Does the PS4 Support 4K, HDR, and 120Hz?

All PS4 consoles support HDR, but 4K output is exclusive to PS4 Pro. Sony documents PS4 Pro 4K at up to 60fps—not 120Hz.

It depends on the PS4 model: every PS4 supports HDR, but only PS4 Pro supports 4K output. Sony documents PS4 Pro’s 4K output at up to 60 frames per second with a compatible 4K/60Hz display; its cited specifications do not document 120Hz output. A 120Hz TV can display a signal from a PS4, but it cannot make the console output at 120Hz.

PS4 and PS4 Pro: support at a glance

Console 4K output HDR 120Hz output
Standard PS4 No. Sony says 4K output is available only on PS4 Pro. Yes, with an HDR-compatible display and compatible game or streaming content. Sony’s cited documentation does not list a 120Hz output mode.
PS4 Pro Yes. It supports 2160p output when the display and HDMI signal chain support it. Yes, with an HDR-compatible display and compatible content. No 120Hz mode is documented. Sony specifies 4K output at up to 60 frames per second and recommends a 4K/60Hz display.

Sony’s PS4 Pro setup guide puts the distinction plainly: all PS4 consoles have HDR capability, but 4K is available only with PS4 Pro.

What “4K” means on PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro can send a 2160p (4K) video output to a compatible TV. That does not mean every game renders all of its graphics natively at 4K. Games and services differ, and some games require 4K to be enabled in their own settings. Sony’s PS4 Pro product page describes game-dependent enhancements; check the specific game’s settings and support information for its rendering options.

Sony’s 2016 PS4 Pro FAQ lists 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB output, with 2160p RGB recommended when the TV supports it. It specifies 4K output at up to 60 frames per second with a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI cable.

Does PS4 support HDR?

Yes. Sony says HDR capability is available on all PS4 models, including the standard PS4. HDR still depends on the whole setup: the TV and selected HDMI input must support HDR, and the game or streaming program must provide HDR content. Turning on the console’s HDR setting cannot add HDR to an SDR television. Sony notes that HDR availability varies by game and streaming content in its PS4 support information.

Can a PS4 run at 120Hz?

Sony’s cited PS4 specifications do not document a 120Hz output mode. For PS4 Pro, Sony documents 4K output up to 60 frames per second and recommends a 4K/60Hz display for that mode. A TV with a 120Hz panel can accept the console’s supported signal, but the panel’s refresh-rate capability does not change the console’s output.

Frame rate and refresh rate are related but not interchangeable: a game’s frame rate describes how many frames it produces, while a display’s refresh rate describes how often it refreshes. Sony’s references to higher frame rates in selected PS4 Pro games are game-dependent enhancements, not evidence of 120Hz video output.

Set up 4K on PS4 Pro

  1. Check the display path. Enable 4K on the TV and any receiver or other intermediate device. Connect the console to the TV’s 4K-capable HDMI input.
  2. Check the cable. Sony recommends Premium HDMI cabling for this setup. The PS4 Pro package included an HDMI cable, so check whether the cable you already have is suitable before buying another.
  3. Choose the output setting. On the console, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings. Select 2160p – YUV420 or 2160p – RGB if supported; Automatic selects the highest mode the display and content support.
  4. Verify the result. If the TV, input, receiver, or cable does not support the required mode, the console may use a lower resolution. Sony warns that a display without 4K/60Hz support may result in a 2K/60Hz picture.

Set up HDR on a PS4

  1. Connect the console to an HDMI input on the TV that supports HDR, and enable HDR for that input in the TV’s menus.
  2. Sony recommends connecting the console directly to the TV with a Premium HDMI cable for HDR setup.
  3. On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings, then set HDR and Deep Colour Output to Automatic.
  4. For streaming, choose a program that is itself available in HDR; the console setting alone does not make non-HDR content HDR.
