Long-inactive Bitcoin balances matter because they may be unavailable to trade today yet could become accessible later. Their age can influence estimates of liquid supply and market expectations, but inactivity does not prove that coins are lost, and a transfer does not prove that they were sold.
What “inactive Bitcoin” actually means
Bitcoin’s blockchain records unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), not a definitive list of people’s wallets or holdings. A UTXO’s age measures time since it was created or last moved. It does not reveal whether its owner is holding deliberately, cannot access the relevant key, or has died.

It helps to separate four ideas:
- On-chain balance: Bitcoin remains recorded in the ledger. Bitcoin.org notes that lost coins remain on the blockchain, but cannot be spent without the private keys needed to control them (Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ).
- Inactivity: An output or address has not moved during a chosen period. This is observable, but says little by itself about the reason.
- Effective liquid supply: Coins their holders could plausibly offer for sale over a particular time horizon. This is an economic concept, not a protocol accounting category.
- Permanent loss: Coins that cannot be spent because the necessary keys are irretrievably unavailable. The blockchain does not generally identify such coins directly.
These categories overlap imperfectly. Coins whose keys are lost are practically unavailable; coins held by a patient investor are also unavailable to the market for as long as that holder chooses not to sell. Yet the reasons—and the possibility of future movement—are different.

Bitcoin’s issuance schedule determines how new coins enter circulation, while its supply cap concerns protocol issuance. Neither tells traders how much of the outstanding supply is likely to be offered for sale now. Dormant balances therefore matter to a separate question: how much supply may be accessible at a given time.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If old coins move, analysts may revise their view of whether a long-term holder is active or whether previously dormant supply could become available. That can affect expectations even before anyone knows what the holder intends. But a blockchain transfer is not itself a market order. A holder might consolidate UTXOs, reorganize custody, move coins between self-controlled addresses, or transfer them to an exchange. Only evidence about what happens next can establish a sale.
Any eventual market effect also depends on the amount actually offered, the time period over which it is sold, and prevailing market liquidity. The size of an old balance alone does not establish the size or direction of a price move.

What on-chain metrics can—and cannot—show
UTXO age and age cohorts
Age-cohort analysis groups UTXOs by how long they have remained unspent. It is useful for describing how much Bitcoin has not moved within a selected period. It cannot distinguish a lost key from deliberate long-term holding. A 2022 Scientific Data study reported approximately 2 million BTC in 5–10-year-old cohorts, 4.5 million BTC in 2–5-year-old cohorts, and 3 million BTC in 1–2-year-old cohorts—about 11.5 million BTC inactive for more than one year. Those measurements use blockchain data through February 2021 and are historical, not current dormant-supply figures (“Deciphering Bitcoin Blockchain Data by Cohort Analysis”).
Bitcoin-days-destroyed and average dormancy
Bitcoin-days-destroyed weights coins moved in a period by how long they had remained unmoved. Average dormancy uses related age-weighted movement concepts to describe turnover. These measures can indicate that older coins have moved; they do not identify the holder or establish intent to sell. See the 2018 Ledger paper on Bitcoin average dormancy.

Active-supply and lost-supply estimates
Some studies estimate active or lost supply by applying assumptions or statistical probabilities—for example, the likelihood that a coin will move after a long inactive period. Such estimates can help frame analysis, but they are model outputs, not direct observations of lost private keys. A 2024 study of active Bitcoin supply illustrates this kind of empirical estimation (Journal of Economics & Finance).
Addresses are not owners
An address is not necessarily a person, and one person or institution may control many addresses. A custodian may hold coins on behalf of many clients. Some user-level analyses therefore rely on clustering addresses, which introduces its own methodological choices. Research on Bitcoin transaction flows and holding-time patterns discusses these interpretive limits (Physica A, 2024). Treat labels such as “wallet,” “address,” and “owner” carefully: they are not interchangeable units.

How to interpret a large old balance that moves
- Check the unit and the age definition. Determine whether the claim concerns an address, UTXOs, or an inferred wallet, and how long “inactive” means.
- Look for custody context. A transfer may be routine management by an owner or custodian rather than a decision to sell.
- Separate movement from market activity. A transaction establishes that coins moved on-chain. It does not establish that they reached an exchange or were sold.
- Ask what evidence supports any supply estimate. Check the data date, treatment of custodial balances, historical window, and whether “lost” is directly known or statistically inferred.
- Keep price claims conditional. Potential market impact depends on whether coins are offered for sale, the pace of any sale, and liquidity at the time.
What a modeled price-impact estimate means
A 2026 paper in Ledger modeled hypothetical, patient multi-year sales of Bitcoin attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto. Under that paper’s assumptions, the scenarios produced a cumulative price impact centered around 10–13% relative to a no-sale case (“The Satoshi Overhang: Why the Bear Case is Bounded”). This is a scenario result, not a prediction that those coins will move, a verified account of who controls them, or a general rule for the price impact of dormant Bitcoin.

Other published figures also require careful attribution. Henley & Partners’ 2026 methodology page repeats estimates of 2.3–4 million permanently lost BTC and 39,069 long-dormant addresses holding 3.8 million BTC, attributing them to external sources and methods (methodology page). These are estimates, not verified counts of coins with provably inaccessible keys; the address count should not be read as a count of owners.

Why the distinction matters
Dormant Bitcoin can be economically significant without being a reliable forecast signal. A balance may remain in protocol supply while being practically unavailable, and a long period without movement cannot tell observers whether that state is permanent. When coins do move, the transaction updates what is known about their activity—not, on its own, their destination, sale status, or effect on price.
