Before ordering a surprise, open the Alexa app and disable Amazon Shopping item-title announcements; then separate adult Amazon accounts and lock down voice purchasing.
Stop Alexa from saying or showing gift titles
This is the quickest protection against delivery alerts and shopping notifications exposing a present.

- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Notifications, then Amazon Shopping.
- Turn off the option that allows Alexa to say or show item titles in shopping notifications.
Make this change before placing the order. It addresses item-title announcements, but it does not make a shared Amazon sign-on private or prevent every possible shopping-related notification. Check the setting again after major app or device updates.
Use separate adult Amazon accounts
Amazon Family is the stronger account-level solution when two adults share an address. Invite the other adult household member so each adult uses a separate sign-on. Amazon says adult orders are automatically private from the other household members, while the household can include up to six members: two adults and up to four children.

Account separation protects order history and account views that a notification toggle cannot. It does not remove the need to review Alexa devices in rooms where other people can hear or see them.
Prevent accidental voice purchases
Alexa voice purchasing can use the account’s default payment and shipping settings unless you restrict it. In Alexa’s voice-purchasing settings, either disable voice purchasing or require a spoken confirmation code before an order is submitted.

- Disable purchasing: best for a household that never orders by voice.
- Use a confirmation code: preserves voice ordering while adding a verbal checkpoint.
Keep the code private and avoid saying it where the intended recipient can hear. This control prevents unintended purchases; the Amazon Shopping notification setting is what addresses spoken or on-screen product titles.
Audit every Echo in shared rooms
Amazon’s developer guidance notes that Alexa devices are often placed in communal environments such as living rooms. Treat the entire household device setup as an exposure surface, not just the Echo nearest the front door.

- Review every Echo Show separately. A screen can display an item title or image even when nobody asks a question.
- After changing the app setting, trigger or observe a normal shopping notification and confirm that the title is not spoken or displayed.
- Remember that visitors, children, and anyone passing through a room may hear or see an alert.
Buying another Echo does not solve the spoiler problem. The protection comes from notification, account, purchasing, and device settings.
Understand what Alexa keeps in the cloud
Amazon’s Alexa terms say voice inputs, shopping lists, and shopping history are processed and retained in the cloud. That processing enables conveniences such as synchronized lists and voice ordering, but it means a spoken surprise detail is not confined to the room where you said it.

For especially sensitive gifts, avoid putting the recipient’s name, the product description, or other revealing details into a voice request. Use the Amazon app or website instead, and review Alexa privacy controls regularly.
What changed on March 28, 2025
Amazon removed the limited Do Not Send Voice Recordings option on March 28, 2025. The option had applied only to eligible fourth-generation Echo Dot, Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 15 devices using U.S. English. The Associated Press reported Amazon’s figure that fewer than 0.03% of customers used it.

Amazon said users could still prevent Alexa from saving recordings. That remaining control affects recording storage; it does not replace the shopping-notification, account-separation, or voice-purchasing safeguards above.
