Verdict: EA Sports FC 27 is a worthwhile update if you want more hands-on control of matches or expect to spend time in Career, Clubs and the new social mode, The Grounds. It is not a wholesale reinvention: launch reviewers found meaningful changes alongside familiar modes and rough edges. One practical caveat comes first: The Grounds is not available on PS4 or Xbox One.
FC 27 launched worldwide on September 25, 2026. This assessment draws on EA’s feature descriptions and launch reviews published between September 18 and 25; post-launch updates may change gameplay, so check the current version when weighing those observations.

What changed in FC 27?
The most conspicuous addition is The Grounds, which EA describes as a social football playground built around small-sided matches, Kickabouts, mentors and Clubs. EA also highlights dynamic corners, enhanced attacking movement and more manual defending. In Career, the publisher describes a rebuilt transfer market with player values and active club bidding; Ultimate Team adds a Gallery where themed sets contribute to progression and rewards.
Those are EA’s feature descriptions, not proof that each change transforms play. Launch reviewers generally saw an evolution rather than a reset, and differed on how successful the new mode and gameplay adjustments feel.

EA reports that FC 27 includes more than 21,000 players, 800 clubs and national teams, 140 stadiums and 35-plus leagues, supported by over 300 global football partners. How does it feel to play?
More responsibility on the player
Game Informer’s Matthew Kato, reviewing the PS5 version on September 25, found defending more dependent on direct player control: manual defending is rewarded, while through balls demand better aim. He also flagged unwanted player switching and inconsistent CPU teammates. The result may suit players who enjoy shaping each phase themselves, but it can frustrate anyone expecting the game to reliably make the right defensive adjustment for them. Promising adjustments, not a settled consensus
Jake Brigstock’s September 18 review for The Independent was based on an early-access PS5 Pro build and about ten hours of play. He found the core football solid and saw promise in gameplay tweaks and Career’s transfer changes, while noting unintended effects from some changes and familiarity across modes including Ultimate Team. He could not test every Grounds activity in that build, so his comments are not a complete assessment of the mode at launch. Read The Independent review.

Are Career, Ultimate Team and The Grounds worth your time?

The mode question matters more than the feature list. If your main draw is The Grounds, verify platform support before buying. If you mostly play Career or FUT, the changes are more incremental, so whether they justify an upgrade depends on how much you value refreshed systems over a familiar annual format.
Which platforms include The Grounds?
EA identifies PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 as platforms that support The Grounds and Clubs. The mode is not available on PS4 or Xbox One. FC 27 is listed for those older consoles, but feature availability varies by platform; owning the game on PS4 or Xbox One does not provide access to The Grounds. Consult EA’s editions and platform information before choosing a version.

Should you buy FC 27 or try Lite first?
EA describes FC 27 Lite as a free-to-download preview available from launch. It includes selected content such as Kick-Off and offers an option to upgrade; it is not the full game. EA lists Lite for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, EA App, Steam and Epic Games Store. Check the live EA page for current availability and included content, which can change.

For the full game, EA says Standard Edition includes the game and all core modes. Ultimate adds benefits, but its early-bird pre-order period ended August 31, 2026; that expired offer should not be treated as currently available. EA’s listed platforms include EA App, PS5 and PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Steam and Epic Games Store. Some feature availability varies by platform.
- Try Lite first if you want a low-commitment way to sample the available preview content.
- Choose Standard if you have decided you want the full game and its core modes.
- Check the platform carefully if The Grounds is the main reason you are buying; it requires a supported platform and is absent on PS4 and Xbox One.
Final verdict
FC 27 makes a clearer case for itself through more demanding match control, Career adjustments and a new social destination than through a dramatic overhaul. The launch reviews support calling it a modest, sometimes promising step forward, not a reinvention. Buy it for the modes and platform you will actually use; if you are unsure, the Lite preview offers a sensible first look.
