Before you download, check whether the editor fits your computer
Video editors can have different operating-system and hardware requirements, and those requirements can change between releases. Check the publisher’s current requirements for your specific Windows or Mac before downloading. Do not rely on an old version number or a system-requirements list copied to another site.

Use a legitimate download source
- Open the app store or publisher’s site directly. Microsoft recommends downloading apps from trusted sources such as Microsoft Store. For a desktop installer, use the editor publisher’s own website. Microsoft’s guidance is to install programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites (Microsoft’s online-install guidance).
- Check the web address. Make sure the browser is on the publisher’s genuine domain, not a lookalike page. A sponsored search result or third-party download portal is not proof that an installer is legitimate.
- Verify the download details. Confirm the editor’s name, publisher, operating system and edition on the download page before selecting a file.
- Keep protections active. Update your browser and operating system, and review any security warning before deciding what to do. Do not disable protections just to run an unfamiliar installer.
- Update through trusted routes. After installation, use the editor’s built-in updater or return to the publisher’s official site instead of following a random pop-up or third-party updater.
Downloading on Windows
Use Microsoft Store or the editor publisher’s official site. Windows 11 includes Smart App Control, and modern Windows versions include Microsoft Defender Antivirus; keep available protections and updates enabled. If SmartScreen, Defender or Windows warns about a file, pause and verify that you obtained the correct installer from the publisher before proceeding. Microsoft advises users to download apps from trusted sources and be thoughtful about what they install (Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software).
Antivirus scanning is one protective layer, not proof that a file is harmless. Microsoft notes that potentially unwanted apps may show unwanted ads, secretly use a PC for cryptocurrency mining or offer other unexpected apps. Treat an unexpected warning or bundled offer as a reason to stop and check the source rather than clicking through automatically.

Downloading on Mac
Prefer the Mac App Store or the editor publisher’s official website. For apps, plug-ins and installer packages obtained outside the App Store, macOS checks a Developer ID signature to verify that the software comes from an identified developer and has not been altered. On macOS Catalina and later, notarization is required by default: Apple checks for known malicious software, but notarization is not a guarantee that an app is risk-free (Apple’s explanation of safely opening apps on your Mac).
If macOS blocks an app, confirm the publisher and download it again from the official source. Do not bypass the warning for an installer whose source you cannot verify.

Example: find the publisher’s current installer
Blackmagic Design provides Windows and macOS options on its DaVinci Resolve download page. Choose your operating system there and check the live page for the current edition and system requirements; these details can change.
For Adobe apps, use Adobe’s official download and account routes. Adobe warns that unlicensed installation files have a high chance of containing malware or viruses (Adobe Genuine Software information). That warning is a reason to avoid cracked or repackaged installers, keygens and unexpected download managers—not a quantified estimate of risk for every unofficial file.

Warning signs that should make you stop
- The download comes from a crack, keygen, file mirror or repackaging site rather than the publisher.
- The page offers a “download manager” or unrelated software you did not request.
- The product name, publisher, operating system or edition does not match what you intended to install.
- Your security software or operating system warns about the file and you cannot verify its source with the publisher.
When in doubt, cancel the download, return to the publisher’s site by entering its verified address, and check the installer details there.
