DPI vs. PPI: What’s the Difference?

PPI describes image pixels per inch; DPI describes a printer’s output dots. Learn how print size determines effective PPI and why changing a resolution field alone does not add detail.

PPI measures image pixels per inch; DPI measures the physical dots a printer puts on paper per inch. They describe different stages of making a print. For a given image, its pixel dimensions and intended print size determine its effective PPI; the printer’s DPI describes its output. The terms are sometimes used loosely in software and everyday conversation, so it helps to ask which stage a resolution number refers to.

What do PPI and DPI mean?

PPI: image or display pixel density

PPI means pixels per inch. For print, it describes how densely the source image’s pixels are distributed across the final physical size. Adobe’s formula is: number of pixels divided by image size in inches equals pixels per inch. Adobe’s PPI guide explains this relationship.

DPI: printer output dots

DPI means dots per inch. It describes the physical dots a printer places on the page. A printer may use multiple dots of ink to reproduce the colors and tones represented by image pixels, so printer DPI is not a one-to-one count of source pixels. Adobe notes that printer resolution affects printed detail, but is not the same as image resolution. Its Photoshop printer-resolution guidance, last updated February 23, 2026, gives 720 to 2880 dpi as a range in which most inkjet printers operate; that is general guidance, not a specification for every printer.

Is 300 DPI the same as 300 PPI?

No. 300 PPI means 300 image pixels per inch at a particular physical size. 300 DPI means a printer places or renders 300 dots per inch. A file that is 300 PPI does not require a 300-DPI printer, nor does a printer’s DPI setting tell you the image’s effective PPI. When software labels an image-resolution field “DPI,” it may be using the term loosely for a PPI value; check whether the setting applies to image dimensions or printer output.

Calculate effective PPI for your print size

Divide the image’s pixel dimension by the corresponding final print dimension in inches. Use width with width or height with height. The resulting number is the effective PPI along that dimension.

Image width Print width Effective PPI
3,000 pixels 10 inches 300 PPI
3,000 pixels 20 inches 150 PPI

These examples apply Adobe’s calculation; they do not guarantee a particular visible result. Source detail, print process, viewing distance, and other image factors also affect perceived quality. If an image is cropped, calculate from the remaining pixel dimensions, not the uncropped original.

What PPI do you need to print?

There is no single PPI that is ideal for every print. Adobe says at least 220 PPI is usually sufficient for high-quality photo prints on an inkjet printer, and describes 300 PPI as a common high-quality print target. These are practical rules of thumb, not mandatory standards or guarantees. A large print intended to be viewed from farther away may work at a lower effective PPI than a small image inspected closely. Ask the print provider or consult the printer’s documentation when a particular output process has its own requirements.

If you are choosing an inkjet photo printer, match the device to the print sizes and materials you use, and follow its output guidance rather than assuming that one DPI figure defines the PPI your files need.

Does changing DPI or PPI in Photoshop make an image sharper?

Not by itself. With resampling turned off, changing the resolution value does not change the pixel count; it changes the physical size implied by those pixels. For example, the same pixel dimensions assigned a higher PPI correspond to a smaller print size. With resampling turned on, the editor changes pixel dimensions by adding or removing pixels, but interpolation does not recover original detail that the camera or source image never captured. To assess print suitability, use the actual pixel dimensions and intended print size, rather than relying on a metadata number alone.

How does LPI fit into print resolution?

LPI means lines per inch and describes halftone screen frequency. It is distinct from both source-image PPI and printer-output DPI. Halftone screening converts continuous tones into patterns of dots; it is one reason printer dots and image pixels do not correspond one for one. Adobe’s general guidance is for image resolution to be 1.5 to 2 times the screen frequency for best halftone results. The appropriate relationship depends on the device and process, so follow the print provider’s or equipment maker’s specifications. See Adobe’s Illustrator print setup guidance for more context.

What do DPI and PPI mean for screens and scanners?

Screen images

For an image displayed on a screen, its pixel dimensions and the target display context are usually more useful than a nominal print-density value. 72 PPI is a common convention, not a required web standard. The image’s actual dimensions, display equipment, and loading-time considerations matter more to practical screen use.

Scanners

A scanner’s selected sampling rate does not prove that it captures the same amount of optical detail. Optics, noise, alignment, and signal processing affect what the device can resolve. The U.S. National Archives explains that true optical resolution is assessed by how well equipment resolves fine detail on a test target, rather than by the scanner setting alone. Its discussion concerns digitization, including U.S. federal permanent records, and is not a universal specification for personal scanning or every jurisdiction. Read the National Archives’ 2023 explanation for that context.
