If Don’t Starve Together (DST) mods are not working, the cause is usually one of four things: the mod was never downloaded correctly, it is enabled in the wrong scope, its local files are damaged, or a dedicated server cannot initialize it. Work through the checks in order: confirm Workshop visibility, identify whether the mod is client-side or server-side, perform a clean reset, then bring up a dedicated server with no mods and add them back gradually.

The same mod can work in a hosted game yet fail on a dedicated server because those environments load configuration differently. The steps below separate client, hosted-world and multi-shard server problems so you can test one variable at a time.

What “mods not working” can mean
A mod can fail at several distinct points, and each point produces a different symptom:
- Not installed: the Workshop subscription exists, but DST never downloaded or registered the files.
- Installed but not enabled: the mod appears in the Mods menu but is not selected for the current world or player.
- Wrong scope: a client mod is being expected to change the server world, or a server/world mod is being enabled only for one player.
- Corrupted or blocked files: an incomplete download, security restriction or damaged local copy prevents the game from reading the mod.
- Server initialization failure: a dedicated server stops during startup when one enabled mod is incompatible or incorrectly configured.
- Shard mismatch: Master and Caves worlds in a cluster do not use the same intended mod set or compatible settings.
Diagnose the earliest failure you can reproduce. If the mod is absent from the in-game list, do not edit world configuration yet; fix subscription and download visibility first. If a dedicated server will not start, disable every server mod before investigating individual settings.

Install and enable a mod in the correct place
Subscribe and verify visibility
- Open DST’s Workshop page in Steam and subscribe to the mod.
- Wait for Steam to finish any queued download. A subscription alone does not prove that the files are present.
- Launch DST and open the Mods menu. The mod should appear there by name.
- If it is missing, check Steam’s download status, restart Steam, launch DST again and recheck the menu before deleting files.
Klei’s installation guidance places subscription, in-game visibility and activation in that order. The installation article also cautions: “All mods are to be used at your own risk!” Individual Workshop authors can change a mod without notice, so read the mod’s current compatibility notes after it becomes visible.
Enable a mod for a hosted world
When you host from the normal game client, create or edit the world and open Host Game → Create New World → Mods. Server or world mods are selected in that screen and affect the world every connected player enters. A client mod is selected from the client-mod list and changes only the player who enabled it.

A client-only interface, map or convenience mod will not automatically alter world simulation. Conversely, a world-generation or gameplay mod cannot be made server-wide by enabling it only in your personal client list.
Understand the two scopes

Some mods include both client and server components. Follow the author’s instructions for that specific Workshop item and enable each required part in its proper list. Do not assume that a mod’s name or icon tells you which side it needs.

Run a clean reset when a download is damaged
A clean reset removes the local copy and the Workshop subscription, rather than repeatedly toggling a possibly incomplete installation. Use it for a mod that is visible but errors, shows stale behavior after an update, or causes the same failure after ordinary restarts.
- Disable the suspected mod in every place where it is enabled: your client list, hosted-world settings and any dedicated-server configuration.
- Close DST and Steam so files are not in use.
- Delete DST’s local
modsfiles. Remove only the mod files you intend to reset if you want to preserve unrelated installations; a full removal is appropriate when several entries are corrupted. - Unsubscribe from the corresponding Workshop items. This allows Steam to remove the associated Workshop content instead of leaving an old copy behind.
- Restart Steam and subscribe to one known-good mod.
- Launch DST, confirm that the single mod appears in the Mods menu, enable it in the correct scope and test a new or disposable world.
- Restore additional mods one at a time, testing after each addition.
Testing one item first is important: reinstalling a whole collection at once makes it impossible to tell which download or update reintroduced the problem.
Fix entries displayed as workshop-xxxxxxx
An entry rendered as workshop-xxxxxxx is generally a file-access or registration symptom, not a useful mod name. Klei links this display to missing Windows administrator permissions needed for Steam and DST to read and write the game’s files.
Check Windows access
- Run Steam and DST under the same Windows account, with administrator-level access available to that account.
- Confirm that the account can read and write the drive and folder where Steam and DST are installed.
- Check security software logs for a blocked Steam or DST executable. If a block is recorded, create an allow rule only through that product’s documented procedure and only for the files you trust.
- Restart Steam after changing permissions, then let the Workshop item download again.
Do not rename workshop-xxxxxxx folders by hand or substitute a guessed title. The numeric identifier is generated by Workshop; repairing access and redownloading is safer than manually editing its contents. If the identifier remains after a clean reset, treat it as an unresolved access problem and check the security software again.

