Core Keeper Skills Guide: What to Level First in Multiplayer

Core Keeper has activity-based skills rather than spendable skill points. This multiplayer guide shows when to prioritize Mining, Melee Combat, Vitality or Explosives, with version caveats and role-based team plans.

There is no single multiplayer skill order in Core Keeper. Skills increase when you perform their associated activity, not when you spend a pool of skill points. In a team, start with Mining if the group is exploring and building routes, or with Melee Combat and Vitality if the group is preparing for fights. Assign the other skills according to each player’s job, and treat Explosives as a specialized post-1.1.0.1 option rather than a universal first choice.

What to level first in a multiplayer world

The practical answer depends on what your party is missing. A team that cannot reach new areas benefits immediately from a player who mines constantly. A team spending its time clearing enemies benefits from players using melee attacks and defeating enemies. Because Core Keeper has activity-based progression, the best “first skill” is usually the skill attached to the work you already need done.

Team situation First priority Why How it gains experience
Opening tunnels, gathering ore and expanding the base Mining It improves the character doing the excavation and supports the whole party’s movement and resource supply. Damage walls while mining.
Clearing ordinary enemies with a close-range build Melee Combat It follows the actions a melee player is already taking. Land melee hits.
Front-line fighting and repeated enemy encounters Vitality It rewards defeating enemies and suits a player who spends substantial time in combat. Defeat enemies.
A deliberate explosives-focused build after the 1.1.0.1 update Explosives It is a niche specialization that can be trained quickly in a version-specific Steam guide’s boss-fight method. Use the activities that award Explosives experience in your current version.
Fishing, cooking or farming support The matching support skill These can be useful to a self-sufficient base, but the available guidance does not establish a universal order. Perform the corresponding activity.

For most new groups, a simple split works well: one player mines during every expedition, one player keeps fighting with the weapon type they intend to use, and the remaining players cover whichever task the base or current objective requires. This is a recommendation for coordinating effort, not an officially verified multiplayer progression path; no source establishes that one order is optimal for every party.

How Core Keeper skill progression works

You level by doing the task

Core Keeper does not use a conventional level-up screen where you receive skill points and distribute them manually. Each skill rises through the activity associated with it. Mining experience comes from damaging walls, Melee Combat experience comes from landing melee hits, and Vitality experience comes from defeating enemies. The same principle is the safest way to approach less documented skills: perform the activity represented by the skill instead of waiting for a separate point-allocation menu.

What this means for a shared world

Progress belongs to the character performing the action. If one player mines every tunnel, that player is the one practicing Mining. If another player handles most kills, that player is the one practicing combat-related progression. Rotate jobs when you want several characters to develop the same skill; do not assume that standing nearby transfers the relevant experience.

Activity-based progression also makes “level first” a planning question rather than a respec question. You can change what you do in the next expedition, but you cannot instantly turn a miner into a combat specialist by moving saved points. Agree on roles before a trip so the actions that advance each character also move the team toward its objective.

Mining: the strongest opening priority for explorers

Why miners matter in multiplayer

Mining is the clearest first priority for a party whose immediate goal is exploration. It opens routes, exposes resources and lets the group reach places that a combat-only approach cannot access efficiently. One guide reports that Mining reaches level 100 and then provides +100 mining damage. That figure is attached to the guide’s level-100 description; it is not a claim that every version or every mining setup reaches the same result.

How to train it without wasting a trip

  1. Give one player responsibility for opening the route rather than having every player mine the same wall.
  2. Have that player damage walls consistently while the rest of the group handles threats, collects exposed resources or marks branches to explore.
  3. Keep the miner working during return trips and base expansion if the party still needs tunnels; the skill advances through the action itself.
  4. Switch the mining role when another character needs Mining experience, but do it deliberately so a resource-critical expedition does not lose its only dedicated excavator.

Mining should usually come first for a new multiplayer world because it helps the entire group even when only one character receives the experience. It is less urgent when the team already has safe routes and is repeatedly failing fights; in that case, combat activity may produce a larger immediate benefit.

Melee Combat and Vitality: the combat pair to build early

Melee Combat

Melee Combat gains experience when you land melee hits. A player who has chosen a close-range role should therefore use that role consistently during ordinary encounters instead of avoiding all contact while waiting for a special training opportunity. The available guide advice points combat-oriented players toward Melee Combat as an early priority.

