To download companion audio for a LeapStart book, install LeapFrog Connect on a PC or Mac, touch an inside page of the book with the LeapStart stylus, then connect the player to the computer with its included USB cable. Follow the prompts in LeapFrog Connect and wait for the transfer to finish.
Install audio for a new LeapStart book

On a PC or Mac, download and install LeapFrog Connect for LeapStart, then open the application. If the installer will not run, consult the support page for current system requirements; the available instructions confirm PC and Mac support but do not specify current operating-system versions.

Turn on the LeapStart player. For every new activity book whose audio you want, touch the stylus to an inside page. LeapFrog says the player prompts you to connect it to download that book’s companion audio.

Connect the player to the computer using the included USB cable. Follow the LeapFrog Connect prompts. The software identifies the books you touched, then downloads and installs their audio; the player’s power light flashes green while content downloads.

When the download is complete, eject and disconnect the player. In the book, touch the stylus to a word or picture to play its audio.
The audio is installed on the player for use with the activity book; LeapFrog does not describe it as a separate file for general audio playback. LeapFrog’s installation FAQ, dated November 9, 2023, is titled “How do I install audio files on my LeapStart?”

If the computer does not recognize the player
Try LeapFrog’s basic connection checks first, then use its repair procedure only if needed. Its support instructions are subject to change, so consult the current support article before attempting Repair Mode.

Use the USB cable supplied with LeapStart. Some other cables provide power but do not transfer data.

Try a different USB port and restart the computer.
Use Repair Mode if the basic checks fail

Open LeapFrog Connect and attach the player to the computer.

While continuing to hold Volume Up, press and hold Power.

Release both buttons when the power light flashes red and amber.
If the computer still does not recognize the player, contact LeapFrog Support.

LeapFrog Support reported approximately 180 MB of available memory in a June 9, 2016 FAQ and estimated that an average of about twelve books’ audio could fit at once. This is an approximate manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed capacity: audio file sizes vary, so the number of books that fit depends on the selection.

LeapStart 3D book compatibility
LeapFrog says all available LeapStart books play audio on LeapStart 3D. Books with the 3D logo also provide animations on the LeapStart 3D player. That animation feature is specific to the 3D model; the compatibility guidance does not establish compatibility with every other LeapFrog system.
If new audio downloads are unavailable
LeapFrog’s service notice explains that a system outage can prevent initial setup and new audio downloads, while books whose audio is already installed remain playable. The notice does not establish that an outage is happening now. Check LeapFrog’s live support information if downloads fail despite correct setup; the notice’s recovery sequence is to open LeapFrog Connect, connect the player with the included USB cable, and follow the setup instructions.
