If your Discord Twitch Sub Role isn’t assigning, it’s rarely “broken” by itself. Most failures come from a bad Twitch-to-Discord connection, a role setup that can’t be applied, or subscription status that Discord hasn’t recognized yet.
This guide walks you through a 2024-friendly fix path that’s specific enough to follow step-by-step, including what to check, what to change, and what to try when the main method doesn’t work.

What the Discord Twitch Sub Role is (and why it fails)
Discord can assign roles based on Twitch subscriptions using Discord’s Twitch connection/integration. When it works, subscribing on Twitch (for the connected account) triggers a Discord role assignment inside the linked server.

Prerequisites before you change anything
- You have access to the Discord server settings (or you’re the server owner/admin).
- You’re logged into Twitch and Discord using the same identity you subscribed with on Twitch.
- Your server role exists and is positioned where it can be granted by Discord’s integration.
- You can check your Twitch subscription status (active, tier, and renewal date).
If any of those are missing, the fix steps won’t fully work—because Discord can’t assign a role it isn’t allowed to manage.
Fix #1: Reconnect Twitch and re-grant Discord permissions
This is the most common reliable reset. A stale OAuth connection can stop role updates even when the server still shows the integration.
- Open Discord and go to User Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Connections.
- Find Twitch and choose Disconnect.
- Reconnect Twitch by selecting Connect and authorize again in the Twitch login flow.
- After the connection finishes, restart Discord (full quit and reopen on desktop, or hard refresh on web).
- Return to your server’s integration settings and ensure Twitch is still linked.
Goal: force Discord to re-establish the permission scope that allows it to update roles for subscription events.

Role assignment won’t happen if the integration isn’t pointing at the role you think it is, or if the subscription trigger isn’t enabled for that server.
- In Discord, open your server Server Settings.
- Look for Integrations (or Connected Accounts, depending on your Discord UI).
- Find Twitch.
- Confirm the linked Twitch account is correct.
- Confirm the configured Sub role points to the role you expect.
- Save changes, then wait 1–10 minutes (role updates aren’t always instant).
If the UI shows multiple Twitch-linked options, ensure you’re editing the same server integration that’s connected to the Twitch account you’re testing with.

Fix #3: Confirm your Twitch subscription status and renewal window
Discord can only assign roles when it detects an active subscription. If you just subscribed, it can still take a bit for the event to propagate.
- On Twitch, check that your subscription is Active.
- Confirm the tier (e.g., Tier 1 / Tier 2 / Tier 3) if your server setup uses tier-specific roles.
- Check the next billing date and verify you didn’t unsubscribe or it lapsed.
- If it’s a fresh subscription, give it time: try after 15 minutes, then again after 60 minutes.
If you’re testing during the renewal moment, Discord may lag. Wait through the billing confirmation and then re-check.
Fix #4: Make sure the role is actually assignable
Some role configurations block integrations indirectly. Even if the role exists, it might be set up in a way Discord can’t apply.
- In Server Settings → Roles, select your intended Sub role.
- Confirm it’s not locked away from bots/integrations by any special settings.
- Ensure it’s not a role type that your server effectively prevents members from receiving.
- Try temporarily simplifying: remove custom constraints (only if you know you can restore them).
If you’re unsure, create a fresh test role (e.g., “Sub Test Role”) with minimal settings, map the integration to it, then test again.
Fix #5: Check Discord server permissions and role hierarchy
Role hierarchy issues are a top cause. If the integration/bot role can’t manage the target role, assignments silently fail.

- In Discord, open Server Settings → Roles.
- Check role positions (drag order) so the Sub role is below the integration-managed role level.
- If you see any rule that prevents role management, correct it.
- Re-test after changes.
If your server uses many custom bots, ensure the correct role hierarchy is intact for the specific integration responsible for Twitch.

Fix #6: Allow Discord to update roles (member updates)
Discord needs permissions to apply roles to members. If the integration can’t perform role updates, you’ll never get the sub role even with a perfect Twitch subscription.
- Identify the integration-managed account involved with Twitch role assignment (often an internal service role in the server).
- Check the permissions for that managed role in Server Settings → Roles.
- Confirm it has permission to manage roles for members (commonly tied to role management capabilities).
- Apply changes and retest within 5–15 minutes.
If you don’t see a clear managed account, don’t guess for long—use the “controlled test role” method in Fix #7 to isolate hierarchy/permission problems.
Fix #7: Troubleshoot with controlled tests
Testing isolates which part is failing: Twitch detection vs Discord role application. Do this with the smallest possible variables.
- Create a new role called Sub Test Role with basic settings.
- Map the Twitch sub integration to Sub Test Role instead of your real sub role.
- Use a test account that is definitely actively subscribed (or subscribe temporarily if you’re validating for the first time).
- After subscription is active, wait 15 minutes, then check the member’s role list.
- If it assigns to the test role, the integration works—then migrate to your intended role by adjusting hierarchy/permissions and removing the problem configuration.
If the test role never assigns, your issue is more likely connection/integration settings or Discord’s inability to apply roles.

