The Navy has installed shipboard lasers intended to counter drones, but public sources do not confirm that sailors fire its ODIN or HELIOS systems with Xbox-style controllers. NAVSEA says those systems use a Laser Weapon System Console; it does not identify that console as an Xbox controller. Game-style controls have been discussed in other military contexts, which is not proof of the interface used for these shipboard lasers.
Does the Navy use Xbox controllers to fire lasers?
Not on the evidence available for the named shipboard systems. A 2024 WBUR interview discusses game-style controls in a military laser context, and WIRED reports game-style controllers used with other military systems. Neither source establishes that an Xbox-style gamepad is the firing control for ODIN or HELIOS.

It is also important to distinguish a control interface from the full engagement process. A controller’s appearance alone would not show how a system detects or tracks a target, or how an engagement is authorized and executed. The reviewed public sources do not document those details for ODIN or HELIOS.

ODIN stands for Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy. In a February 2020 release, the Navy said it had recently installed its first ODIN and described it as a laser weapon system that lets a ship counter unmanned aerial systems. The release also forecast that units would become operational across the fleet within the next couple of years; that was a plan announced in 2020, not a current fleet count.

ODIN’s later status requires care: a May 2026 NAVSEA article said ODIN was not a Navy program of record at that time. The same article described Navy work to establish sailor training as the systems matured and saw fleet use. Those statements describe the status and training effort reported then; they do not provide an updated count of installed systems.
What does HELIOS do on a Navy ship?
HELIOS means High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance. Lockheed Martin describes it as combining a high-energy laser and optical dazzler with long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance functions. The company says HELIOS is integrated into the ship and its combat system.

HELIOS is distinct from ODIN. The Congressional Research Service describes ODIN as a bolt-on capability and HELIOS as integrated with the ship’s combat system. That architectural difference does not, on its own, establish comparative effectiveness, range, or how either system is operated.

ODIN and HELIOS: what public sources establish
| System | What it is described as doing | Architecture | Interface disclosed |
|---|---|---|---|
| ODIN | The Navy describes it as a laser weapon system for countering unmanned aerial systems. U.S. Navy, February 20, 2020 | Described by CRS as bolt-on. Congressional Research Service report | NAVSEA says it uses the Laser Weapon System Console; it does not identify an Xbox controller. NAVSEA, May 18, 2026 |
| HELIOS | Manufacturer-described combination of high-energy laser, optical dazzler, and surveillance functions. Lockheed Martin, January 9, 2021 | Integrated into the ship and combat system, according to Lockheed Martin; CRS distinguishes it from ODIN as combat-system-integrated. | NAVSEA says it uses the Laser Weapon System Console; the source does not specify Xbox hardware or a gamepad. NAVSEA, May 18, 2026 |
How are shipboard anti-drone lasers operated?
NAVSEA says ODIN, HELIOS, and the Solid State Laser Technology Maturation system use the same user interface, called the Laser Weapon System Console. Its May 2026 article describes a Navy lab effort to train sailors on laser weapons, but does not describe the console’s hardware or provide a step-by-step firing procedure.

That is the limit of what the cited public descriptions establish about operation: a named console and a training context, not a documented Xbox-style controller or a complete account of target selection, authorization, tracking, and firing. A consumer controller mentioned in coverage of another military application cannot fill that gap.

The two parts of the story are real but should not be conflated: the Navy has shipboard laser systems, and game-style controls have appeared in some military contexts. The available sources do not connect an Xbox-style controller to ODIN or HELIOS. The Navy’s 2020 ODIN release quoted then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition James F. Geurts calling the installation a “game-changing capability”; that remark concerned the installation and workforce, not a game controller.

For broader reporting on game-style controls, see WBUR and WIRED; those accounts do not establish the interface for ODIN or HELIOS.
