Check the install drive and system configuration
Bethesda specifies NVMe storage, so confirm the game is installed on an NVMe SSD. That is a requirements check, not a promise that changing drives will fix every stutter. On a laptop, make sure the game is using the discrete or primary GPU, connect the charger when appropriate, and choose a performance-oriented power profile.

Bethesda notes that “Most issues related to game performance can be attributed to hardware.” If the system meets the requirements but performance is still poor, work through these checks before making many graphics changes at once:
- Verify the PC meets the published requirements and that the game is installed on NVMe storage.
- Enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows, if available.
- Close unnecessary background applications and disable overlays that may be running over the game.
- Install the current graphics driver for your GPU.
- In the game’s Graphics menu, lower the overall graphics quality and retest.
- Verify the game files through the launcher or store where you installed it.
- Confirm the game is assigned to the primary GPU and that the system is using a performance power mode.

How do I benchmark DOOM: The Dark Ages settings?
Use the same benchmark route and resolution for each comparison, and change one video setting at a time. The game’s PC Benchmark Mode follows a consistent, nearly deterministic route and displays FPS alongside total, CPU, and GPU frame-time graphs. It gives you a repeatable way to compare your own system rather than relying on a preset that may not fit your hardware.

- From the main menu, open Extras, then select Benchmark Mode.
- Run the benchmark without changing settings and note the FPS and total, CPU, and GPU frame-time results.
- Change one video setting, keeping the resolution and benchmark route the same.
- Run the benchmark again and compare the readings as well as image quality.
- Keep a change only if it improves the result you care about without making image quality or stability unacceptable.
GPU frame time can help show when graphics work is the limiting factor; CPU frame time provides a different clue. Treat the benchmark as a comparison tool for your PC, not a promise about performance in every combat situation. The feature was described in Bethesda and id Software’s June 18, 2025 PC update notes.

When should I use dynamic resolution or upscaling?
On PC, the July 7, 2026 Update 4.0 notes say DLSS, FSR, and XeSS support dynamic resolution scaling. These are GPU-dependent options, so availability and behavior depend on the hardware and feature support; they are not universal settings for every PC. DLSS 4.5 adds 5x and 6x Frame Generation modes on compatible GPUs. Check which options your system actually exposes, then compare them with the same Benchmark Mode route and resolution.

What does Slaughter Mode mean in DOOM: The Dark Ages?
“Slaughter Mode” is not the name used in the official notes for the customizable arena; Bethesda and id Software call it the Ripatorium. Update 3 introduced Ripatorium 2.0, with up to five customized rounds, up to 10 respawn waves per round, time-limit controls, and Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic presets. Update 4.0 added Ripatorium 3.0 options, including continuous enemy spawning and additional controls for health, ammo, and Berserk pickups.
These options shape the combat challenge. Official notes do not quantify how enemy population, respawn waves, or continuous spawning affect frame rate, so they should not be treated as established PC performance optimizations.