Fix #8: If you just changed sub tier or switched accounts
Some servers set different roles for Tier 1/2/3 or treat changes as separate events. Also, if you switched Twitch accounts or changed Discord usernames, the mapping might not match what Discord expects.
- Confirm you’re testing with the exact Twitch account you originally subscribed with.
- If the server uses tier-specific roles, ensure the correct tier is active.
- Disconnect and reconnect Twitch again in Discord Connections (Fix #1).
- Give Discord up to 60 minutes after the tier change.
For safety, avoid changing multiple variables at once (tier + role hierarchy + reconnect) because it becomes impossible to tell what fixed it.
Common mistakes that stop sub roles from assigning
- Testing with the wrong Twitch account: common if you have multiple accounts or used a different email.
- Role hierarchy wrong: the target role sits above the integration’s capability.
- Mapping the integration to the wrong role: the server setting points to a different role than you think.
- Subscription not fully active: especially right after payment confirmation.
- Assuming it should be instant: propagation can take 10–60 minutes depending on event processing.
- Switching tiers and expecting instant role swaps: tier upgrades can lag and may require reconnection.
Troubleshooting checklist (fast path)
If you want the shortest “works most often” path, follow this order.
- Verify Twitch subscription is Active for the same account you’re testing.
- Reconnect Twitch in Discord Connections (disconnect + connect).
- Verify the server integration is set to the correct Sub role.
- Ensure role hierarchy allows assignment (target role positioned correctly).
- Create Sub Test Role, map integration to it, and re-test.
- If still failing after 60 minutes, stop making changes and collect evidence for support (server settings screenshots + timestamps).
That last step matters: constant changes can reset the signal and prolong the issue.

Comparisons: Twitch Sub Role vs Twitch follower-only role
Some servers also use follower-only roles. Those behave differently than subscription roles because followers are event-triggered by follow actions, while sub roles depend on paid subscription status.

| Feature | Trigger | Typical delay | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch Sub Role | Active subscription status | 10–60 minutes | OAuth connection or role hierarchy |
| Twitch Follower-only role | Follow event | Seconds to a few minutes | Wrong event mapping or integration disabled |
If follower roles work but sub roles don’t, your Twitch integration connection may be fine, but the sub-trigger role mapping or permissions are failing.
FAQ
Why does my Twitch Prime/Gifted sub not assign the role?
Discord sub-role triggers rely on Discord recognizing your subscription as active through Twitch’s connected account. If the server is tier-specific or if the subscription type doesn’t map as expected, the role may not apply. Reconnect Twitch in Discord and verify the subscription is active under the correct Twitch account.
How long should I wait after subscribing?
Commonly 10–60 minutes. If nothing changes after about an hour, reconnect Twitch (Fix #1) and verify the integration’s configured role mapping (Fix #2).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I fix it without server admin permissions?
Usually you can’t change the integration role mapping or role hierarchy without admin access. What you can do is reconnect Twitch in Discord Connections and confirm your Twitch subscription status and account match.
The role assigns, then disappears later. What causes that?
That usually points to subscription status changes (renewal failed, lapsed, tier changed) or an integration/account mismatch. Confirm active subscription status and then reconnect Twitch to reset the permission flow.
Does this work the same on iPhone, iPad, or Android?
The logic is the same, but the settings screens differ. Always verify the integration configuration from the server/admin side, and perform the Twitch connection reset from Discord’s Connections page on the device or desktop.
Bottom Line
If your Discord Twitch Sub Role isn’t working in 2024, the fastest reliable path is: confirm your Twitch subscription is truly active, reconnect Twitch in Discord Connections, then verify the server’s integration points to the correct role and that the role hierarchy allows assignment.
Use the controlled test role method to isolate the failure in minutes. Once you’ve identified whether it’s a connection problem or a role-permission problem, you can apply the fix to your real sub role and stop chasing delays.
