A digital movie purchase usually gives you licensed access through a service, not an unrestricted file or ownership of the film. Before checkout, confirm whether the button means purchase, rental, subscription access or another entitlement; read the store’s license and cancellation terms; and check title, region and download rules if you expect to watch across apps or offline.
What “buying” a digital movie means
“Buy” does not necessarily mean that you own the film or receive a file you can keep and play anywhere. The terms depend on the service and transaction. Prime Video, for example, classifies purchases as indefinite access in its transaction taxonomy, but its terms still grant a limited license for personal viewing. It says: “Amazon grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited license, during the applicable Viewing Period, to access and view the Digital Content”. Movies Anywhere makes the distinction explicit for its own service: “The purchase of a license to stream or download any Movies Anywhere Content does not create an ownership interest in the licensed Content.” A download through an app remains governed by that service’s terms; it is not automatically a DRM-free copy. Check the exact label on the checkout screen and title page. Prime Video treats purchases, rentals, subscription access, pay-per-view and free or ad-supported access as separate types, each subject to the relevant limited license. Do not assume that a title shown in a streaming catalog is included with a purchase, or that a rental has the same viewing period as a purchase.

- Rental: Time-limited access; confirm when the viewing period starts and when it ends.
- Subscription: Access depends on the subscription entitlement and its conditions, rather than a separate individual purchase.
- Pay-per-view or free/ad-supported: Distinct access categories; check the title’s stated conditions rather than treating them as purchases.

Check the license and cancellation cutoff
Look for language about personal or noncommercial viewing, transfer, supported devices, streaming and downloads. The practical question is not just whether a title is called “purchased,” but what access the service licenses and under what conditions.

Cancellation rules can also depend on the store and how you paid. Prime Video’s terms say a purchase order can be canceled within 14 days, but not after viewing or downloading begins. This is a Prime Video policy, not a general rule for other retailers. Check the terms for the actual store and billing route before pressing play or starting a download. Will the movie appear in your other apps?
Not necessarily. Movies Anywhere can share eligible movie entitlements among connected participating retailers, but a title must be eligible and available at the retailer where you want to watch it. Participation can change, and the service does not make every purchase available in every connected store.

As of October 8, 2026, Movies Anywhere listed Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV and DIRECTV as digital retailers. Understand what an offline download does—and does not—give you
Downloading a movie in an app can make it available for offline playback under that service’s rules; it does not necessarily create a permanent file you control. Movies Anywhere sets compatible-device limits and requires a device holding its downloads to connect and log in at least once every 90 days for those downloads to remain available for playback through the service. Run this pre-checklist at checkout
- Read the offer label. Establish whether it is an individual purchase, rental, subscription title, pay-per-view or free/ad-supported access.
- Read the license language. Check what “purchase” means for this service and note personal-use, transfer, device, streaming and download restrictions.
- Check cross-retailer eligibility. If you use Movies Anywhere, look up the exact film and confirm that the studio/title and your connected retailer are eligible.
- Confirm your region. Verify the service is available where you live and that its rules cover your territory.
- Check offline requirements. Confirm supported devices, login requirements and any limits in both the sharing service and the retailer’s own terms.
- Find the cancellation cutoff. Check the store’s rule for your purchase route, including whether starting playback or a download ends the cancellation window.
- Compare a physical edition. If keeping a copy you can hold is important, check the exact Blu-ray or 4K UHD Blu-ray edition; assess any included code separately.
