Prerequisites
- Internet access (downloads can be several GB; stable connections matter).
- 64-bit PC: Windows 11 installation media is for x64. (MS won’t offer an x86 ISO.)
- Sufficient disk space: keep at least 20 GB free to download and later extract/install.
- MDM/organization rules (if applicable): some networks block Microsoft downloads.
Choose your target
Microsoft offers choices like language and editions (when applicable). If you’re unsure, pick the language you’ll actually use during setup, then you can still change it later based on what Windows supports for your installed edition.
Official method #1: Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft (Windows 11 download page)
Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page provides a straightforward way to download an ISO. This is usually the simplest route if the page loads normally in your browser.
Choose the correct edition and language
On Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page, you’ll typically see controls for language selection. Make sure these match your intended install setup.
- Select the Windows 11 option where prompted.
- Choose the language dropdown option.
- Verify that the resulting ISO label matches what you expect (edition and language).
Start the ISO download
When you’ve selected the language, the page should provide a direct download for the ISO. Click the button that starts downloading the disk image.
- Open your browser and go to Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page (search for Microsoft Windows 11 download ISO if you don’t have the link).
- Under the download options, select Download for the ISO.
- Confirm any prompts from your browser (file downloads may trigger a security prompt).
Save and identify the file
Save the ISO to a known folder (like Downloads). After it completes, confirm you have a single .iso file rather than a partial download.
- Look for a filename ending in
.iso. - If your browser creates temporary parts (rare), wait until the file finishes fully.
Official method #2: Generate an ISO with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool
The Media Creation Tool is Microsoft’s utility for building installation media. It can create an ISO file (instead of a USB stick) while handling some of the download complexity for you.

- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.

- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
Download and run the tool
- Go to Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool download page.
- Download the MediaCreationTool.exe file.
- Run it (right-click → Run as administrator if your system is restrictive).
Create installation media (ISO) instead of a USB
During the setup wizard, pick the option that creates an ISO. The tool will download the required components and write the ISO file to your chosen location.

- In the wizard, accept the license terms.
- Select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file).
- Choose ISO file.
- Select the language and edition when prompted.
- Choose where to save the ISO file.
- Let the tool finish downloading and creating the ISO.
When this method works, it’s a strong fallback if the direct ISO download page is flaky in your region, behind strict proxies, or blocked by content filters.
How to verify the ISO you downloaded
Verification matters because interrupted downloads can produce a broken ISO that won’t mount or boot. Microsoft typically provides hash values and release metadata; use at least one integrity check.
Check the SHA-256 hash (recommended)
Find the official SHA-256 value for the ISO version you downloaded (Microsoft usually publishes it alongside the ISO details on their download page or related documentation). Then compute the local hash.
- Open PowerShell on your Windows PC.
- Run this command, replacing the path with your ISO location:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path "C:\Users\YourName\Downloads\Win11.iso"
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare the output hash to the Microsoft-published SHA-256. If they match, the ISO is consistent with the official file.

Confirm file integrity with basic checks
- Make sure the ISO file size is stable (no “growing” after completion).
- Try mounting it by right-clicking the ISO → Mount. If mounting fails, suspect corruption or a wrong file.
Making a bootable USB from the ISO (and avoiding common traps)
Most people use the ISO to create bootable installation media. A proper USB makes the difference between “it boots to setup” and “it loops or can’t find the OS.”
Using Rufus (Windows)
Rufus is popular because it’s fast and gives you control over partition schemes. Use it carefully and match your firmware mode.
- Insert your USB drive (commonly 8 GB or larger).
- Open Rufus and select the USB drive under Device.
- Set Boot selection to Disk or ISO image.
- Click Select and choose your Windows 11 ISO.
- For Partition scheme:
- Choose GPT if your system uses UEFI (most modern systems do).
- Choose MBR only if you specifically need legacy BIOS compatibility.
- Set Target system to match (usually UEFI (non CSM) for GPT).
- Start the process and wait for completion.
If Rufus offers an option about compatibility or secure boot, follow what matches your setup. For Secure Boot systems, UEFI + GPT is usually the cleanest path.

