To survive longer in Slaughter Mode, make the Ripatorium a controlled practice arena: start with a short encounter, give yourself a more forgiving Parry Window and higher Resource Values, then raise enemy pressure or add waves one change at a time. The Ripatorium’s settings can shape a repeatable challenge, but Bethesda has not named a universally best build, arena layout, or demon order.
How to set up a more survivable Ripatorium run
Slaughter Mode is played through the Ripatorium, where you can customize arena encounters. Tune the settings to the skill you want to practice rather than treating one preset as right for everyone.

- For fundamentals: Increase the Parry Window, reduce player damage or enemy aggression, and raise Resource Values. The first makes parrying more forgiving; the latter settings reduce pressure and give more resources from pickups. These tradeoffs make it easier to focus on timing and awareness, but they do not measure performance under tougher conditions. Bethesda explains the modifiers in its Custom Gameplay Modifiers guide.
- For a demanding benchmark: Keep more punishing modifiers and use a time limit or Endless mode for a repeatable test. A tough setting is useful only if you can compare runs under the same conditions.
- For an intermediate challenge: Change just one setting after a run. If you simultaneously increase damage, aggression, and wave count, it is harder to tell which change caused a shorter run.
Bethesda’s modifier guide describes what these controls do, not an optimal Slaughter Mode preset. Choose settings according to whether you want to learn, build consistency, or test yourself.
Build difficulty in manageable steps
Start with a short, repeatable encounter
Update 2 added demon selection, a time limit or Endless option, and respawn controls. Update 3 expanded the structure to as many as five rounds, with up to ten respawn waves per round. Begin with fewer rounds and waves, then increase them after you can handle the current setup reliably. Those limits are documented in Bethesda’s Update 2 notes and Update 3 notes.

Choose an encounter preset for pressure, not as a promise of balance
Update 3 lists Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic encounter presets, which can be combined with any difficulty level. Treat them as ways to scale the pressure. The notes do not establish that one preset is the best for longer survival or that a particular enemy sequence is optimal.
Use blockers to practice breaking exposure
Update 3 added line-of-sight blockers to arenas. As a practical tactic, use cover to interrupt exposure when the layout and demon mix make it useful, then move deliberately rather than staying exposed while looking for an opening. The benefit depends on the arena and encounter; blockers are not a guaranteed safe route.

Choose pickups and Berserk settings for the skill you want
Pickup rules let you isolate resource management from combat pressure. Update 4 also added more control over Berserk availability and continuous respawn behavior. Use the options as drills:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Single-use pickups: Practice choosing when to collect resources and managing what you take.
- No pickups: Test avoidance and resource discipline without relying on arena pickups.
- Five-minute pickup respawns: Support a longer endurance drill with resources returning on a fixed timer.
- Berserk: Set it to disabled, one use, a five-minute respawn, or unlimited, depending on whether the drill is about conserving it or practicing with it.
- Continuous spawn mode: In Update 4, this option makes demons respawn continuously within rounds instead of requiring the existing enemies in a wave to be fully eliminated first. Use it when you want uninterrupted pressure rather than a pause between cleared waves.
Update 4 also documents BFC ammo controls. Check the Ripatorium options in your current game version to see the available settings and configure a resource drill around them. The mechanics and options above are listed in the Revelations Update 4 notes.

Adjust defensive forgiveness without confusing it with skill
The Parry Window changes how forgiving parry timing is. Bethesda describes it as adjusting “the moment of opportunity where players can reflect attacks capable of being parried.” A higher value can help you learn the rhythm of parryable attacks; lowering it later gives you a stricter timing test. Brink of Death support is another adjustable practice variable documented in Update 3. Use it if available in your setup, but do not treat extra forgiveness as evidence that a harder encounter has become easier in every other respect.

Life Sigils are described by Bethesda as extra lives after death without reloading a checkpoint, and the player can hold only a limited number. The publisher’s exploration guidance does not state that Ripatorium rounds supply Sigils or give a numeric carrying limit, so do not build an arena plan around finding one.
Rank #4
Bethesda’s advice to check the AutoMap for caches and secrets, and its descriptions of Shield Saw Charge and Throw interactions with objects and gates, concern exploration. They are useful campaign context, not confirmed Slaughter Mode survival mechanics. The same exploration article explains Sigils and those navigation tools: Exploring Maps in DOOM: The Dark Ages.

A difficulty problem is different from a progression blocker. If you cannot progress in the campaign, Bethesda Support recommends searching the area thoroughly, trying run-and-jump traversal or climbable walls, and using Restart Map From Checkpoint or Restart Map From Beginning if needed. That support advice addresses getting unstuck, not normal Slaughter Mode difficulty: Bethesda Support’s progression troubleshooting.
Choose a setup by the kind of run you want
| Goal | Useful settings | What the setup practices |
|---|---|---|
| Learn combat fundamentals | Higher Parry Window, lower player damage or enemy aggression, higher Resource Values; short encounter | Parry timing and basic awareness with less punishment |
| Practice resource discipline | No pickups or single-use pickups; adjust Berserk availability | Avoidance, pickup decisions, and restraint with limited resources |
| Build endurance | Endless or a time limit; respawning pickups on the five-minute timer; add rounds or waves gradually | Sustained performance and resource use over a longer drill |
| Test a demanding run | More aggressive modifiers, a harder encounter preset, greater wave pressure, and a consistent demon mix | Repeatable performance under tougher conditions |
The table is a practice framework, not a publisher-endorsed ranking. If you want to compare attempts, keep the arena, demon selection, and settings consistent while changing one pressure variable at a time.
What to know about current Ripatorium options
Bethesda’s July 7, 2026 Update 4 notes document Ripatorium 3.0 and describe additional Ripatorium content in Revelations as unlocking after completion of the Master Arenas. Bethesda lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, and Battle.net on its official game page. Available options can depend on game updates and progression, so check the live Revelations availability information and in-game settings for your platform.
