Short answer: Capcom has described Hard Mode as a challenge for seasoned players near the level cap, but the available official information does not establish its exact difficulty changes, special rewards, or full carryover and switching rules. The official manual does say a new adventure can retain your current level and equipment; that general feature does not confirm every detail of starting a Hard Mode run.
How Hard Mode differs from Normal Mode
Difficulty
Capcom’s announcement framed Hard Mode as a challenge for seasoned players whose characters are near or at the level cap. That describes the intended audience, not the mode’s precise settings. The available information does not specify enemy health or damage, stamina costs, encounter frequency, or other changes. Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 Steam announcements provide the announcement context, but not a complete rule list.

Rewards
No available official source establishes Hard Mode-exclusive rewards or a Normal-versus-Hard comparison for experience, currency, equipment, trophies, or drops. Treat claims about extra rewards as unconfirmed unless the current game or complete official patch notes verify them.

What carries over to a new adventure?
Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 official web manual describes starting a new adventure with your current level and equipment carried over. It also says you can skip the opening and begin after arriving in Vernworth. This describes a new-adventure feature generally; it does not specify a complete Hard Mode carryover inventory. The available wording does not settle whether items, quests, world state, or other character data are retained when starting Hard Mode.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
Can you switch back to Normal Mode?
The available official information does not establish whether you can change difficulty during a run or whether returning to Normal requires starting over. A secondary report says update 4.000 added Hard Mode and an option to carry saved data into a new beginning, but it does not provide enough detail to determine the mode-switch rules or precisely what that restart retains. See MP1st’s update report as secondary coverage, not a definitive statement of the current rules.
Does Hard Mode require the Dark Arisen expansion?
Capcom announced Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen as a paid expansion scheduled for October 9, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Capcom says the Switch 2 version bundles the main game and expansion. That announcement does not establish that Hard Mode requires the expansion; the available information does not confirm the ownership requirement. Capcom’s announcement covers the expansion and platforms.
Rank #2
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
Which mode should you choose?
- Choose Normal if you want to avoid an unverified difficulty increase or are still progressing through the game.
- Consider Hard if you are an experienced player with a high-level character and want the challenge Capcom describes, while recognizing that the exact changes and reward differences are not established here.
- Before restarting or changing modes, read the in-game confirmation prompt carefully. The published manual information does not spell out Hard Mode’s complete carryover or switching rules.
Do not assume mechanics or rewards from the original Dragon’s Dogma or Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen apply to the sequel’s Hard Mode; they are different games.
