Sometimes. The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s extra cost is easiest to justify if you will use its built-in Privacy Display, S Pen, longer optical zoom, or larger QHD+ screen. If you mainly want a current Galaxy flagship, the S26 or S26+ may cover your needs without those Ultra-specific extras. Compare current prices for the same storage and purchase terms: U.S. launch prices announced in February 2026 are no longer a reliable guide to what you will pay.
What does the price premium buy?
The clearest differences are in the display, cameras, privacy feature, stylus support, and charging specifications. Samsung’s published specifications show the S26 and S26+ share the same listed core rear-camera setup; the Ultra adds a dedicated 5x telephoto camera and higher-resolution main and ultrawide cameras.

These are Samsung-published specifications, not independent measurements of photo quality, battery life, charging time, or screen readability. Samsung says the Ultra’s wider camera apertures help with low-light photography, but the cited sources do not establish how its photos compare in real-world testing. When is the S26 Ultra worth paying more for?
You often need privacy in public
The Ultra’s Privacy Display is built into the phone and, when activated, limits what people beside you can see. Samsung says it preserves full viewing quality from all directions when switched off. That makes it a situational advantage for viewing sensitive content in public, rather than a feature every buyer will benefit from. Samsung contrasts it with a conventional stick-on privacy film in its Galaxy S26 announcement.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
You will use the S Pen
The included S Pen gives the Ultra a practical edge for handwriting, marking up documents, and precision input. If you rarely use a stylus, its presence is not a strong reason to pay extra.
You regularly want longer optical zoom
The Ultra’s listed 5x telephoto camera adds a longer optical-zoom option than the 3x telephoto listed for the S26 and S26+. Its 200MP main and 50MP ultrawide cameras also differ on paper from the other models’ 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide cameras. Those specifications offer more camera hardware and flexibility; they do not guarantee better results in every scene.

You prefer the largest, highest-resolution screen
The Ultra combines a 6.9-inch QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It suits someone who values a large screen for reading, video, games, or work. The S26+ is a middle ground: it also has a QHD+ 120Hz display, but at 6.7 inches, and it lacks the Ultra’s listed Privacy Display and S Pen support.

You value the higher charging rating
Samsung lists the Ultra for wired charging up to 60W, versus up to 45W for the S26+ and 25W for the S26. These peak ratings show a specification difference, not a guaranteed charging time; actual results are not established by the cited sources.

When is the S26 or S26+ the better fit?
Choose the S26 if you want the smaller option
The S26 has a 6.3-inch FHD+ 120Hz display and the same listed core rear-camera configuration as the S26+. It is the straightforward choice if you do not need a larger, sharper screen, a stylus, the Ultra’s Privacy Display, or its additional zoom hardware.
Consider the S26+ for a larger QHD+ screen
The S26+ pairs a 6.7-inch QHD+ 120Hz display with a listed 4,900mAh battery and up to 45W wired charging. It provides a larger, higher-resolution display than the S26 without moving to the Ultra’s price tier and distinctive hardware.

Do not pay extra for shared software alone
Samsung describes Galaxy AI features across the S26 series, including Now Nudge, Now Brief, Circle to Search, upgraded Bixby, and a choice of agents including Gemini and Perplexity. It also describes Photo Assist, Creative Studio, Document Scan, security and privacy changes, and seven years of security updates. These are part of the series’ overall pitch, not evidence that the Ultra alone gets the AI features.
How should you compare prices?
Prices below are U.S. figures at two different dates, not a live price list. Samsung’s February 25, 2026 launch announcement gave starting prices; Tom’s Guide reported on October 1, 2026 that several U.S. prices had increased. | Model and storage | U.S. launch price announced Feb. 25, 2026 | Price reported Oct. 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| S26, starting price | $899.99 | $999 |

| S26+, starting price | $1,099.99 | $1,199 |

Samsung said the Ultra would be available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations and that general availability began March 11, 2026. The later figures are a dated report, not a live feed; see Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement and Tom’s Guide’s October 1 price report.
For a fair comparison, match storage capacity, unlocked or carrier status, trade-in eligibility, and whether the amount is a list price or temporary promotion. Prices and model availability vary by region, so a U.S. figure should not be applied to another market.
What about Samsung’s performance claims?
Samsung says the S26 Ultra’s customized chipset improves CPU performance by up to 19%, NPU performance by 39%, and GPU performance by 24% compared with the prior-generation Ultra baseline described in its announcement. These are Samsung’s claims, not independent test results, and do not by themselves show how the models perform in everyday use. Samsung also notes regional processor differences in its Ireland comparison.
