Dragon Ball Legends Team-Building Terms Explained: Z Abilities, Bench Units, and Synergy

Z Abilities only support characters that meet their stated conditions. Learn how to check targets, use off-field party members, and build synergy around your battle team.

In Dragon Ball Legends, Z Abilities are party effects that apply only to characters matching their stated conditions, while a “bench unit” is a player term for a party member not selected to fight. Strong team synergy starts by matching the core team’s Tags or Episodes to useful Z Ability targets, then checking that the three fighters you take into battle also have suitable roles and element coverage.

What is a Z Ability?

A Z Ability is a character’s party effect, with its own targets and conditions. It is not automatically a universal buff for every ally: an ability might improve a specified Tag or Episode, so characters outside that group will not receive that effect. Bandai Namco’s party formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities and looking for characters with shared Tags or Episodes.

To check an ability, open the character’s details and select the Ability tab. The beginner notice “Start Off Right With ‘Let’s Go, Legends!’” says a white glow in Party Formation indicates that Z Abilities are applying. The number at the bottom of a character icon shows how many Z and Zenkai Abilities are applying to that character. Treat that number as a quick check, not a measure of how strong or useful the effects are: read the effects and their targets.

What is a bench unit?

The official battle overview describes a party of six, from which you choose three characters to use in battle. “Bench unit” is common player shorthand for one of the party members not selected among those three. The term describes a role in team-building conversation; the official guidance is framed around party members and party effects, rather than defining “bench unit” as a game term. A character outside your battle selections can still matter when its Z Ability applies to the fighters you intend to use. But a popular character, high rarity, or high power level alone does not make it a useful bench choice. Check which of your core fighters benefit from its effect, what the effect actually provides, and whether another party member would support them better.

What does team synergy mean?

For team-building, synergy means that party effects and battle roles work together. Shared Tags or Episodes can make more Z Abilities apply, but a functional team is about more than matching one label or maximizing the icon count. Element matchups and complementary character roles matter too.

Bandai Namco’s 2021 strategy feature illustrates both ideas with SS4 Gogeta. His Z Ability targets GT, expands to Fusion Warrior at ★3, and expands to Saiyan at ★6. The feature also describes a YEL Vegito supporting a GRN SS4 Gogeta against an unfavorable element matchup. This is a historical illustration of ability thresholds and coverage, not a current team recommendation.

Character-specific targets can change with ability level and character updates. In a notice dated 2026-09-22 UTC, Bandai Namco listed Z Ability II for 1st Form Frieza: Dodoria & Zarbon (Assist) as targeting Lineage of Evil, Powerful Opponent, and Frieza Force; Z Ability III also adds a Strike Defense effect for Lineage of Evil. The notice says the posted information is under development and advises checking in-game after the character is added. Use the ability level and date whenever relying on a named character example.

How to build a party around your battle team

  1. Choose your battle core. Decide which characters you want among the three fighters selected for battle, then note Tags or Episodes they share.
  2. Inspect each character. Open Character Details and check the Tags, Episode, and Ability tab to see what its Z Ability targets.
  3. Find possible matches. Use the Party Formation filter to find characters with the Tag or Episode you want to support.
  4. Check who benefits. Use the in-game indicator as a quick check for applied Z and Zenkai Abilities, then read each effect to confirm which core characters receive it and what it boosts.
  5. Use remaining slots deliberately. Consider party members whose effects support the core, along with element coverage and complementary battle roles. Compare candidates by target, effect and ability level rather than by the applied-ability count alone.
  6. Recheck current details. When a character is new or its information changes, verify its Ability tab in-game; published notices may be provisional.

How to compare two candidates for the same slot

There is no universal ranking formula in the official guidance that weighs every ability, role, and matchup. Instead, compare the actual trade-offs for your intended party:

  • Target fit: Which Tags or Episodes does each character support, and do your intended fighters meet those conditions?
  • Effect and level: What does the ability boost, and at which Z Ability level does the stated target or effect apply?
  • Battle coverage: If you plan to select the character for battle, does it add useful element coverage or a complementary role?
  • Party contribution: Is the character one of your three fighters, or is its main value an applicable party effect from the other slots?

The official game overview states that Dragon Ball Legends has over 700 playable characters and uses a structure of three battle selections from a party of six; the count can change as characters are added. Neither figure measures team performance. The useful question is whether each party member’s actual effect supports the fighters and plan you have chosen.
