No. The Tapo D260 can record locally to a microSD card without Tapo Care. TP-Link’s UK product page says cloud storage through Tapo Care is optional, not required. A subscription is for cloud storage and associated services, not a prerequisite for local recording.
How can the Tapo D260 store recordings?
TP-Link’s D260 V1 datasheet, hosted on its UK site, lists three storage options: a separately purchased microSD card, Tapo Care cloud storage, and compatible Tapo Hub storage. Check the datasheet for your exact regional and hardware version; the stated capacity and compatibility may not apply to every version.

Local recording with microSD
The D260 V1 datasheet specifies a microSD slot supporting cards up to 512 GB. The card is sold separately, and local recording does not require Tapo Care. For card selection, TP-Link recommends at least Class 10/U1/V10 speed and a High, Max, or Pro Endurance card for security recording. Its guidance warns that supported capacities and card compatibility can vary by model and hardware version, so verify your exact D260 version before buying.

Cloud storage with Tapo Care
The D260 datasheet labels Tapo Care cloud storage as subscription-based. TP-Link describes the service as saving event clips to the cloud, which can be useful if the doorbell is damaged, stolen, or offline. The device’s datasheet separately lists detection and local recording capabilities, so do not assume a cloud plan is required for every doorbell feature.
Storage through a Tapo Hub
The datasheet also lists Hub storage as compatible, with the Hub sold separately. TP-Link’s cited documentation does not establish which Hub models are currently supported in every region or with every D260 firmware version. Confirm the supported Hub model in your region before relying on it as an alternative.

How should you choose between local and cloud storage?
| Consideration | microSD recording | Tapo Care cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Buy a compatible card separately; no cloud subscription is needed for local recording. | Recurring subscription; the price depends on region, promotions, and where you subscribe. |
| Where clips are stored | On the card in the doorbell. | In TP-Link’s cloud service. |
| Access and resilience | Recordings are local to the device. Cloud storage may help preserve access to event clips if the doorbell is damaged, stolen, or offline. | Cloud event clips are accessible through the service, subject to the plan’s retention and terms. |
| Retention | The cited D260 datasheet does not specify a fixed retention period; it depends on card capacity and recording use. | The US FAQ lists up to 30 days for Cloud and up to 180 days for the Advanced tiers. |
| Extra features | Local recording is listed separately from Tapo Care cloud services. | Depending on tier and availability, adds snapshot notifications, organization/filtering, and AI features. |
Choose local recording if your priority is avoiding a recurring cloud plan and keeping recordings on a card. Consider cloud if off-device storage, its stated retention period, or plan-specific features matter to you. A Hub may also be an option, but verify model and firmware support for your region.
How much does Tapo Care cost?
TP-Link does not publish one fixed US price in its pricing FAQ. It says prices vary by region and promotions, and the amount can differ between the Tapo web portal and app. Sign in to both and compare the plan and billing cycle shown for your account before subscribing; do not treat an old or third-party price as the current cost for your D260.

What happens to the free trial or cloud clips if you cancel?
According to TP-Link’s US Tapo Care FAQ, updated June 11, 2026, its 30-day free trial automatically becomes paid unless canceled before the trial ends. After a plan expires or is canceled, the FAQ describes a 14-day grace period in which you can view or download cloud videos, with downloads limited to 200 clips. After that window, cloud videos and related data are permanently deleted. Check the current in-app terms before starting a trial or canceling, as service terms can change.