If you prefer a Microsoft-native workflow, Media Creation Tool can create a USB directly. That avoids third-party tools entirely, though you can’t always fine-tune partition details the way Rufus allows.
Clean installation vs upgrade: what the ISO is best for
The ISO is a “source file.” How you use it determines whether you’re doing a fresh install, repair, or an in-place upgrade.
- Clean installation: boot from USB and install Windows 11 to a target partition. This is the most common reason to download an ISO.
- Repair/restore: boot from installation media to run recovery options.
- In-place upgrade: mount the ISO and run setup from within Windows to upgrade without wiping (depending on eligibility).
Troubleshooting download and file issues
When Microsoft downloads fail, it’s usually network-related or browser-related. The quickest fixes involve changing browser, disabling restrictive extensions, or using the Media Creation Tool.

Download button doesn’t appear or “Retry” loops
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox). Some pages behave differently with tracking blockers.
- Disable extensions that interfere with downloads (ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools).
- Clear cache/cookies for Microsoft domains and reload the page.
- If you’re on a managed device, check whether a corporate policy blocks “unknown file downloads.”
ISO download stalls or restarts
- Use a wired connection if possible.
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxy to test whether the network is interrupting large downloads.
- Try again during off-peak hours (big ISO downloads can be impacted by congestion).
- If repeated, switch methods: download via Media Creation Tool (often more resilient).
File won’t mount or shows as corrupted
- Delete the ISO and re-download (corruption from a partial download is common).
- Verify SHA-256 against Microsoft’s published hash.
- Try re-mounting from Windows Explorer (right-click → Mount) or in a different location (avoid paths with unusual characters).
Wrong edition or unexpected language
Edition/language mismatches usually originate from choosing options on the Microsoft page or in the Media Creation Tool wizard. If you need the correct ISO, re-download with the correct language/edition selection.
Network/DNS/VPN/firewall problems
- Try changing DNS (for example, switch briefly to a public resolver) if the download repeatedly fails at the same point.
- Confirm your firewall isn’t blocking Microsoft content delivery domains.
- If you’re behind a strict proxy, Media Creation Tool may work better than a direct browser download.
Alternatives when the official page is unavailable
Sometimes the Microsoft download page is temporarily unreachable from your network. The goal is still the same: obtain a verified ISO that matches Microsoft’s published version.
Use the Media Creation Tool only
If the direct ISO page is failing, the Media Creation Tool typically provides a reliable path to generate the ISO on your machine. It also reduces the number of browser-handled download steps.
Windows Update for upgrades (not ISO-centric)
If your goal is upgrading an existing Windows installation, you can use Windows Update. That won’t give you an ISO file, but it can be simpler if you don’t need offline media.

Why does my USB boot into the wrong setup menu?
This is usually a firmware/partition mismatch (UEFI vs legacy BIOS) or a partition scheme error (GPT vs MBR). Re-create the USB with settings that match your system’s boot mode.
What if I can’t find a specific version (like a particular feature update)?
Microsoft typically serves the latest Windows 11 ISO for general download. If you need a specific build exactly, rely on Microsoft-published release information and hashes so you can confirm you’re getting the right release.
How do I know which ISO I downloaded?
Use the ISO filename and—best practice—compare its SHA-256 hash against the official published value for that specific release.
Bottom Line
To download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft, use the Windows 11 download page for a direct ISO file, or use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool when the direct method is unreliable. In both cases, save the .iso file, verify integrity with SHA-256 when possible, then create bootable media with a tool matched to your firmware (UEFI + GPT is the common default).
Do it once, verify it, and you’ll avoid the frustrating “corrupt ISO” cycle during setup.
