A woman told The Independent that her email and photos were compromised after she sent a phone to Google for repair. The report does not establish that Google’s repair operation caused the compromise or that Google personnel accessed or stole her images. Google reportedly concluded that the issue was not related to the device return merchandise authorization (RMA). The phone model and the technical route by which the account was accessed have not been established in the available reporting.
What was reported—and what is not established
The account is an allegation about a compromise that occurred after the woman sent her phone for repair. That sequence does not prove the repair service caused it. The Independent reported that Google’s conclusion was that the issue was not related to the device RMA. The available account does not establish how the email or photos were accessed, identify the phone model, or show that a technician viewed or took the images.

This is not evidence that Google repairs generally expose customers’ photos. It is also not enough to determine whether the reported compromise involved the phone itself, an online account, or another route.
Can a repair shop see the photos on your phone?
It depends on the device, its settings, and the repair procedure. A technician may need to check that a repair worked, but that does not mean every repair requires access to a customer’s personal files. Google describes Repair mode for eligible Pixel phones as a way to provide a limited environment for service without a factory reset. It is designed to help protect personal data; it is not a guarantee that every repair workflow is identical or that a phone is immune to every kind of compromise.

For any repair, follow the current instructions for the exact provider, location, and service channel. Avoid sharing your unlock code unless a documented diagnostic need requires it; if access is requested, ask what test requires it and whether it can be done in a limited service environment.
How Google Pixel Repair mode works
Google says Repair mode starts “a clean Android OS in a dedicated secure partition with limited functions.” Certain apps are paused by default, though they can be activated manually, and some first-party apps remain available for troubleshooting. The feature is intended to let technicians service eligible Pixel phones without a factory reset while limiting access to personal data.

Eligibility and supported repairs
Google lists Repair mode for Pixel phones running Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later and at least 2 GB of available space. Google says owners can use Repair mode or a factory reset for walk-in or mail-in service. The feature is not available on every phone, and a particular repair may still require steps set out by the service provider.
Google advises: “Before you send your device to repair services, remove the SIM card and keep it with you.” Follow the instructions for your repair order, including any directions about memory cards.

Repair mode versus factory reset

Neither option replaces following the provider’s specific instructions. Repair mode is a limited environment, not a promise that data will never be erased or that every diagnostic can be performed without broader access.
What to do before sending a phone for repair
- Read the terms for your exact repair. Check the current instructions and terms for your country and whether the service is walk-in or mail-in. Requirements and data-handling terms can differ.
- Back up important data. Save what you need somewhere separate from the phone, and confirm you can access the backup.
- Use Repair mode if supported and permitted. On eligible Pixels, follow Google’s current Repair mode instructions and the repair provider’s workflow.
- Remove cards as instructed. Google advises removing and keeping the SIM. Remove memory cards too where the provider’s instructions call for it.
- Do not provide an unlock code casually. Ask why it is needed and whether the test can be performed in Repair mode or another limited environment. Share access only if there is a clear, documented diagnostic need and you are comfortable proceeding.
- Assume data could be erased. Make sure your backup is complete before handing over the device, even if you plan to use Repair mode.
Google repair terms put data protection on the customer
Google’s U.S. in-store repair terms say customers are responsible for backing up data and deleting, encrypting, or otherwise protecting it from unauthorized use. The terms also say Google will not back up or restore customer data and that data, software, and programs may be erased during repairs. Read the terms attached to your own repair rather than assuming the U.S. in-store terms apply elsewhere.

Google’s Singapore mail-in terms are more explicit: they direct customers to remove SIM and memory cards, back up data elsewhere, and say all data, software, and programs may be completely and permanently erased before inspection and repair or replacement. That statement applies to the cited Singapore mail-in terms; it should not be treated as the universal process for every Google repair.

If intimate images are shared without your consent
If sexual images of you appear online, Google lets you or a representative request removal of qualifying sexual videos and images from Google Search. Google reviews the URLs submitted. Its Search Help makes the scope clear: “Google can only remove content from search results pages.” A removal from Search does not delete the image from the website hosting it, remove shared copies or links, or guarantee it cannot be found through another search engine or platform. Contacting the host site may also be necessary.

Do not circulate sensitive images unnecessarily while seeking help. Google specifically warns not to take or share screenshots containing sexual imagery of anyone under 18. In that situation, use the reporting and support channels described by Google and the relevant platform without forwarding or reproducing the imagery.
