To use Retro Song Bird, insert a Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridge into the slot on top, then browse its tracks with the next and previous controls and adjust the volume. Bird Cartel says the device reads supported cartridge ROM sections and emulates the Game Boy sound engine to play music and sound effects. It is announced for late 2026, so these are planned features—not a hands-on review of a device confirmed to be shipping now.
How do I use Retro Song Bird with a Game Boy cartridge?
- Insert the cartridge. Put a Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridge into the slot on top of the unit.
- Choose what to hear. Use the next and previous controls to navigate the track list, which the manufacturer says includes music and sound effects.
- Adjust the volume. Use the device’s volume controls while browsing or listening.
- Route the audio if needed. Listen through the unit or connect its stereo line out to other audio equipment.
The official page sums up cartridge playback as “That’s it. Enjoy.” It says Retro Song Bird uses a map of more than 1,900 cartridges to locate relevant ROM sections, then produces audio through register-accurate emulation of the Game Boy sound engine. That is the manufacturer’s description of how playback works, not an independently verified compatibility or performance result. Bird Cartel’s official Retro Song Bird page

What cartridges and games does it support?

The manufacturer also says the device can play homebrew game soundtracks made with GB Studio. It does not name Game Boy Advance as a supported cartridge family, so do not assume GBA support. The cited information also does not establish compatibility with every flash-cart model.

Can I save tracks or connect it to other audio gear?
The advertised audio features include stereo line out, WAV export, and the ability to split the Game Boy’s four sound channels—two square channels, wave, and noise—into separate USB audio streams. The manufacturer also lists playback of songs saved on LSDj cartridges. These are feature claims; exact menu steps, file handling details, and supported software or operating-system requirements are not specified in the cited sources.

The official page lists shipping for late 2026, but gives no exact date or price.