Dedicated server will not start with mods enabled
First establish a vanilla baseline
- Disable all server mods in the dedicated server’s configuration.
- Start the server with the same cluster and shard settings, but with no mods loaded.
- If the unmodded server starts, stop it cleanly and add one mod, or one small group of known-compatible mods.
- Restart after each addition. Record which change immediately precedes a failure.
- Remove the last-added mod and confirm that the server starts again. That isolates the likely offender without guessing.
Klei specifically recommends a no-mod startup test because one enabled mod can prevent initialization. If the server still fails with every mod disabled, the mod set is not the immediate cause. Collect client_log.txt and report the persistent issue through Klei’s bug tracker, including what changed and whether the vanilla baseline starts.
Read the failure pattern

Use the log to document the reproducible sequence rather than deleting it and trying random combinations. A useful report states the game and server setup, the exact mod added before failure, whether the vanilla server starts, and the relevant log file.
Configure dedicated servers and clusters correctly
Install the intended Workshop set
Dedicated-server documentation uses dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua to describe the Workshop mods a server should install. Keep this installation list deliberate: include only the items the cluster actually needs, remove retired IDs, and make sure the server account can write the downloaded files.
Installation and activation are separate. A mod listed in dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua can be downloaded without being enabled for a particular world. World activation is controlled in each world’s modoverrides.lua configuration. After changing either file, restart the affected server process and verify the startup result.

Keep Master and Caves shards aligned
For a cluster containing Master and Caves shards, use the same intended server-mod set on both shards unless the mod’s documentation explicitly says otherwise. Apply compatible configuration values to each shard’s modoverrides.lua; a setting copied from one world may not make sense in another.
- Compare the enabled mod IDs on Master and Caves.
- Compare configuration keys and values, including any world-specific options.
- Restart both shards after coordinated edits rather than changing one while the other is running an older set.
- If only one shard fails, test that shard alone with all mods disabled, then reintroduce the shared set incrementally.
A cluster can appear partly healthy while still failing transfers or generating inconsistent behavior when shards disagree. Alignment is therefore a configuration check, not merely a download check.

A normal hosted game loads settings through the client’s world-creation screen. A dedicated server reads its own installation and world configuration files. Success in one environment proves only that the mod can run in that environment; it does not prove that the server has installed the same Workshop item, enabled it for the active world, or supplied compatible settings.
- Confirm the server downloaded the mod named in
dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua. - Confirm the mod is enabled in the active world’s
modoverrides.lua, not only in your personal client list. - Check whether the mod requires a client component for every player.
- Start the server with that mod alone, without the rest of the collection.
- Join with a client that has subscribed to any required client-side component and compare the result with the hosted test.
If the feature still differs, capture the server’s startup log and the client’s client_log.txt from the same test. Comparing one controlled hosted world and one controlled dedicated world is more informative than changing several files at once.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
The mod is not listed in the Mods menu
Check Steam’s download queue, restart Steam, and launch DST again. If it remains absent, unsubscribe, remove the local mods files for that item, resubscribe and test a single known-good Workshop entry. Do not edit world settings until the item is visible in-game.
The mod is listed but does nothing
Identify its scope. Enable a client mod in the client list or a server/world mod from the host’s world settings. For dedicated servers, verify both the installation list and the active world’s modoverrides.lua.

The feature is probably client-scoped, or required client components are missing on other machines. Each affected player must subscribe to and enable the client component; a host-side setting cannot force a client-only interface change for everyone.
The server crashes or hangs during initialization
Disable every server mod and establish a vanilla start. Re-enable one mod at a time, keeping a note of the first addition that reproduces the failure. Leave the offending item disabled while checking its current compatibility notes and reporting persistent errors with client_log.txt.
Workshop names remain numeric after reinstalling
Recheck Windows permissions and security-software blocks. Steam and DST must be able to read and write their installation and Workshop locations. A second unsubscribe/resubscribe cycle will not fix a permissions block by itself.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Can Steam show the Workshop subscription as downloaded?
- Does the item appear by name in DST’s Mods menu?
- Is it marked as a client mod or a server/world mod by its instructions?
- Is it enabled in the exact context being tested?
- Have you tested the item alone after a clean reset?
- Does a dedicated server start with every mod disabled?
- Are Master and Caves using the intended matching set and compatible configuration?
- Have you preserved
client_log.txtfor a failure that remains after the vanilla test?
Record each change and its result. A short timeline—subscription, download, scope, configuration edit, startup result—prevents cycling through the same fixes and gives Klei or the mod author actionable evidence.

Report the issue when the mod is correctly subscribed, visible, enabled in the proper scope, and still fails after a clean reinstall, or when a dedicated server fails even with all mods disabled. Include the mod’s Workshop name or ID, whether the failure occurs on a hosted game or dedicated server, the shard involved, the exact step that triggers it, and client_log.txt. Keep the failing configuration available until the report is submitted; deleting it can remove the evidence needed to identify the cause.
