For most newcomers, start with DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition if you want the more widely listed current release and its documented edition options. Choose DRAGON QUEST VIII first if its curse-breaking story and older console-era presentation appeal more—or if you already have access to the version you want. Neither game needs to be played first for the other’s story.
Which should you play first?
Start with Dragon Quest XI S when platform access and extra presentation choices matter most. Square Enix lists it for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store. That broad official listing makes it the simpler starting point for many players, though local price and availability can vary.

Pick Dragon Quest VIII first if its premise sounds more compelling to you, or you already own or can readily access a version on your preferred platform. Its current availability and pricing are not established here by region, so check your local storefront or the used-game market before deciding.
This is a practical recommendation, not a verdict that one is universally better. The available facts do not establish a head-to-head ranking for combat, length, difficulty, performance, or visuals.

What kind of story appeals to you?
Dragon Quest XI S: a destiny-led adventure
Dragon Quest XI S follows the Luminary on a large-scale fantasy journey. If you want to begin with that central hero and his quest, this is the straightforward choice. Square Enix describes the story and the remaining game content as the same across the current platform versions listed for XI S in its official FAQ.
Dragon Quest VIII: a curse-breaking quest
Dragon Quest VIII begins with the people of Trodain transformed and the King and princess cursed. The hero sets out to pursue Dhoulmagus, traveling with allies including Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo. What does the XI S edition add?
The Definitive Edition documents several options beyond the core adventure: character-specific scenarios, a choice of music that includes an orchestral arrangement, Japanese voice acting, and the ability to switch between 2D and 3D presentation. Square Enix’s edition page describes these additions.
Those features make XI S a flexible entry point if you value presentation choices or want to explore character-focused scenarios. They do not, by themselves, show that the underlying adventure is a better fit for every player. The official FAQ says the story and remaining content are the same across the listed current XI S platform versions.
Rank #3
- Key Features Enhanced Graphics & Performance Enjoy improved textures, faster load times, and seamless gameplay tailored for Nintendo Switch 2’s upgraded hardware.
Check platform access before you decide
- For XI S: Square Enix’s platform announcement lists PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store; its current listing also includes Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm the options in your region before buying.
- For VIII: verify the exact release available to you. The official premise source does not establish current stock, regional platform availability, or pricing for its legacy versions, so there is no reliable universal buying recommendation here.
If both are equally accessible, decide by story hook and by whether XI S’s extra edition options matter to you. If only one is convenient to play, that is a sensible first choice: the comparison does not establish a required order between these separate adventures.
