Current status: Google no longer provides Android-version or regular security updates for the Pixel 5a with 5G. Android 14 appears to be its final major release, and Android 15 was not provided. The former extended repair program for certain black-screen and no-power failures ended June 30, 2024. Treat this page as a final-support troubleshooting guide, not an active promise of future patches.
Pixel 5a update status
Google’s current support list places the Pixel 5a with 5G among phones that no longer receive Android version or security updates. A Google Pixel Community response dated the support endpoint as August 1, 2024, and stated that Android 15 would not be supplied.
Google Play system updates and Play Store app updates may still appear independently. A newer Play system date does not restore full Pixel firmware or security-patch support, so the phone’s operating-system security posture will age over time.
Check what your phone is actually running
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Android version.
- Record the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update and Build number.
Google documents these fields in its version and update instructions. Menu labels can vary slightly by software version; some devices show System update while others show Software updates.

What was the final Pixel 5a software?
Android 14 appears to be the Pixel 5a’s final major Android version. Google’s published Pixel 5a driver binaries show Android 14 releases through June 2024, while the support response cited above says Android 15 was not coming. Do not describe a particular build as the final OTA without checking the individual phone and Google’s full OTA archive; the driver-binary archive alone does not establish that exact final build.
Phones running a custom ROM, rooted system or modified image can behave differently from factory software. Google warns that modified Android reduces some of its security protections. Reinstalling official software can also erase data, so do not unlock the bootloader or flash images casually.
Confirmed display and power failures
Google’s former Pixel 5a extended repair program listed a blank or black screen while the phone was powered on, a phone that would not turn on, and other display- or power-related symptoms subject to inspection. The program covered eligible U.S.-purchased devices and ended June 30, 2024; it is not a current promise of free repair.
A black display can indicate a failed screen, power circuit, storage component or motherboard. A reset or software reinstall cannot repair those parts.
Safe checks for a black screen or dead phone
- Remove the case and inspect for impact, liquid exposure, cracks, bending or a raised rear panel.
- Connect a known-good USB-C cable and charger, then leave the phone in a cool, ventilated place.
- Hold Power for about 30 seconds. Google gives this method for the Pixel 5a and earlier.
- If nothing appears, hold Volume Up + Power for up to 30 seconds to try the earlier-Pixel Fastboot combination.
- If Fastboot or Recovery appears, photograph the screen and avoid wiping the device when data recovery matters.
If there is no charging indication, vibration, sound, display, Fastboot screen or computer detection, hardware failure becomes increasingly likely. Check current eligibility and regional options with Google or an authorized provider rather than assuming the old program still applies.
Battery drain and overheating
Not every battery complaint is an update bug. On a several-year-old Pixel 5a, battery wear, weak cellular signal, high brightness, navigation, heat, demanding apps and charging hardware are all plausible. Google also says a Pixel can temporarily use more power after an update or new setup while it downloads, indexes and optimizes software.

Battery-drain triage
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage.
- Identify apps with unusually high background use and restrict or uninstall them.
- Compare behavior on Wi-Fi and cellular, and test in Safe Mode.
- Check whether the phone is hot while idle.
- If drain remains extreme in Safe Mode or while idle, suspect battery wear or hardware.
Do not treat battery “calibration” as a guaranteed repair. Stop using the phone and seek service if the rear panel lifts, the phone smells unusual or the battery becomes abnormally hot. Google’s safety guidance warns against opening the phone yourself.
When warmth is normal—and when it is not
Gaming, video recording, flashlight use, charging, direct sunlight and other heavy workloads can make the phone reduce performance or shut down temporarily. Google specifies an operating range of 32–95°F (0–35°C) and warns against leaving it where temperatures may exceed 113°F (45°C).
Stop charging, move the phone out of sunlight, remove a thick case temporarily and let it cool naturally. Never use a freezer or ice. Repeated shutdowns while the phone is cool and lightly used point more toward battery or board failure than normal thermal protection.
Boot loops, freezes and random restarts
Separate a one-time restart from an app crash, a loop at the Google logo, a loop after entering the PIN, a device that cannot stay in Fastboot or Recovery, and a completely unresponsive phone.
- Force-restart with the Power button.
- Remove recently installed or suspicious apps and test Safe Mode.
- Check free storage if Android stays usable.
- Back up immediately if the phone becomes accessible.
- Consider Google’s Pixel software-repair tool only after checking whether its workflow wipes data.
- Use a factory reset only after data-preservation options are exhausted.

