The most reliable way to deter household ants is to remove the food, water, and entry routes attracting them, then use a labeled bait if ants keep foraging indoors. Baits can reach a colony through worker ants, but results depend on species and may take weeks or months. Vinegar can temporarily disrupt a trail; it should not be mistaken for a way to eliminate a nest.
Start by finding the trail and identifying the ants
Follow ants to see where they enter and what they are visiting. Note whether the trail leads to food, a water source, a crack, or another route into the building. A photo or specimen can help with identification. Ant species differ in nesting habits and food preferences, so identification can affect which control approach is useful. If the species is unclear or the problem persists, ask a local extension service or pest management professional for help. University of Minnesota Extension’s ant guidance discusses identification and control.

Make the home less attractive and harder to enter
Prevention reduces the food and moisture that draw ants inside. It can make an infestation less likely, but sanitation and sealing alone do not kill an established nest.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wipe up food and drink residue, and keep counters and floors free of crumbs.
- Store human and pet food in sealed, insect-resistant containers. Rinse recyclables before storing them.
- Remove standing food and water, and repair leaks or other moisture problems.
- After locating an active route, seal small cracks ants use to enter.
- Where practical, trim vegetation that touches or bridges to the building.
These steps are consistent with EPA ant-control guidance and University of Minnesota Extension’s recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- ATTRACTS & KILLS: Liquid ant bait stations provide comprehensive ant control, targeting common household ants including acrobat, crazy, ghost, little black, odorous house, and pavement ants throughout your home with effective ant traps indoor
- KILLS THE QUEEN & THE ENTIRE COLONY: TERRO liquid ant bait contains borax-based formula that attracts worker ants to consume and carry back to the colony, effectively eliminating both visible ants and hidden nest populations for complete indoor ant killer control
- EFFECTIVE ELIMINATION: Fast-acting ant killer bait reduces ant activity within days as worker ants transport the liquid ant bait back to their colony, providing widespread elimination of entire ant populations with these sugar ant traps indoor
- EASY TO USE: Ready-to-use ant bait stations require no setup and can be placed along baseboards, corners, countertops, and other high-traffic areas where ants commonly travel for optimal ant trap indoor pest control results
- LONG-LASTING: Once placed, the bait continues to work for weeks, as long as ants continue to visit the stations. Complete control may take up to 2-4 weeks, depending on the infestation size
Use bait when ants continue to forage indoors
Ant bait is intended to reach a nest through foraging workers: they take bait back and share it. It can address a colony rather than just the ants visible on a counter, but only when workers accept the bait and can carry it back. Different species may prefer different bait formulations; there is no basis for assuming all household ants prefer sweet bait.
- Choose a product whose label covers the suspected ant and the intended location.
- Place it near active foragers as the label directs, rather than somewhere ants are not traveling.
- Keep the bait available and monitor it. Replenish or replace it only as directed on the product label.
- Do not spray near bait or contaminate it with household chemicals. Ants may avoid contaminated bait, and sprays can interfere with workers carrying bait to the nest.
Visible activity may take weeks or months to decline. Competing food, too little bait, multiple colonies, contamination, or a bait the ants reject can all limit results. If ants ignore one formulation, that does not prove baiting cannot work; species or colony food preferences may differ. See University of Minnesota Extension’s ant guidance and Utah State University Extension’s species-specific guidance.
Rank #2
- Kills the Colony: You will receive 16 sets of ant bait stations, which are sufficient and reusable to effectively control common house ants in your home, such as: Acrobat ant, Crazy ant, Sugar ant, Ghost ant, Argentine ant, Little black ants, Pavement, Odorous house, etc. Note: Liquid ant bait is not included
- Four Entrances Design: The four entrance design of the ant bait control can accelerate the end of ant invasion faster. Compared with single entrance models, worker ants can reach the liquid ant baits faster, thereby speeding up the distribution process of ant poison throughout the ant colony
- Sturdy Plastic Shell: Our termite bait stations are made of a clear plastic shell, which is compatible with any type of liquid ant bait. The hard plastic shell is stronger and more reliable than paper and cardboard alternatives and can be reusable
- Efficient and Neat: Whether indoors or outdoors, just set up the ant bait traps, add liquid ant bait (not included), and then watch how it attracts ants, and you can easily eliminate the entire ant colony
- Indoor and Outdoor Use: Set ant killer indoor around areas where ants are active, such as skirting boards, near walls, corners, kitchen counters, sinks and refrigerators. In addition, it provides long lasting ant killing power for homes, apartments, schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and other areas
Know what “barrier” means
Physical exclusion
Sealing entry cracks and removing vegetation bridges are physical barriers: they block access without applying pesticide. They work best as part of prevention, alongside food and moisture control.

Pesticide perimeter treatments
A pesticide barrier is a chemical treatment applied around a perimeter. It may temporarily help when a nest cannot be found, but it is not a dependable long-term substitute for addressing entry, food, and the nest. Repellent residues can disrupt ant trails or conflict with baiting, so do not combine treatments casually. Use a perimeter product only if its label permits that pest and location, and follow its directions. University of Minnesota Extension and Utah State University Extension describe these limits; the guidance from Utah State University is specific to odorous house ants, not a blanket recommendation for every ant or product.

- Kills ants where they hide for up to 3 months
- After ants feed on the bait, they return to the colony and transfer the bait to the queen and the others, thereby killing the entire colony
- Use indoors in corners, along walls and near entry points
- Child-resistant
What natural repellents can—and cannot—do
Vinegar and water
Wiping an ant trail with a mild vinegar-and-water solution may temporarily disrupt it. Treat this as trail cleanup, not nest control: ants may return if the food source or entry route remains.
Essential oils, spices, and peels
Lavender and other essential oils, cinnamon, red pepper, orange peels, herbs, and similar pantry remedies are not established ways to get rid of ants. “Natural” does not mean effective or automatically safe. University of Minnesota Extension distinguishes temporary trail disruption from methods that eliminate ants.

Use pesticides with care
Use only products labeled for the ant and site you are treating, and follow all label directions. Keep bait stations and other pesticides inaccessible to children, pets, and non-target animals. Do not transfer pesticide to an unlabeled container or apply more than directed. EPA says bait stations can pose low exposure risk when used according to their labels and kept out of reach of children and pets; that does not make every product or placement suitable for every home. For general safety advice, see EPA’s smart pest-control guidance and EPA’s pest-control do’s and don’ts. A reviewed EPA pesticide label illustrates that a product can cover some common household ants while excluding other categories; it is an example, not a universal recommendation.
