They can connect using the Wi‑Fi generations they already support; they won’t gain Wi‑Fi 6 features unless the client device supports Wi‑Fi 6 too.
A router or access point provides the wireless network. The devices that join it—such as phones, computers, and smart-home products—are called clients.

Will older Wi‑Fi devices connect to a Wi‑Fi 6 router?
Usually, yes. The Wireless Broadband Alliance’s Wi‑Fi 6 Deployment Guidelines & Scenarios describes Wi‑Fi 6 access points communicating with legacy 802.11a/b/g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac clients. Cisco likewise explains that Wi‑Fi 6 supports mandatory legacy operating modes in its Wi‑Fi 6/6E FAQ.

That is backward compatibility, not an upgrade of the older device. As Cisco Meraki puts it in its Wi‑Fi 6 technical guide, a client’s communication is limited to the most recent Wi‑Fi standard it supports. A device that supports Wi‑Fi 5, for example, remains a Wi‑Fi 5 client when connected to a Wi‑Fi 6 access point.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What does the older device gain—and what does it not?
An older client can use the new network in its supported mode, but it does not directly use Wi‑Fi 6 client features such as OFDMA. The Wireless Broadband Alliance notes that Wi‑Fi 6 access points do not improve the PHY performance or range of legacy clients. The actual connection also depends on the particular client, access point, firmware, security settings, and configuration, so compatibility at the standard level is not a guarantee for every model.
Do both the router and device need Wi‑Fi 6?
Yes, for the client to use Wi‑Fi 6 features, both the access point and client need Wi‑Fi 6 support. Cisco’s FAQ makes this distinction: a Wi‑Fi 6 router can serve older clients, but Wi‑Fi 6 benefits require compatible client devices too.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
So a router upgrade does not automatically mean replacing your phones, computers, or connected devices. Replace a client when you specifically want Wi‑Fi 6 capability, need to resolve a model-specific issue, or have another reason to upgrade. A router change alone is not a reason to discard working devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Wi‑Fi 6E different?
Yes. Wi‑Fi 6E adds operation in the 6 GHz band; ordinary Wi‑Fi 6 does not make a device 6 GHz-capable. Intel says its Wi‑Fi 6 products support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and are not designed for 6 GHz. To use 6 GHz, both the router and client need Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 capability, as explained in Intel’s Wi‑Fi 6 vs. Wi‑Fi 6E/7 guidance. This distinction concerns the band: an older Wi‑Fi client may still connect on a band and mode it supports, but it cannot join 6 GHz just because the access point offers it.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Can you add Wi‑Fi 6 to an older laptop or computer?
Possibly, but do not assume the wireless card is replaceable or that any adapter will work. Intel’s compatibility guidance for the Wi‑Fi 6 AX200 says suitability depends on the system, including its motherboard, BIOS, M.2 socket, and regulatory requirements. Check the computer manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model before buying or installing a card; for a particular system, its maker’s guidance is more useful than a general compatibility claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you replace an older device?
- Keep it if it connects reliably and its current Wi‑Fi capability meets your needs; a Wi‑Fi 6 router can generally coexist with older clients.
- Consider upgrading the client if you want it to use Wi‑Fi 6 features. The client and access point both need Wi‑Fi 6 support.
- Check specifically for 6 GHz if that is your goal. It requires a Wi‑Fi 6E- or Wi‑Fi 7-capable client as well as a compatible router.
- Verify before changing an internal adapter by checking the computer maker’s model-specific support information.
For an individual connection problem, consult the router and device manuals and verify their supported standards, bands, security settings, and firmware. A broad compatibility rule cannot establish how every particular combination will behave.
