Short answer: the original Y2mate.com was shut down on October 14, 2025, after enforcement action announced by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Current sites using “Y2Mate” are not automatically official, safe, or operated by the same company. Download only videos you own or are authorized to save; for other content, use YouTube’s official offline features or obtain permission.
What happened to Y2mate.com?
Y2Mate historically described a browser-based stream-ripping service that accepted a video URL and offered MP3 or MP4 conversion. On October 14, 2025, IFPI announced that the original Y2mate.com operator had agreed to permanently shut down Y2mate.com and 11 related sites following enforcement action in Vietnam. IFPI said the sites had received more than 620 million combined visits during the preceding 12 months. Read the IFPI announcement.
That announcement applies to the original service, not every domain that now uses the Y2Mate name. Search results can include clones, mirrors, advertising pages, unrelated applications and browser extensions. A page loading successfully does not establish that it is authentic, secure or legally authorized.
Can you still get an MP4 from a Y2Mate-branded site?
Some Y2Mate-branded pages still advertise a paste-link, format-selection and download workflow, but availability and behavior vary. Their terms may reserve the right to change, restrict, charge for or discontinue features without notice and disclaim uninterrupted or secure operation. See an example of those terms.

Do not treat a “Download” button, an “official” page title or an HD/4K claim as proof of legitimacy. A button may open an advertisement, redirect to another domain or offer an unwanted installer instead of a video. No current Y2Mate domain can be identified from the keyword alone as the official successor to Y2mate.com.
Is downloading a YouTube video as MP4 legal?
Copyright and permission
Copyright owners generally control copying and distribution of their works. Downloading or redistributing another creator’s video without permission can infringe copyright, depending on the facts and your country. YouTube explains its copyright principles at YouTube Help.
Potentially lawful examples include your own upload, written permission from the rights holder, public-domain material, openly licensed content used within its license terms, or a video the rights holder explicitly provides for download. “Free” describes the price of a converter, not your legal right to copy the video.
YouTube platform rules
YouTube’s developer policies restrict services that enable downloads outside the YouTube Premium experience or separate audio and video components from YouTube videos. That is a platform-rules issue and should not be confused with a claim that every personal download is automatically a criminal offense. Read the developer policies.

Fair use is not a blanket download right
YouTube describes fair-use analysis as fact-specific; ultimately, courts decide whether a particular use qualifies. Personal use alone does not guarantee fair-use protection. YouTube’s fair-use guidance explains the factors.
Why lookalike converter sites are risky
- Fake download buttons and repeated redirects can lead to unrelated or deceptive pages.
- Notification prompts can send unwanted browser alerts later.
- Fake antivirus warnings may pressure you to install software.
- Extensions and bundled installers can introduce unwanted or malicious code.
- A file with an
.exe,.msi,.dmgor similar executable extension is not an MP4. - Phishing pages may request your YouTube, Google, email or payment password.
- Advertising, tracking and site behavior can change without notice.
No evidence establishes that every Y2Mate-branded domain is malicious. The problem is that ownership and security are difficult to verify across a fragmented set of domains.
Safety checklist
- Do not install an extension merely to download one video.
- Do not grant notification, camera, microphone or unnecessary account permissions.
- Expect a video filename to end in a format such as
.mp4,.webmor.mkv, not an installer extension. - Scan unexpected files with current operating-system security tools before opening them.
- Close a page that redirects repeatedly instead of retrying.
- If you allowed notifications, revoke that site’s permission in your browser settings.
- If you ran an installer, uninstall it, scan the system and review recently installed applications and extensions.
Official ways to save or watch YouTube content
Your own uploads: YouTube Studio
For a video you uploaded yourself, use the first-party workflow:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Select the video.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Download.
YouTube says the direct download may provide an MP4 in 720p or 360p, depending on the video, and an individual video may be downloaded up to five times in 24 hours subject to YouTube’s restrictions. Removed videos, strikes and some licensed audio can affect availability. For bulk retrieval, use Google Takeout and select YouTube and YouTube Music. YouTube’s download instructions.

yt-dlp -F "VIDEO_URL"Format IDs vary by video and over time. Separate video and audio streams may require merging components. Failures can result from an outdated installation, changed site delivery, cookies or headers, throttling, an unsupported URL or an incompatible codec. The project’s FAQ covers these issues. Never disable security software to force a download.
Graphical applications
Products such as 4K Download can be easier than a command line, but licensing, feature limits and supported sites can change. Their terms place lawful-use responsibility on the user and do not override copyright or platform rules. Review the current product information and terms of use before installing or paying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.MP4 does not guarantee compatibility
MP4 is a container, not a guarantee that every device can play the file. The container may hold H.264, VP9, AV1 or another video codec, along with AAC, Opus or another audio codec. Resolution and frame rate also matter.
- For broad device and editing compatibility, prefer H.264 video with AAC audio when the authorized source offers it.
- If a file plays on one device but not another, inspect its codecs and profile rather than assuming the extension is wrong.
- If audio is missing, the download may contain video and audio separately, or the selected format may not include an audio stream.
- If playback fails, try a lawful lower-resolution or more widely supported format and test it in a reputable media player.
Choosing the right method
| Method | Best for | Produces a transferable MP4? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio | Your own uploads | Usually, subject to YouTube’s available resolution | Not a general downloader for other creators’ videos |
| YouTube Premium | Official offline viewing | No; encrypted in-app playback | Requires a subscription and supported region/account |
| yt-dlp | Technical users with authorization | Often, depending on selected streams and codecs | Command line, changing sites and possible troubleshooting |
| 4K Download | Users who prefer a graphical interface | Product- and source-dependent | Licensing and support limits can change |
If a download goes wrong
- Check the extension, filename and plausible file size before opening it.
- Do not open an executable disguised as a video.
- Use a reputable media player to test a genuine media file.
- Update legitimate software only from its official source.
- Review browser notification permissions and remove unfamiliar extensions.
- After running a suspicious installer, uninstall it, scan the computer and inspect recently installed programs.
- Do not enter credentials into a converter page or disable antivirus protections.

What is the official Y2Mate website?
There is no reliably verifiable current official successor that readers can infer from the Y2Mate name. Treat similarly branded domains as unrelated until ownership and security can be independently established.
Can I download any YouTube video as a free MP4?
No. Download only content you own or are authorized to save, and consider both copyright law and YouTube’s platform rules.
Is YouTube Premium an MP4 downloader?
No. Premium provides encrypted offline playback inside supported YouTube experiences, not a normal transferable MP4.
What if a Y2Mate page asks for an extension or installer?
Cancel the download. Do not install software or grant permissions merely to obtain a video; revoke notifications and scan your device if you already accepted anything.
