Download Linux Kernel Source Without Git: Tarballs, Clones, and Bundles

Get Linux kernel source without cloning a repository: choose a versioned kernel.org tarball, extract it, and use Git only when you need history, refs, or offline repository transfer.

You can download and extract Linux kernel source without cloning or keeping a Git repository: get a versioned source tarball from the Linux Kernel Archives. The kernel’s build documentation explicitly describes this route. Choose a tarball for a particular source snapshot; use Git when you need commit history, branches, refs, or future fetches.

How to download Linux kernel source without Git

  1. Open the official Linux Kernel Archives v6.x directory and choose the version you need. The listing is live, so available versions and files can change.
  2. Download that version’s .tar.xz or .tar.gz source archive. These are compressed source snapshots, not Git repositories.
  3. Extract the archive with a tool that supports its compression format, then enter the directory created by extraction. For example, on Linux, tar -xf linux-VERSION.tar.xz extracts an XZ tarball; replace VERSION with the version in the filename. For a gzip archive, use its actual .tar.gz filename instead.

The kernel documentation describes downloading a packaged archive from kernel.org, extracting it to a directory, and changing into the extracted subdirectory. You do not need a Git checkout simply to obtain a source tree.

Which kernel version should you choose?

Stable release for ordinary use

For a source snapshot to inspect or build, choose a stable release unless you specifically need pre-release testing. Check the current archive and release pages rather than relying on an old version number: both are live. The kernel.org release page identifies the current release state.

Pre-release versions for testing

Release candidates and other prepatch kernels are pre-releases aimed mostly at kernel developers and Linux enthusiasts, according to the release-page description. They may be appropriate when testing a change or a specific upcoming release, but they are not the default choice for a stable source snapshot. Confirm the status of a version on the current release page.

Tarball, Git clone, or Git bundle?

Method What you get Best for Main limitation
Official source tarball A compressed snapshot of a source tree Reading, building, or inspecting one kernel version without Git No Git history or refs; choose the version deliberately.
git clone A Git repository, an initial checkout, and remote-tracking branches Development, history and branch inspection, or fetching later updates It retrieves repository data; shallow or filtered options affect what is initially available.
Git bundle Git objects and refs in a file that can be used to clone or fetch Moving repository data offline when there is no active server connection It is a Git transfer format, not a plain extracted source archive; pushing into a bundle is unsupported.

Git’s archive command can also create an archive from a named tree. That describes Git’s archive behavior; it does not establish that a particular kernel.org tarball was produced with a specific git archive command.

When a smaller Git download is still useful

If you need a repository but want to limit the initial transfer, Git offers shallow and partial clones. They reduce what is initially obtained, but they remain Git clones rather than repository-free source downloads.

  • git clone --depth <n> truncates history to the specified commit depth. It implies --single-branch unless you override that behavior.
  • git clone --filter=blob:none uses partial-clone filtering to defer file contents until Git needs them.

These options suit workflows that still require Git’s repository features. For a fixed source snapshot, the official tarball is the simpler fit. Git documents clone behavior and these options in its git-clone manual.

When to use a Git bundle instead

A bundle is useful when you need to transfer repository objects and refs offline, not when you merely want files to extract. Git describes bundles as a way to transfer Git objects without an active server connection. A bundle can be used to clone or fetch, but not to push into. See the git-bundle manual for the format and supported operations.

Signatures and download verification

The kernel archive listing includes detached .tar.sign files alongside some source archives. Their presence alone does not verify a download, and the archive listing is not a complete verification procedure. Follow the current instructions from the Linux Kernel Archives signature page before treating an archive as verified.
