A washer’s steam feature alone does not show that it sanitizes laundry or reduces allergens. Those claims apply to specific documented cycles, and allergen reduction is different from bacteria-focused sanitization. Check the exact washer manual and garment care label before choosing a cycle.
What a steam setting does—and does not—tell you
“Steam” can describe a feature that treats laundry before the main wash, not a verified result for every stain, allergen, or microorganism. LG says its Steam function uses steam as a pretreatment to help loosen stubborn stains; the company also notes that the feature heats a small amount of water before the wash and adds time to the cycle. That description is not, by itself, a claim that all steam-treated laundry is sanitized or allergen-reduced. See LG’s steam-use guidance.

For a performance claim, look for the exact named cycle and its documentation. A general steam option, a dedicated allergen cycle, and a sanitize cycle are not interchangeable.

LG Allergiene cycle
LG USA Support says its Allergiene™ cycle uses intense steam heat to remove over 95% of common household allergens, including dust mites and pet dander. LG recommends the cycle for items such as pillow covers and bed sheets. This is a claim about the named cycle, not every LG washer with steam or every steam washer. See LG USA’s Allergiene cycle guidance.

LG’s separate US AAFA page says Allergiene-cycle washers remove common household allergens in fabrics by more than 90%, based on AAFA certification. The stated percentage and basis differ from the support-page wording, so do not treat the two figures as a universal result for steam washing. Check which models and certifications are current in your market on LG’s allergy-friendly products page.
Whirlpool Allergen cycle
A Whirlpool owner manual for specified models describes an Allergen cycle that uses more water to flush out allergens such as dust mites and pet dander. It says the cycle was designed to meet NSF Protocol P351 and that certification verified at least 95.0% reduction of tested allergens, as well as maintenance of water temperature necessary to kill dust mites. That evidence applies to the models and cycle covered by that manual—not to Whirlpool washers generally. Consult the Whirlpool owner manual for the relevant models.

Percentages are meaningful only alongside the target and test basis. Before comparing cycles, check which allergen was tested, the stated protocol or certification, and whether the result applies to the exact model you are considering.
Sanitize cycles make a different kind of claim
The Whirlpool manual describes a separate Sanitize cycle for clothing, bedding, and towels. For the specified models, it says the cycle eliminates 99.99% of the most common bacteria found in those items and names K. pneumonia, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus as tested bacteria. This bacteria-focused claim does not establish that the cycle reduces dust mites, pet dander, or another allergen.

- Compact & Space-Saving Design – 24-inch wide, 2.4 cu. ft. capacity fits small laundry spaces, apartments, and stackable setups.
- Advanced AI Fabric Sensor – Automatically detects fabric type and load size to optimize wash cycles for superior care.
- Steam Cleaning Technology – Removes stubborn stains and allergens while keeping clothes fresh and hygienic.
- Smart Pairing Compatible – Connects with compatible LG dryers for automatic cycle syncing and enhanced laundry efficiency.

Whirlpool’s general guidance says sanitize cycles use extra-hot washing or drying to help fight particular common household bacteria. It advises following garment-care directions when using laundry sanitizer or bleach. Those are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal medical or regulatory rule. See Whirlpool’s laundry-sanitizing guidance.
How to choose a cycle safely
- Find the exact model’s manual. Identify the specific cycle—such as Allergiene, Allergen, or Sanitize—and read what the manufacturer says it is intended to do. Do not infer a tested result from a generic Steam button.
- Match the claim to your goal. For allergen reduction, look for a named allergen cycle and stated tested targets. For a bacteria-focused claim, look for the sanitize cycle’s documented targets. Do not use one type of claim as proof of the other.
- Check the garment label and washer instructions. LG warns against steam on wool, silk, leather, and easily discolored fabrics. Follow the care label and the instructions for your particular washer before using high heat or steam.
- Verify the model and market. Cycle names, test claims, and certifications can vary by model and market. Confirm the documentation for the precise washer you own or plan to buy.
What the available claims do not establish
The cited manufacturer documents support claims for particular cycles and tested targets; they do not establish that ordinary steam-only options across brands reduce allergens or sanitize clothing. Nor do these claims mean that laundry becomes allergen-free, prevent allergy symptoms, or sterilize every garment. Treat a percentage as a bounded result for the named cycle and evidence—not a guarantee about every load.
