in every situation.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
The trade-offs matter if you travel or care about features: Tom’s Guide notes that the headphones do not include a carrying case and lack wear detection and LDAC support. Decide whether the lower price outweighs those omissions for your routine.
Best premium ANC alternative: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
For shoppers prioritizing cancellation and comfort over a lower purchase price, Tom’s Guide names the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) its current overall noise-cancelling pick. That ranking reflects the publication’s assessment, not an objective result that applies to every listener. Tom’s Guide also flags price and touch-control concerns.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Bose rates battery life at up to 30 hours, or up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio, and lists USB-C charging. The shorter figure is tied to Immersive Audio; compare the mode you expect to use rather than treating the maximum as a constant runtime.
Best for long battery life: Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless
The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is the clearest choice here when fewer charging breaks matter most. Sennheiser rates playback at up to 60 hours with adaptive ANC on and says a 10-minute charge can provide up to six hours of listening. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent test guarantees.
Rank #3

SoundGuys measured 56 hours and 21 minutes with ANC on while playing music peaking at 75 dB SPL. That is a specific laboratory-style test result, not a promise of the same runtime at every volume, codec, or setting. In its 2022 comparison with the XM5, SoundGuys found Sony’s cancellation stronger, especially below 100 Hz, while MOMENTUM 4 scored higher in its sound evaluation. Choose it for endurance and its sound assessment, not as the stronger ANC performer in that comparison.

Apple lists AirPods Max battery life at up to 20 hours on one charge with ANC enabled. SoundGuys highlights their Apple software integration as a reason they suit Apple-device users particularly well. That is a matter of convenience and ecosystem fit, not a claim that the headphones cannot be used with Android devices.
Rank #4
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
If you switch between Apple products, weigh that integration against the other models’ battery figures and your own comfort and ANC priorities. The available comparison supports the ecosystem consideration, but does not establish a universal winner for sound, comfort, or cancellation across every device and listener.

Should you buy the newer Sony WH-1000XM6 instead?
If you like Sony’s approach but are shopping beyond the XM5, the WH-1000XM6 is the newer generation and is identified by Tom’s Guide as a leading ANC model. It gives you a same-brand point of comparison: weigh the XM6’s current price and features against a discounted XM5 before deciding that a different brand is necessary. The cited roundup does not establish a current price comparison, so check both listings and product details at the time you shop.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right alternative
- Set a budget first. The JLab review’s $79 listing shows the lower-cost tier, but it is a dated snapshot, not a promise of today’s price.
- Decide what “better” means for you. Prioritize ANC, long-session comfort, sound signature, or battery rather than assuming all alternatives improve on the XM5 in the same way.
- Compare battery figures on equal terms. Look for whether ANC is on, which audio mode is used, and whether a number is a manufacturer rating or a publication’s test result.
- Check ecosystem and portability. Apple integration can be useful if you use Apple devices; the JLab’s lack of an included case may matter for travel.
- Verify current prices and model listings. Prices and rankings can change, and the cited review prices are snapshots.
