Microsoft says the Windows Copilot app can display recently opened files by referencing Windows Recent Items, but it does not automatically scan or upload all files. Separate features can work with file contents or relevant PC data. Browsing history is handled differently: Microsoft says it is stored on the device and, depending on settings, may be sent as diagnostic data. Edge import and sync are separate choices.
What Copilot can do with files on your PC
Recent-file suggestions
Microsoft says Copilot for Windows can show files you recently opened by referencing Windows Recent Items. Its Windows Copilot privacy FAQ states: “Copilot does not scan your PC or upload any files automatically.” That statement describes this automatic recent-file display; it does not mean every Copilot feature is unable to access file contents. You can hide a file shown in the recent-files list.

File-content features and PC insights
Microsoft also documents features that can help find or open files and answer questions about their contents, including files synced from OneDrive on the device. Those are distinct from automatically listing recent items. A separate experimental PC insights feature is opt-in: Microsoft says it prompts before accessing relevant device or file data, retrieves only data needed for the request, and lets you revoke permissions. Feature availability can vary by app version and rollout.

In short, distinguish a recent-file reference from asking Copilot to work with a file or granting a PC insights feature permission. The first is not evidence that Copilot has scanned every file; the latter may involve specific file or PC data as part of the requested task.

What happens to browsing history
Microsoft’s Windows FAQ says Copilot for Windows saves browsing history on the device. Depending on your settings, that history may be sent to Microsoft as diagnostic data to help diagnose and improve products. This is different from importing Edge browser data or syncing it between apps: diagnostic transmission is a separate setting, while import and sync are choices you can review in Copilot.
To review the Windows Copilot browsing-data and privacy controls, open Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security. Microsoft says the Privacy section includes Send optional diagnostic data to improve Microsoft products. Restart Copilot for Windows after changing this setting to finish applying the change.

Edge import and sync are separate choices
Microsoft says Copilot can import Edge cookies at launch if you allow it. If you are signed in, you can also enable sync for history, favorites, passwords, and other browser data between Copilot apps and Edge. These are not the same as Copilot merely keeping local browsing history.

Review them under Settings > Browsing settings > Sync and Import. There you can manage Bring over your site data from Microsoft Edge and sync. The individual-account import setting is documented as available for US accounts; Microsoft also says the setting is available to organizational accounts. Controls for clearing data
Clear browsing data in Copilot for Windows
Microsoft lists this path: Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Clear Browsing data. Choose a time range and the data types to remove. Available types include cookies and site data, cached files, passwords, form data, permissions, and media data. Clearing download-history entries removes the list of downloads, not the downloaded files themselves.
Delete Windows diagnostic data
For Windows diagnostic data, Microsoft lists Start > Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback, then Delete under Delete diagnostic data. This Windows control is distinct from clearing Copilot’s browsing data.

Personal-account activity history
For personal Microsoft accounts, Microsoft documents exporting or deleting Copilot app activity history through the Microsoft privacy dashboard. This is separate from the local browsing-data controls. Microsoft’s individual Copilot FAQ says conversation activity is stored for 18 months by default and can be deleted; that figure applies to conversation activity under that FAQ’s scope, not to local Windows browsing history.

Microsoft provides separate guidance for personal Microsoft accounts and work or school Microsoft Entra accounts. The personal-account controls include memory and personalization, chat history, web search, personalized advertising, and Edge browser-data import. Organizational accounts may have different settings, policies, and availability. Check the controls shown in your own signed-in account rather than applying personal-account steps to a work or school installation.
Do not confuse the Windows app with Browse with Copilot in Edge
Browse with Copilot is a separate Edge feature, not the Windows Copilot app’s browsing pane. Microsoft says that when this Edge feature is active, prompts, responses, and a record of work are saved in conversation history. Information entered directly into a webpage is not saved by Copilot, though it may be saved in Edge. Microsoft advises against using the feature for financial activity, personal identifiers, medical records, or highly confidential information, and recommends monitoring its actions.
A practical way to check your setup
- Identify the app and account. Check whether you mean the Windows Copilot app or Browse with Copilot in Edge, and whether you are signed in with a personal or work/school account.
- Review file-related permissions. Treat recent-file display, file-content assistance, and experimental PC insights as separate capabilities. Review any permission prompt before approving access.
- Check browsing privacy settings. In Copilot for Windows, open Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy and review the optional diagnostic-data setting.
- Check Edge import and sync. Open Settings > Browsing settings > Sync and Import and review both controls.
- Clear the relevant data if needed. Use Copilot’s Clear Browsing data control for its browsing data, Windows Diagnostics & feedback for diagnostic data, or the privacy dashboard for personal-account app activity history.
Microsoft’s cited support pages are official guidance, but they do not state publication dates. Because privacy settings, feature rollouts, and regional availability can change, the labels and options visible in your current app and account are the most relevant guide.
