| Mode | What happens when players die | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | The normal, teamwork-heavy mode. A 120-second countdown begins only after every player is dead. If no ghost is revived during that window, the world ends and a new one is generated. Restarting the server resets the countdown. | Groups that want the full challenge and are ready to plan revives. |
| Endless | The world continues even when every player is a ghost. | Learning maps, recipes and combat without risking a complete reset. |
| Wilderness | A dead player respawns at a random location rather than appearing as a ghost. | Casual sessions in which players want to keep moving instead of managing ghost revivals. |
Community guides often recommend Relaxed or Endless for a first run because they reduce the pressure while everyone learns. You can switch to Survival once the group understands food, sanity, seasonal preparation and reviving.

Pick a character that fits your group
Wilson is the most neutral starting point: he has no unusual requirement that forces a new player to learn a special play style. That makes him a useful baseline while you learn gathering, crafting and combat.
Wendy is another approachable option because her ghostly twin can make early combat more forgiving. She is especially useful when a new group is nervous about dealing with hostile creatures.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGuides do not agree on one universally easiest character. Some identify Wigfrid, while others point to Willow or Wendy. Treat that disagreement as a reminder to choose for your team’s needs rather than chasing a single “best beginner” answer. A player who understands a character’s restrictions and strengths will usually contribute more than someone who picked a supposedly easy character without reading the basics.
| Choice | Why beginners may like it | What to discuss first |
|---|---|---|
| Wilson | Flexible, straightforward starting point. | Use him to learn the shared fundamentals. |
| Wendy | Her ghostly companion can reduce the danger of early fights. | Coordinate with the group so her combat advantage complements, rather than replaces, normal preparation. |
| Wigfrid, Willow or another specialist | May suit a player who already understands the relevant mechanics. | Read the character description and explain any food, combat or sanity implications to teammates. |
What to do during the first days
Your first priority is not a permanent base. It is collecting enough materials and information that the whole team can make informed decisions.
- Gather the essentials. Collect flint, twigs, grass and logs as you explore. These materials unlock basic tools, torches and early crafting.
- Take food while you travel. Berries and carrots are safer early choices than picking fights for meat. Keep everyone fed while the map is still unfamiliar.
- Map useful landmarks. Note rocks, gold, food sources, beefalo, pigs and paths between biomes. Tell the group where you found each resource instead of leaving discoveries on one player’s screen.
- Delay a permanent camp until you have a foundation. Build after the team has located materials such as rocks and gold, not simply because the first night is approaching.
- Make night safety a shared responsibility. Before darkness, confirm that every player has a light source and knows where the group is meeting. A separated player can die without the others realizing it.
- Set a temporary rally point. Even if you are still exploring, agree on a place to regroup and deposit surplus materials. This prevents four players from wandering in four directions with no supplies at camp.
Avoid early fights unless the group has a clear reason and an escape route. Combat consumes health, hunger and time; learning the map first gives you more options when a dangerous season or creature arrives.

Place the base for safety and logistics
When you are ready to settle, choose a location that shortens routine travel and gives the team a chance to recover. Guides commonly suggest building near beefalo or pigs because those creatures can provide protection, but do not place every important structure where a hostile event could reach it. Leave room for storage, cooking and expansion so the camp does not become a maze of overlapping objects.

- Keep essential supplies together. Store food ingredients, fuel and emergency materials where any player can reach them.
- Create a visible return route. Mark the camp’s approach with landmarks so explorers can find it after a long trip.
- Separate risky activity from the center. Leave space between the main storage area and places where combat or dangerous creatures may occur.
- Build for the whole team. A camp designed for one player becomes frustrating when three others need to cook, sort supplies or craft at the same time.
Divide co-op jobs without creating silos
Small groups work better when responsibilities are clear but information remains shared. One practical arrangement is a builder, a farmer and an explorer. Rotate jobs when someone wants to learn another part of the game.
The builder
The builder gathers construction materials, places shared stations and keeps the camp organized. They should announce what is missing before spending rare resources so the explorer does not return to find the group has used everything on an unnecessary upgrade.
The farmer and cook
This player maintains food production, turns ingredients into reliable meals and monitors the reserve. Food storage is a group resource, not a personal stash. A teammate who eats the winter reserve before winter arrives can put everyone at risk, so label or verbally announce emergency supplies.
The explorer and scout
The explorer maps nearby regions, finds rocks and gold, checks for useful herds or villages and reports hazards. Exploration should be deliberate: carry enough food and light, tell the group where you are going, and return before the team’s supplies become tight.

The shared rule
Jobs are not permission to ignore the rest of the team. The farmer should call out a shortage, the builder should report structural changes, and the explorer should share discoveries immediately. A two-minute update at the start of a session prevents many emergencies.
Cook early and protect sanity
Crock Pots are efficient because prepared recipes can restore more than one need at once. Several recipes restore both hunger and sanity, and learning four or five dependable recipes covers much of a beginner group’s routine cooking. Start practicing before the first major seasonal crisis rather than waiting until raw ingredients are scarce.
- Keep a small emergency food reserve separate from everyday meals.
- Agree which ingredients are safe to use and which are reserved for a specific recipe.
- Cook surplus ingredients when the group is already near camp; this reduces the chance that one player eats the raw items another player needed.
- Tell the group when food is running low, rather than silently changing your own route to search for more.
Sanity is a team concern. One guide places the point at which shadow creatures begin appearing below 15 percent sanity. Once a player is near that level, stop treating the problem as cosmetic: shadow creatures can turn a food shortage or a night journey into a death spiral. Use food and other known sanity-restoring options, return to camp, and avoid unnecessary fights until the player is stable.
Ghosts also affect living teammates. One community-wiki figure reports a drain of about 3.3 sanity points per minute for each ghost, while another guide gives a broader estimate of 3.3 to 10 points per minute depending on circumstances. Because these numbers are patch-dependent and the sources differ, use them as warnings rather than a precision schedule. Revive ghosts promptly and do not leave a dead teammate unattended while the rest of the group is already near a sanity crisis.

