Usually, an SSD upgrade is a storage upgrade—not a reliable way to extend battery life or raise frame rates. The cited sources do not establish that changing a handheld gaming PC’s SSD by itself produces a material difference in gaming endurance or FPS. More capacity is the clear benefit; loading time is a separate measure from how smoothly a game runs.
What an SSD upgrade can—and cannot—change
Capacity: the main benefit
A larger compatible SSD gives you more internal space for installed games. That can be useful if your current drive is nearly full, but it does not automatically make games run faster.

Loading time is not frame rate
Storage can affect loading tasks, but a loading-time result does not demonstrate higher FPS, smoother gameplay, or longer battery life. ASUS says the ROG Ally’s microSD loading time was close to that of its dedicated PCIe Gen 4 SSD in the manufacturer’s stated comparison: ASUS ROG Ally product page. That is a manufacturer claim about loading, not a test of frame rates or battery endurance.
FPS and sustained performance
The cited sources do not include a controlled before-and-after test that changes only the SSD in a handheld. Do not expect an SSD replacement alone to raise FPS or eliminate stutter. Gaming performance also depends on the APU, power profile, thermals, game, drivers, and settings; GamersNexus’s handheld comparison discusses APU power and power and thermal limits.
#1 Best Overall
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 2TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Battery life
No cited source isolates an SSD swap as the cause of a measured change in handheld gaming endurance. Battery results vary with the device, game, display, settings, and system power behavior. Tom’s Hardware notes that observed battery life varied by game and settings, while GamersNexus considers battery size alongside system power. Neither establishes an SSD-upgrade effect.
Check compatibility before buying
Handhelds do not all use the same SSD size. ASUS lists an M.2 2230 NVMe Gen4x4 SSD in the original ROG Ally test configuration, while its ROG Ally X announcement describes a redesigned board with an M.2 2280 slot and a 1TB drive: ASUS ROG Ally X announcement. These are different physical formats, so an SSD that fits one model may not fit another.

Before ordering, confirm the exact model and revision, supported interface, drive dimensions, and physical clearance. For the Steam Deck, Tom’s Hardware describes the M.2 SSD as upgradable but says replacement is more involved than on the Ally; follow instructions for your specific model and take care during disassembly: Tom’s Hardware Steam Deck and ROG Ally comparison.

Choose an SSD for fit and storage needs
Once you have confirmed compatibility, compare the drive’s physical form factor, interface, capacity, physical clearance, warranty, and price. The cited sources do not establish a universally best SSD brand or a battery-life or gaming-performance ranking for handheld drives. Treat any claim that a replacement drive will meaningfully improve endurance or FPS with caution unless it is supported by a specific, relevant test.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
An SSD upgrade is not a battery upgrade
Changing the battery is a separate modification. Windows Central’s guide discusses a ROG Ally battery-capacity modification associated with about 50% more endurance; that figure concerns the battery change, not an SSD replacement: Windows Central ROG Ally battery upgrade guide. It should not be used to estimate what an SSD swap will do.