Manual Recovery reset (destructive)
Use this only when your data is backed up or unrecoverable.

- Turn the phone off.
- Hold Volume Up + Power on this earlier Pixel model.
- Select Recovery mode.
- At “No command,” hold Power and briefly press Volume Up.
- Choose Wipe data/factory reset, then Factory data reset.
- Select Reboot system now.
These controls are documented by Google at Fastboot and reset instructions. A reset can fix software corruption, but not a failed display, storage chip or motherboard.
Charging and USB-C problems
- Try another known-good USB-C cable, charger and wall outlet.
- Inspect the port with a light; do not insert metal tools.
- Allow the phone to cool before charging.
- If a liquid or debris warning appears, follow Google’s instructions instead of forcing the connector.
- Charge with ventilation, never under bedding or on a soft surface.
Intermittent charging with multiple accessories, or charging that works only when the cable is held at an angle, warrants repair. Google’s safety requirements are in the Pixel safety guide.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular and 5G issues
First determine whether the fault follows the phone, a network or one accessory. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi, try another Bluetooth accessory, and note whether the problem occurs only on cellular. VPN, firewall and ad-blocking apps, carrier provisioning, saved-network corruption and regional-band compatibility can all matter.
- Toggle the affected radio off and on, then restart.
- Forget and re-add the Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth accessory.
- Test in Safe Mode.
- Use Settings → System → Reset options to reset network settings.
- Contact the carrier if calls or mobile data remain unavailable after the reset.
Network reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings. Google’s guidance is at Wi-Fi troubleshooting. Do not factory-reset first unless backups are confirmed.

- Test the component in more than one app.
- Restart and install available Play Store app updates.
- Check permissions and test in Safe Mode.
- Remove cases or screen protectors that obstruct microphones, sensors or touch.
- Clean openings carefully without inserting objects.
- Reserve factory reset for a final software test.

These are diagnostic inferences, not Google defect classifications. A black screen with sounds or vibration can be a display failure; a silent dead phone can be a power or motherboard failure.

Protect data before escalating
- Backed up: a reset or official software repair may be reasonable.
- Not backed up and still boots: back up before changing software.
- Not backed up and stuck: avoid wiping, bootloader unlocking or flashing factory images until recovery options are considered.
- Hot, swollen, wet or physically damaged: safety takes priority over data recovery.
Google notes that factory images erase data, while a full OTA sideload is generally safer and normally does not require an unlocked bootloader or wipe. That workflow applies to compatible software situations, not failed hardware; see Google’s factory-image and OTA documentation.
How to document and report a remaining bug
Before contacting Google, record the Android version, security patch, build number, exact reproduction steps, affected app and version, Safe Mode result, screenshots or video, and whether the problem survives a clean setup. Use the Pixel Help Center or Pixel Help Community. Community reports are useful evidence, but they are not confirmation that Google has acknowledged a defect.

Google’s former special repair program is closed. Current price and availability depend on country, fault, parts and inspection; check Google’s repair flow or an authorized provider such as uBreakiFix. A newer supported phone is the more durable choice when current security updates are required.

Will the Pixel 5a get Android 15?
No. Google’s support response stated that Android 15 would not be provided, and the phone is now outside official update support.
Can Google still repair a Pixel 5a for free?
The extended program for eligible display and power failures ended June 30, 2024. Any current repair is case-specific and must be checked for your region and device.
Can I install a newer Android version manually?
Custom software may exist, but unlocking and flashing can erase data, reduce security and complicate diagnosis. Do not attempt it on a phone whose data is not backed up.
