Windscribe may connect from China, but Windscribe does not promise that it will. Whether a connection succeeds depends on your network, your region, the server you choose, the protocol and port, and the time of day. Windscribe’s own guidance is to start with the app’s automatic selection, then test protocols and server locations by hand. Stealth and WStunnel are options for restrictive networks. They are not guaranteed bypasses.
Does Windscribe work in China?
Windscribe’s China support article, last updated October 23, 2025, says some users in restricted countries can connect while others cannot. A combination that works today can stop working later, because network restrictions change. The same article recommends switching protocols and servers when one combination fails, rather than assuming the service is either available or blocked.

In practice, that means three things:
- There is no fixed success rate for China. Windscribe does not publish one, and this guide does not estimate one.
- Your result depends on the combination of protocol, port, and server location, not only on whether the app is installed.
- Windscribe’s own wording is: “The best protocol is the protocol that works at that time.” Treat that as a description of how the service behaves, not a promise.

Stealth and WStunnel: what each one does
Both options are designed for restrictive networks, but they hide the VPN traffic in different ways.

Stealth
Stealth wraps OpenVPN inside a TLS tunnel using Stunnel. Windscribe positions it for restrictive networks after ordinary methods have failed. It is one of the protocols Windscribe lists for restricted-country use, alongside WireGuard and the OpenVPN transports.
WStunnel
WStunnel carries OpenVPN traffic over WebSockets. Windscribe describes it as a fallback rather than a default. Its added overhead often lowers speeds, so Windscribe recommends it only when faster options fail. Its WStunnel instructions specify port 443, and WStunnel is the only option Windscribe documents with that restriction. On Android, Windscribe warns that the WStunnel option may require a special app build, so check which build you have before relying on it.

Use these steps when automatic selection fails in the Windscribe desktop app.

- Open Windscribe and disconnect before changing any connection settings.
- Go to Preferences > Connection and set Connection Mode to Manual.
- Select Stealth or WStunnel. Windscribe’s restricted-country guidance also suggests trying WireGuard.
- Start with port 443. For protocols other than WStunnel, test the other applicable ports and judge them by access, speed, and stability.
- Connect to a location and check whether ordinary browsing works. If it does not, change the protocol, port, or server location and try again.
- If the protocol options are still failing, enable Circumvent Censorship in Preferences > Connection and reconnect.
Windscribe states that the desktop and mobile apps default to Automatic mode, which picks a protocol and port for you. Manual mode is the switch that lets you choose. Source: Windscribe, “What Protocols are available with Windscribe?” (November 4, 2025).
Android setup
Install Windscribe from the official download instructions in Windscribe’s Android guide, which Windscribe dated August 21, 2026. Sign in, connect, and choose a location as usual. For restrictive networks, the protocol steps differ from desktop in one place: the Connection Mode setting is under the app menu.

- Open the app menu and choose General.
- Set Connection Mode to Manual.
- Select Stealth or WStunnel, and start with port 443.
- Connect to a location, then check whether ordinary browsing works.
If normal protocols fail, open Preferences > Connection, enable Circumvent Censorship, and manually try WireGuard, OpenVPN TCP or UDP, Stealth, or WStunnel in turn. Do not assume that the standard Play Store build always includes WStunnel. Windscribe’s troubleshooting article says some users may need a special Android build to see it.

Choosing a protocol
The table below uses Windscribe’s own descriptions. None of these comparisons are measured speed results or independent tests.

Do not treat any single protocol as the best choice for China. Windscribe’s guidance is that the answer changes with the network.
Troubleshooting when connections keep failing
Work through these branches in order, changing one variable at a time so you can tell which change helped.

- Automatic fails: switch to Manual mode and test protocols. Automatic is the first thing to try, not the last.
- Protocol connects but browsing fails: change the server location. Windscribe notes that one location can fail while another works.
- Every standard protocol fails: enable Circumvent Censorship, then retry WireGuard, Stealth, and WStunnel on port 443. Keep WStunnel as the last resort because of its speed cost.
- A combination that used to work stops: return to Manual mode and retest. Windscribe says network changes and new restrictions can break a previously working setup.
What this guide does and does not establish
- The setup steps and protocol descriptions come from Windscribe’s own help pages. They are not independent tests of Chinese networks, and no success percentage is claimed.
- Windscribe’s Android guide is dated August 21, 2026, and the protocol and restricted-country articles are dated between October and November 2025. The app menu, labels, and protocol availability can change, so check the live app before you rely on these steps.
- Windscribe’s documentation does not address whether individual VPN use is lawful in China. Check current Chinese rules yourself before you install or use any VPN.
