Dragon Age: The Veilguard Beginner’s Guide to Classes, Combat, and Companions

A practical starter guide to Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s classes, combat systems, companion abilities, difficulty settings, and exploration.

Choose the class whose weapons and pace appeal to you, then learn enemy defenses and use your two mission companions to build effective ability combinations. You are not locked into one setup: outside combat, you can change ability loadouts and refund skill-tree choices. Difficulty, combat assistance, and exploration guidance can also be adjusted to suit your preferences.

How to choose a class

Class is best treated as a playstyle choice, not a ranking. Electronic Arts’ class overview describes the available combat styles but does not establish that one is objectively stronger or easier. Choose the weapons and actions you are most interested in using.

Class Weapons and range Combat feel
Warrior Sword and shield or two-handed weapons Defensive sword-and-shield fighting or heavier attacks
Mage Spells at range or close quarters Varied spellcasting
Rogue Bow or dual swords Fast movement and precise attacks

These descriptions come from EA’s class overview; they are not comparative balance testing. Your initial choice need not dictate a fixed ability setup: EA says Rook’s abilities and skill-tree selections can be changed outside combat.

How combat and builds work

Pay attention to enemy defenses

EA says enemy types have weaknesses and resistances. When an enemy is giving you trouble, consider whether your current abilities and companion choices suit that opponent rather than repeating the same attacks. The official beginner tips describe this system and the ability-swapping option.

Develop and revise Rook’s skill tree

Rook earns skill points by leveling. The Constellation skill tree includes class and weapon skills, assignable abilities, upgrades, traits, and stat boosts. EA says you can refund individual nodes or the full tree without spending a resource, so experimentation does not require committing to every early choice. You can also swap Rook’s and companions’ abilities outside combat. As the Dragon Age Team puts it, “You can swap your abilities, and those of your companions, at any time outside of combat.” (EA, October 31, 2024.)

Pair companion abilities for detonations

Companions add a tactical layer to action combat. Their abilities include Primers and Detonators; each Primer has a matching Detonator. Applying the right pairing triggers a detonation that deals increased area damage and stagger. EA’s example is Rook using Toxic Dash to prime Sundered, followed by Neve’s Icebreaker to detonate it. Treat that as an illustration of the system, not a required build. “Each Primer has a matching Detonator,” says the Dragon Age Community Team in its progression and companions guide (September 4, 2024).

How companions fit into your party

Rook can take two companions on a mission. The team has seven companions, each with their own expertise and abilities. Choose the two who best complement the mission and the ability combinations you want to use; the game’s system rewards coordinating their skills rather than treating them as passive support.

Companions also progress independently: each has levels and gear, and EA says each companion level grants two skill points. Conversations, companion quests, and decisions can contribute to their experience. Talking with companions and taking on their quests is therefore part of developing the party, as well as following its stories. EA describes companion and faction stories as central and says side content and companion quests affect later stages. That broad guidance does not establish a specific consequence for every individual choice. If you want to preserve story surprises, avoid detailed quest walkthroughs.

Difficulty and comfort settings

EA lists six difficulty options. The descriptions below are the publisher’s guidance, not a claim that one setting suits every player.

Option What EA says it emphasizes or allows
Storyteller One of the listed difficulty options; a specific description is not stated in the cited overview.
Keeper Party composition and equipment over reaction speed.
Adventurer Equal emphasis on combat, party composition, and equipment.
Underdog One of the listed difficulty options; a specific description is not stated in the cited overview.
Nightmare Cannot be reversed without starting a new playthrough.
Unbound Lets you customize settings.

The list and descriptions are from EA’s difficulty and accessibility overview. In addition to choosing a preset, you can adjust settings such as parry timing, aim assist, and enemy aggression. The same EA resource describes exploration presets for wayfinding guidance and how close you need to be before interactable objects are highlighted. Use these controls to make play more comfortable; they are options, not a measure of whether you are playing correctly.

Exploration and what to do after the Prologue

Exploration opens after the Prologue. EA recommends investigating areas for extra quests and loot, and says side content and companion quests can affect later stages. Make time to explore and check in with companions instead of treating the main mission as the only route through the game. Rook’s maximum level is 50, according to EA’s Journal #7 (September 4, 2024); the publisher’s information does not make that a target you need to reach before progressing through the story.
