A Lenovo error or malfunction does not, by itself, mean a part has failed. Check when the symptom began, inspect the affected device in Windows Device Manager, compare its driver with Lenovo’s listing for your exact model, and run Lenovo diagnostics. A driver issue becomes more likely when the problem follows a relevant update or Windows identifies a driver/configuration error; a hardware repair becomes more likely when a component test reports a fault or the symptom persists after appropriate software checks. Neither clue alone is a diagnosis.
Start with the symptom and when it began
Write down what stopped working, whether the problem affects one component or the whole PC, and whether it started after a Windows or driver update. Restart once if it is safe to do so, then note whether the issue returns. A problem appearing after an update makes that driver worth checking, but timing alone does not prove the update caused it. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts may stem from hardware, a driver, or software (Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop codes).

Check the affected device in Device Manager
- In Windows, open Device Manager and locate the device associated with the symptom.
- Open the device’s properties and read the Device status message and any error code. Look up that exact code in Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guide and follow its code-specific steps.
- On the device’s Driver tab, note the installed driver details. Lenovo’s Windows 10 and 11 driver instructions explain how to identify hardware and compare the installed driver version with the one offered for the device.
Error codes are clues, not a universal hardware verdict. Microsoft says Code 1 indicates a missing or incorrectly configured driver and recommends updating it. Code 43 means Windows stopped the device after it reported a problem; Microsoft recommends driver reinstall steps and consulting the device manufacturer. Code 24 can reflect incorrect installation, hardware failure, or a need for a new driver. Interpret the specific code rather than treating any one of them as proof that a component must be replaced.
Use a Lenovo driver route that matches your model
Check the exact Lenovo model and the Windows version before installing anything. Find the model’s driver listing on Lenovo Support, or use a Lenovo update utility if it supports your product. Lenovo offers Lenovo System Update, but it is Windows-only and support depends on product family and requirements; it is not an instruction for every Lenovo device. Lenovo’s relevant guidance says to run Windows Update before System Update, because some updates depend on Windows components.

Lenovo Vantage is another supported route on compatible devices. If Windows Update does not provide a needed driver, Microsoft advises checking the hardware manufacturer’s website for a driver compatible with the Windows version (Microsoft’s driver guidance). Avoid installing a driver simply because a third-party utility labels it outdated; the sources here support model-matched manufacturer and Windows routes.
Run Lenovo diagnostics before deciding on service
Lenovo says Vantage can scan hardware components and perform performance health checks. Lenovo’s health-check page also notes that Lenovo Solution Center support ended effective April 2019, so it should not be treated as the current health-check route. See Lenovo Diagnostics and Health Check.

If Windows will not start, do not assume a normal in-Windows scan is available. Lenovo’s diagnostic guide recommends bootable options for certain situations, including UEFI diagnostics for newer Windows-based machines. Consult its model- and system-specific guidance at Lenovo Diagnostic Solutions.

There is no universal threshold at which every Lenovo needs repair. A test result, persistent symptom, or inability to boot is a reason to seek model-specific evaluation—not a basis to promise a part replacement or quote a repair price without a diagnosis.