Winter exposes every weakness in a new camp: food may be harder to replace, travel becomes less forgiving, and a player who has not planned clothing, warmth or emergency supplies can force the entire group to abandon its routine.

- Set a reserve target. Decide how much prepared food the group will keep untouched for winter and identify the containers or chests holding it.
- Fill the reserve gradually. Do not attempt to gather everything at the last moment. Each expedition should add food, fuel or another seasonal necessity.
- Protect the reserve from casual eating. Tell everyone which supplies are emergency-only and replace anything taken.
- Finish essential camp work early. A winter emergency is the wrong time to discover that the base lacks storage, light or a reliable cooking setup.
- Use short, planned expeditions. Assign a destination and a return time so the camp is not left without its most experienced player when conditions worsen.
The exact length and intensity of seasons can vary with world settings and patches, so use the first season to learn your world rather than relying on a memorized calendar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know every revival option before someone dies
A death is manageable only if the team has already decided how to respond. A ghost can revive at a Touch Stone, Meat Effigy or Life Giving Amulet. Living players can also revive a teammate with a Telltale Heart.
Self-revival
When a ghost has access to a Touch Stone, Meat Effigy or Life Giving Amulet, that player can activate the available option without waiting for another teammate. Mark the locations of Touch Stones and tell everyone who is carrying an amulet or has the materials needed for an effigy.
Team revival with a Telltale Heart
A living teammate can create and use a Telltale Heart to bring back a ghost. The reviver pays a health cost, so do not treat this as free healing. Check the reviver’s condition first and move to a safe place before starting the process.
What the revived player should expect
According to community guides, a revived character returns with 50 health, hunger at two-thirds of maximum and sanity at half of maximum. The player is alive but vulnerable, so bring food, stay near camp and avoid immediate combat. A group that revives someone and then sends them straight back into danger can lose the same player again.

One guide warns that a group without a revival plan can effectively lose a player permanently by around day 30. The precise timing depends on the world and the team, but the lesson is stable: establish the plan during the first session, not after the first fatal mistake.
Coordinate deaths and total wipes
In Survival, the dangerous moment is not one player becoming a ghost; it is every player becoming a ghost. The 120-second total-wipe window begins only after the last living player dies. During that period, the team must identify a revival route, reach the relevant object or prepare a Telltale Heart. If the window expires without a revival, the world ends. Restarting the server resets the timer, which does not make a failed recovery safe to ignore.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a simple death protocol:
- The dead player announces the location and confirms whether a self-revival option is available.
- The nearest living player stops unnecessary tasks and checks the group’s health, sanity and food.
- The team chooses the safest revival method rather than the fastest-looking one.
- After revival, escort the returning player to food and safety before resuming exploration.
If your group dislikes this pressure, Endless or Wilderness removes the specific total-wipe problem in different ways. That is a mode preference, not a failure to play correctly.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Better habit |
|---|---|---|
| Building immediately at the first convenient spot | The camp may be far from rocks, gold, food or protection. | Explore and gather a foundation before committing. |
| Fighting every creature encountered | Early damage and lost time create food and sanity problems. | Run, observe and return with a reason to fight. |
| Keeping all supplies on one player | One death can remove the team’s food or tools. | Distribute essential items and maintain shared storage. |
| Eating the winter reserve | The group reaches the hardest season without a buffer. | Mark emergency food and replace anything taken. |
| Ignoring a ghost | Living players lose sanity while the dead player remains unrecovered. | Start the revival procedure immediately when safe. |
| Sending a revived player out alone | Reduced health, hunger and sanity make a second death likely. | Feed, shelter and escort them until they recover. |
| Assuming an exact number is permanent | Patch changes and conflicting guides can make memorized values wrong. | Verify timers, penalties and thresholds against the current game version. |
A practical first-session checklist
- Choose Survival only if everyone accepts the total-wipe risk; otherwise start in Endless, Relaxed or Wilderness.
- Pick characters after discussing what each player wants to do.
- Gather flint, twigs, grass and logs before building a permanent camp.
- Locate rocks and gold, then choose a base with useful nearby protection.
- Assign builder, farmer/cook and explorer responsibilities.
- Learn four or five dependable Crock Pot recipes.
- Set aside food and materials that nobody may consume casually.
- Identify Touch Stones and discuss Meat Effigies, Life Giving Amulets and Telltale Hearts.
- Watch sanity, especially when ghosts are present, and respond before shadow creatures appear.
- Begin winter preparation early and communicate every shortage.
The strongest co-op advantage is not a particular character or a perfect base location. It is a group that shares information, protects its reserves and treats revival as a planned system rather than an improvisation.
