Dolby TrueHD Explained: Lossless Audio, Specs, and What You Need

Dolby TrueHD is a lossless audio codec used on Blu-ray. Learn what its specifications mean and how to check disc, player, receiver, and connection support.

Dolby TrueHD is a lossless audio codec used on Blu-ray: decoding it can reconstruct the encoded PCM audio without the data loss associated with lossy formats. That does not mean every player, receiver, or downstream audio-processing step preserves an identical signal. For playback, the specific disc, player, receiver, and connection all matter.

What Dolby TrueHD means

Dolby defines TrueHD as a lossless coding system for digital audio originally represented as linear PCM. Dolby describes the decoded result as bit-for-bit identical to the master recording; more precisely, lossless decoding preserves the encoded PCM content. Subsequent processing—such as downmixing, dialogue normalization, or dynamic-range control—can change what reaches the speakers.

Dolby calls the format “100 percent lossless” on its official Dolby TrueHD page. TrueHD is a Blu-ray audio format, not simply a label for high-bitrate audio.

What TrueHD can support on Blu-ray

Dolby’s published figures describe format capabilities, not guaranteed settings on every soundtrack. Its Blu-ray specifications list these maximum configurations:

Capability Dolby’s stated specification
Full-range channels at 96 kHz Up to 8 channels at 24-bit
Full-range channels at 192 kHz Up to 6 channels at 24-bit
Sampling-frequency range 44.1–192 kHz
Maximum Blu-ray bit rate 18 Mbps

These figures are from Dolby’s TrueHD format specifications; the page does not state a publication date. The 18 Mbps figure is a ceiling, not a claim that every Blu-ray track runs at that rate.

A TrueHD stream may include as many as three mixes: 7.1-channel, 5.1-channel, and two-channel stereo. Dolby also describes support for dialogue normalization, dynamic-range control, and downmix options. A disc only offers the mixes and options its authoring includes, so the codec’s capabilities do not guarantee that a particular title exposes each one.

TrueHD versus Dolby Digital Plus

The key distinction is the coding method: Dolby classifies TrueHD as lossless and Dolby Digital Plus as lossy. They are separate codecs, not merely two bit-rate settings of one format. Dolby’s Dolby Digital Plus overview and its TrueHD technical paper describe the distinction.

Lossless describes how the encoded audio is reconstructed; it does not, by itself, establish that a listener will hear a difference in a particular room or system. Content mix, playback support, speaker setup, and any processing can all affect the result. Do not infer audible superiority from the codec name alone.

What you need to play Dolby TrueHD

Start with the exact movie or disc: confirm that its audio track listing names Dolby TrueHD. Then check the official specifications for the exact player, receiver, and connection path. Dolby’s format and product-category pages identify Blu-ray players, discs, and AV receivers as relevant parts of the ecosystem, but category-level descriptions do not confirm support for every model. See Dolby’s format page, home entertainment overview, and home theater overview for context.

  • Disc: Verify the audio formats listed for that specific title; do not assume every Blu-ray includes TrueHD.
  • Player: Confirm that the exact model supports TrueHD playback and the intended audio output.
  • Receiver or other audio equipment: Confirm that the exact model supports TrueHD decoding or the signal path you intend to use.
  • Connection: Check the player and receiver manuals for supported audio output and input formats. The format’s presence alone does not guarantee a particular connection will pass it unchanged.

The cited Dolby material does not establish a universal streaming-service availability rule or a guaranteed signal path for any named device. Treat disc and model specifications as the deciding evidence.

How to troubleshoot a missing TrueHD track

  1. Check the disc menu and track list. Confirm that the title actually includes a TrueHD track and select it if the disc offers multiple audio options.
  2. Check the player settings. Consult the exact model’s manual to see whether its output is configured to send the supported audio format to the connected equipment.
  3. Check every device in the path. Verify the receiver or other audio device’s TrueHD support and confirm the connection is supported by both devices.
  4. Distinguish codec support from mix availability. A system may support TrueHD while the title lacks a particular channel mix or selectable option.
