Sony has announced a ¥55,000 Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition for Japan, with release planned for November 19, 2026. It is not a newly announced US price cut or a worldwide cheaper PS5: Sony says the console is Japan-limited and requires both Japanese system language and a PlayStation account registered to Japan.
What Sony announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-only on October 13, 2026. The console, model CFI-2200B02S, is scheduled to go on sale in Japan on November 19. Reservations are due to begin October 20 through Japanese PlayStation retailers and ecommerce sites. Sony has not announced this model for the United States or other markets.

The announcement is a new model, not the first Japan-only ¥55,000 PS5. A different Japan-only Digital Edition at that price was reported in November 2025 and launched on November 21, 2025. The newly announced console is distinguished by its Midnight Black finish and its later 2026 release date.

How much does it cost, and who can use it?
Sony’s suggested retail price in Japan is ¥55,000, including tax. The console is limited to Japan and, according to Sony, must be used with the system language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account whose country or region is Japan. Those restrictions make it a poor fit for someone outside Japan who expects to use another region’s account or a different system language.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The price is not directly comparable with a US price tag: the markets, taxes and currencies differ. For context, Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony Direct displayed $649, $599 and $899, respectively, when accessed on October 13, 2026; those are a dated store snapshot, not guaranteed ongoing prices.
Sony says qualifying buyers of Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition consoles during a campaign running through March 31, 2027 may receive a two-year manufacturer warranty instead of the usual one year. An application is required, and buyers should confirm the campaign’s current terms and eligibility before relying on the extended coverage.
When does it go on sale?
- Reservations: Planned to start October 20, 2026, through Japanese PlayStation retailers and ecommerce sites.
- Release: Planned for November 19, 2026.
These are Sony’s announced dates for the Japanese market. The announcement does not establish stock, shipping availability or purchase eligibility for customers outside Japan.

Is it digital-only, and can you add a disc drive?
The console has no disc drive in the box. Sony plans to sell a matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, separately for ¥11,980 including tax, also from November 19, 2026. Sony says installing it enables packaged-game playback and requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console.
Sony also says that newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 onward will be sold only as downloads through PlayStation Store and retailers. This notice concerns new releases from that point onward; disc games released before January 2028 remain usable. It does not change the fact that the optional drive can play packaged games under the announced conditions.
What’s included, and what are the specifications?
The package includes the console with an 825 GB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal feet, an HDMI cable, power cord, USB cable, printed materials and the preinstalled ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. A vertical stand is sold separately. The 825 GB is the installed drive’s stated capacity, not the amount of free space for games: Sony notes that system software uses part of the storage.

This is a lower-priced Japan-market option with specific language and account requirements, not a general price reduction available to PS5 buyers worldwide. The ¥55,000 console is digital-only as sold; adding the separately priced drive brings the combined suggested prices to ¥66,980, before any other costs. A buyer considering an import should account for the Japan-region account and Japanese-language requirements rather than judging the deal by currency conversion alone.
