Can you tap or swipe the MacBook Pro display?
No. A May 12, 2025 Macworld report says that no Macs, including MacBook Pro, have touchscreens. Apple’s model-specific specifications are the place to confirm the display details for a particular MacBook Pro, since product specifications can change.

On the MacBook Pro, use the keyboard and trackpad to control macOS. Apple’s trackpad guide describes clicking and force clicking, two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, two-finger navigation, and three- or four-finger app switching. These can make common actions feel familiar to someone used to touch gestures, but they happen on the trackpad—not on the display.
What does running iPhone or iPad apps on a Mac mean for touch?
Apple silicon Macs can run many iPhone and iPad apps available in the Mac App Store. Listings identify these apps with “Designed for iPhone” or “Designed for iPad” badges. That compatibility means the app may run on a Mac; it does not turn the MacBook Pro display into a touchscreen.

- Availability varies: Developers can choose not to offer an iPhone or iPad app on Mac. Check the Mac App Store listing for the specific app.
- Some features may differ: Functions that rely on particular iPhone or iPad hardware, or on complex Multi-Touch input, may not work as they do on those devices.
- Read the verification badge carefully: “Not verified for macOS” means full Mac compatibility has not been verified. The badge alone does not mean the app cannot run.
Can an iPad act as a touchscreen for Mac content?
Sidecar lets an iPad serve as a separate display for a Mac. Macworld describes touching Mac content shown on the iPad through Sidecar. In this setup, touch input happens on the iPad’s screen; the MacBook Pro panel remains non-touch.
Do not assume a particular Mac, iPad, operating-system version, or app combination will work without checking Apple’s current Sidecar requirements. The available compatibility information does not establish a current model-by-model matrix.

Is the Touch Bar a touchscreen?
No. On supported older MacBook Pro models, the Touch Bar is a narrow control strip above the keyboard. It is not the main display, and it is not present on every MacBook Pro model. Do not confuse it with a touchscreen laptop display.

Apple executives have historically discussed the ergonomics and consistency of using a Mac. Macworld attributes a 2016 remark to Phil Schiller, then Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing: “We think of the whole platform… If we were to do Multi-Touch on the screen of the notebook, that wouldn’t be enough – then the desktop wouldn’t work that way.”

Macworld also attributes a 2018 remark to Craig Federighi, then Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering: “We really feel that the ergonomics of using a Mac are that your hands are rested on a surface, and that lifting your arm up to poke a screen is a pretty fatiguing thing to do…” These are historical comments, not a current product specification or a statement of Apple’s present roadmap.
