Your internet provider can generally detect that your connection is communicating with Tor nodes, but it ordinarily cannot see the names or addresses of websites you visit through Tor Browser. That is a limit on what your local ISP can learn from the connection—not a promise that you are invisible to every observer or that every app on your device is protected.
What your ISP can see when you use Tor
Tor Project says that a local ISP can observe that a connection is communicating with Tor nodes. It does not ordinarily see the websites’ names and addresses visited through Tor Browser. The organization describes this as protection against local observers, including your internet provider (Tor Project: What is Tor Browser and how does it work?; Tor Project: The privacy and anonymity protections Tor offers).

This answers the common question, “Can my ISP see what websites I visit on Tor?”: generally, not from the Tor Browser connection itself. Tor also does not make your use of Tor undetectable to the ISP. The cited Tor guidance describes what a local observer can see on the network; it does not establish what any particular provider records, how long it retains records, or when it discloses them.

Tor routes traffic through multiple relays, adding layers of encryption along the way. Your ISP sees the connection to Tor; it is not the party making the final connection to the public website. The exit relay connects to the public internet, so the website sees a Tor network address rather than your home IP address. This distributed routing differs from a single proxy, whose operator may be able to associate a user with the sites browsed (Tor Project: The privacy and anonymity protections Tor offers).

That does not mean no one can see anything. The exit relay is the point where traffic leaves Tor for the public internet. Tor Project cautions that a malicious exit relay may be able to see traffic sent through it; when the connection to the site uses HTTPS, the relay can know the destination but HTTPS protects the connection’s content (Tor Project: The privacy and anonymity protections Tor offers).
Tor and HTTPS protect different things
Tor changes how traffic is routed, helping keep visited destinations from your local network observer. HTTPS encrypts the web connection between your browser and a site, protecting its contents against eavesdropping and tampering. They are complementary protections, not synonyms. Tor Project’s comparison of visibility categories—including the site visited, login details, transmitted data, public IP location, and Tor use—shows that what an observer can learn depends on whether Tor and HTTPS are in use (Tor Project: HTTPS and Tor).

Tor Browser includes HTTPS-Only Mode and uses HTTPS whenever possible. If a site only supports HTTP, however, you can still visit it after accepting the warning. In that case, the connection to the site lacks HTTPS encryption, so do not assume Tor alone protects the contents from the exit relay or other parties able to observe that segment (Tor Project: HTTPS-Only Mode).

Why Tor Browser matters
Using another browser with traffic routed through Tor is not equivalent to using Tor Browser. Tor Project warns that other browsers can expose identifying information through DNS or WebRTC leaks, reveal fingerprinting details, or retain cookies and cache that can link activity. Its recommendation is to use Tor Browser rather than assume a separately configured browser has the same protections (Tor Project: Staying anonymous).

Also consider activity that identifies you independently of your network address. Signing in to an account tied to your identity, for example, can disclose who you are to that service even if the connection reaches it through Tor. Tor protects particular aspects of network privacy; it cannot prevent you from identifying yourself through what you do.

If you search the web using Tor Browser, your ISP generally cannot read the search destinations from the Tor connection. That does not establish what records a specific provider keeps or how it handles legal or other disclosure requests. Those practices depend on the provider and applicable jurisdiction; the general Tor guidance cited here does not specify them.

Nor does the ISP’s limited view settle what other parties know. A website or account provider can learn information you submit, and Tor’s exit relay occupies a different position from your ISP. Keep the question specific: Tor can obscure destinations from a local network observer, while HTTPS, careful account use, and Tor Browser’s protections address other risks.