In a party, designate one or more players to make the hits while another player supports, controls space or handles logistics. This keeps the melee character’s activity aligned with the skill they want to develop. It also prevents a common coordination mistake: everyone changing weapons or roles from fight to fight and leaving no character with a clear progression path.

Vitality

Vitality gains experience from defeating enemies. It therefore complements a player who is regularly responsible for finishing encounters, whether that player is the dedicated front-liner or the party member who clears enemies while the miner works. The guide advice groups Vitality with Melee Combat for combat-focused progression, but the two skills are trained by different events: landing hits for Melee Combat and defeating enemies for Vitality.

That distinction matters when you divide a fight. A player can land many hits without receiving the same Vitality progress as the character that secures defeats, while a player who finishes enemies may gain Vitality without making every melee attack. If your party wants both skills on one character, let that character participate throughout the encounter rather than assigning all finishing blows or all opening attacks to someone else.

Choosing between the two first

Your combat job Start with Reason
You stay close and make repeated weapon attacks Melee Combat Your normal attacks directly generate its experience.
You are the party’s primary enemy clearer Vitality Defeats are the qualifying action.
You do both jobs Train both naturally Do not force an artificial order; use melee attacks and take responsibility for some defeats.
You mainly mine or provide noncombat support Mining or your support activity Let the combat specialist develop the combat skills while you perform your assigned work.

Explosives: useful specialization, not a universal first skill

When the skill exists

The Explosives tree was added in version 1.1.0.1 on March 10, 2025. It was not part of the 1.0 release. If you are reading an older guide or playing an older installation, advice about Explosives may not apply to your world.

Why its priority is situational

A Steam guide written for the 1.1.0-era game claims that Explosives can reach level 100 in under an hour through boss fights. That is a version-specific player guide, not a universal performance guarantee. The claim does not establish that the same timing works with every character, party, difficulty, equipment setup or later patch.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

For that reason, Explosives makes sense as a planned specialization when your party already has a miner and reliable combat coverage, or when a player specifically wants an explosives-centered build. It is a poor default for a first-hour multiplayer order if the group still lacks access routes or basic combat capacity.

A safe way to decide

  • Confirm that every participant is on a version containing the Explosives tree.
  • Choose one player to specialize rather than having the whole party abandon Mining and ordinary combat.
  • Use the current in-game descriptions and patch notes to verify which actions award experience.
  • Treat any “under an hour” route as an optional technique whose result may vary, not as a promised leveling time.

Magic, Summoning and the changing skill roster

The game’s skill total is not consistently reported. One guide describes nine skills in Early Access and says the total later reached 12 with Magic, Summoning and Explosives, with skills capped at level 100. Other material does not present the same count with the same confidence. The safest conclusion is that the roster and count depend on the version being discussed, and that older lists should not be used as a definitive current catalogue.

Core Keeper’s 1.0 full release occurred on August 27, 2024 and added mage and warlock playstyles. That release timing explains why guides written before 1.0 may omit Magic or Summoning-related choices. It does not, by itself, provide a verified multiplayer order for those skills. If a player selects a mage or warlock-style role, prioritize the activities and equipment that the current game version associates with that role, then verify the resulting skill behavior in the character screen.

A practical multiplayer leveling plan

Stage 1: assign jobs before leaving the base

  1. Name the expedition objective. Decide whether the trip is primarily for opening territory, gathering resources, clearing enemies or preparing a boss encounter.
  2. Choose one lead activity. For an exploration trip, make Mining the lead. For a combat trip, make Melee Combat or Vitality the lead according to the designated fighter’s job.
  3. Assign ownership of progression. Say which character is intentionally training which skill. This avoids four players mining one wall while nobody builds combat progress, or four players chasing kills while the route remains blocked.
  4. Keep one flexible slot. Let a support player handle fishing, cooking, farming or emergency combat as the situation changes, without pretending that the available evidence proves an optimal order for those skills.

Stage 2: keep actions consistent during the expedition

The fastest way to dilute progression is to change jobs constantly. Give the miner enough uninterrupted wall work to make the role meaningful. Let the melee player land attacks rather than replacing them with unrelated actions. Allow the character responsible for enemy clears to complete encounters when Vitality is the target. These are coordination choices derived from how experience is awarded, not hidden multiplayer bonuses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 3: review after returning

  • Check which character actually performed the target activity.
  • Note whether the party is now short on access, damage or survivability.
  • Keep the same roles if the objective is unfinished; rotate only when another character needs that skill.
  • Update the plan after a patch, especially if the patch changes the skill roster or a skill’s activity requirements.

Stage 4: specialize once the team is stable

After the party has dependable exploration and combat coverage, add a specialist role. This is where Explosives, a dedicated support activity or a magic-oriented character can be useful. Specialization is easier to absorb when one player’s choice does not remove the team’s only miner or enemy clearer.

Where fishing, cooking and farming fit

There is no reliable source-backed order for Fishing, Cooking and Farming. That is not a reason to ignore them; it is a reason to tie them to a concrete base need. Put the player who already spends time on the relevant activity in charge of developing that skill, and do not promise that Fishing should precede Cooking or that Farming should precede either one.

A useful multiplayer division is functional rather than numerical: one player maintains food or farm work while another opens routes and one or more players cover combat. When the team no longer needs that support task, the support player can join exploration or combat and begin developing a different skill through normal play. The game does not require every character to follow the same order.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Looking for a skill-point menu

Symptom: You expect to save points and spend them on a preferred tree. Fix: Perform the matching activity. Mining experience requires damaging walls; Melee Combat experience requires landing melee hits; Vitality experience requires defeating enemies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the whole team shares one character’s progress

Symptom: One player mines while everyone expects the party’s Mining level to rise together. Fix: Treat the character doing the action as the character being trained, and rotate the job when another player needs the skill.

Following a pre-1.0 skill list

Symptom: A guide omits mage, warlock or newer skill choices. Fix: Check whether the guide predates the August 27, 2024 1.0 release and whether your game includes the March 10, 2025 version 1.1.0.1 Explosives update.

Taking an old talent-point claim literally

An older guide says that five skill levels produce a Talent Point. The available evidence does not confirm that this remains current. Do not plan a present-day build around that rule unless your version’s current interface and documentation confirm it.

Using a speed claim as a promise

The under-an-hour Explosives claim comes from a Steam guide tied to the 1.1.0 era and a boss-fight method. It is not a guaranteed time for every multiplayer group. If your party cannot reproduce it, return to the role-based plan rather than sacrificing needed Mining or combat coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting one “best” multiplayer order

No published source establishes a universal multiplayer-specific sequence. A four-player exploration group and a combat-focused boss group have different immediate needs. Judge the next skill by the objective, the class or playstyle each person selected and the role the team is currently missing.

Version checklist before you follow any guide

Question Why it matters
Is the game from the 1.0 release era or later? The August 27, 2024 full release added mage and warlock playstyles, so earlier guides may omit them.
Is the game updated to at least version 1.1.0.1? Explosives was added on March 10, 2025 and was absent from 1.0.
Does the guide state its version? Skill counts, talent claims and leveling routes can become stale after updates.
Does the advice describe a multiplayer test or only a solo guide? The available guidance does not verify a multiplayer-specific order; solo recommendations must be adapted to party roles.

Recommended priorities by party composition

Party pattern Suggested opening assignment What to avoid
One explorer and several fighters Explorer trains Mining; fighters divide Melee Combat and Vitality according to who lands hits and secures defeats. Having every player abandon the route to chase the same enemies.
Several explorers, few fighters Keep one dedicated miner and make the strongest combat character responsible for enemy clears; a second player can land melee hits when appropriate. Assuming Mining alone will solve combat bottlenecks.
Combat-first group Start with Melee Combat for the close-range attacker and Vitality for the character completing encounters; add Mining when access becomes the constraint. Using the Explosives speed route as the default before the team has basic coverage.
Mixed class or playstyle group Let each player train the activity that matches their chosen role, then add a specialist once the basic jobs are covered. Forcing Magic, Summoning or another newer tree into a fixed order unsupported by the current version’s documentation.

Bottom line for a new multiplayer save

Start with the bottleneck your party can identify: Mining for blocked exploration, Melee Combat for a player landing close-range hits, or Vitality for the character responsible for defeating enemies. Keep those jobs clear, rotate them only when another character needs the experience, and add Explosives or other specialized paths after checking the game’s version. Core Keeper does not provide a verified one-size-fits-all multiplayer sequence, so the strongest plan is the one that matches your team’s objective and each player’s actual activity.
